CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE #030804 - PART ONE - Monday, August 25, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here
first!
This is a MONDAY Issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes the regular "Major Rooms"
and "Other Rooms" listings for around the world, and will also give
information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
The MID-WEEK issue, usually sent on Thursdays, will concentrate more
on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen.
What a difference a few days make! The weather this weekend was astoundingly
beautiful - low 80s, big puffy clouds, lots of sunshine, cooling breezes
- and except for a shopping venture yesterday, I stayed here by the
computer working on the mailing list and getting out those membership
cards. And the computer virus problem, mentioned in the last issue,
seems to have abated considerably. True, I am still getting about
25 of those pesky e-mails an hour, that's a lot less than the 100
or so I was getting before. Ah, such bliss!
ONLY ABOUT 75 MEMBERSHIP CARDS
LEFT TO SEND!
If I had known how much work was involved, I maybe would have had second
thoughts about membership cards - I normally do not send letters by
regular mail, so I had forgotten the elements that go into mailing nearly
250 letters. First, my printer ran out of ink after the first 100 letters,
and I had to wait a few days for the new cartridges to be delivered.
Meantime, I couldn't even print the labels and address envelopes.
So I set about updating my database, only to find out that the person
I had hired last year to do this had done a rather sloppy job - e-mail
addresses weren't entered on many of them, as well as homepage URLs,
so I had to do a lot of research while I was working. Fortunately
I have my handy iBook laptop, so I could enter data on one machine
while checking data on the other. To keep things rolling, I divided
the task into about 50 names at a time. The first 100 cards went out
last week - I put another 50 letters in the mail this morning (there
is a pickup at 9:00 am on the corner). But then I ran out of envelopes
and postage in the meter, so yesterday I went to OfficeMax for envelopes,
and this morning I used my credit card to purchase more postage for
my meter (the company was closed on Sunday). As soon as this issue
goes out, I am back to my mailing project, with about 75 more to go.
It is important that I get this all done because some folks have begun
offering show discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members - they realized
that they get a free listing in my newsletter and on my website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MembersOnly.shtml)
if they make this offer. To be eligible you must send me your flier
and/or other promotional material showing the discount offer. I will
use that information for the website and newsletter listing. Please
confirm that you have sent me the material with an e-mail reminder
so I can watch for it. Be sure you check with the venue where your
show is being performed, to make sure that these discounts are permitted.
By the way, if you place a banner ad on the website, and also offer
a show discount to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members, you can take a
10% PayPal payment discount instead of the current 5% on your banner
ad payment, if the total cost of your ad is over $100. This is in
addition to any rebate or discount you might be entitled to.

HAVEN'T JOINED YET?
If you find these messages and the information and news on the website
of value, then I hope you will consider becoming a member of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, since I depend on your membership donations and banner
ads to make this service possible. Our new membership year began on
July 6th for the 2003-2004 year. Nearly 250 folks have already signed
up for 2003-2004. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL), or get
special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD) donation
(20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member at
higher levels.
For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
- if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable
simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036.
FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AFFORD TO JOIN THIS YEAR
Can't afford the membership fee? Someone has come forward with a small
donation to be used to give a SILVER membership to at least 5 subscribers,
so if you are someone experiencing hard times right now, drop me a
note. Your "free" SILVER membership will allow you to deduct $20 from
your first banner ad in a membership year, allow you to have your
CD listed in the CD SALE section, get discounts on cabaret shows and
other events where offered, and get a listing on the appropriate SILVER
MEMBER page. And all will be in confidence - the person making the
donation does not even wish to know your name. And if, later this
membership year, you can afford the membership, you can make the donation
to make it possible for us to offer someone else a free membership.
DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website selling our
fast for September & October - especially around the time of the October
Cabaret Convention here in NYC. I have just 5 spaces left for several
of those weeks. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week,
so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon
as possible. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly
all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000
times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2
weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with
a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member
rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned
every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter
(current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single
word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

LSLF CABARET HALL DATE ANNOUNCED
"Reach for Tomorrow!" - a tomorrow when we will have conquered the
dreaded disease of leukemia. And "Reach for Tomorrow" is the theme
of this year's gala benefit concert for the LAURI STRAUSS LEUKEMIA
FOUNDATION (http://www.lslf.org/)
at CARNEGIE HALL (154 West 57th Street, NYC - CarnegieCharge 1-212-247-7800)
to be held on November 3rd. The foundation is now in its 14th year
of funding medical research into leukemia and allied cancers. A roster
of great volunteer stars from musical theater and the concert stage,
television, comedy and jazz will appear in the gala. Heading the parade
will be Skitch Henderson, conducting The New York Pops and sharing
host privileges with Midge Woolsey, Channel 13/WQXR personality. There

COMING NEXT ISSUE
We will be sending out the MID-WEEK issue in a few days which will
include reports/reviews on shows seen, as well as more news items,
more cabaret listings and a rundown of new BREAKING NEWS items added
to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
since the last mid-week issue. This week I will be reviewing shows
seen a second time, including shows by Baby Jane Dexter, Natalie Douglas,
Susan Neuffer & Ronit Ray.
Now I must send this issue off. This issue was rather hastily prepared
because the apartment downstairs from me is undergoing a remodeling
in the kitchen - the man of the house is a chef, and they have been
planning this for a year. But to do this they had to shut off the
electricity for about two hours today - really cutting back on my
work time. Unfortunately, they only gave me about 10 minutes notice,
so I could not copy the newsletter to my portable iBook and continue
my work.
I have to head into town to pick up my mail now. I have no cabaret
plans for tonight - I sort of made a pledge to forgo any shows until
all the membership cards are out. However, it is always good to remind
one's self that it is still possible to overcome your own will power,
and I just might cheat and go once more to see Tom Angola's "Divas
I Have Done" show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC -
1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 9:30 pm. Now that show is what I call fun!
One final note: With Monday, September 1st being a holiday here in
the US (Labor Day), the issue that usually goes out on Monday will
be sent out on Tuesday, the 2nd of September, instead. I want to make
one last attempt to visit Coney Island before the season ends, and
it the weather is as nice as today, there is where I will be.
Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations
these past weeks. We are now more than halfway towards out goal of
400 members for 2003-2004 - of course it would be great if we could
reach an even higher number, but we have many more months to go before
the next membership year.
And that is just about the way it was.
