Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
Now that the MAC Awards
have come - and gone with a bang - its time to get back to reality.
This year's extravaganza will be one that will be hard to top in future
years, to be sure. I have sent out as complete a report as could be
written of the event to all members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and
that report has been posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
as of early this morning. I have also received some fantastic photos
of the event from Henri Van Ryn, and I will be posting them on the
website, either later today or some time tomorrow.
Especially important was
the fact that the Awards Show exploded the myth that cabaret only
means a lady in an elegant gown, standing by a microphone, next to
a grand piano. Mary Cleere Haran took that role on Monday, and it
was a delightful presentation (only slightly marred by her usual over-long
patter). The show proved that Feinstein's, the Algonquin and Cafe
Carlyle presentations only represent a part of cabaret. Cabaret is
alive, fun and exciting. The performers who have come into cabaret
in the past 5 or 7 years or so have invigorated the art form, and
in some ways have returned cabaret to its roots - irreverent at times,
risque at times, even bawdy at times - yet always fresh and entertaining.
Welcome to 21st Century, cabaret! This is the cabaret foreseen and
foretold by folks like my favorite cabaret icon of yore, Bruce Hopkins
- I am sure that if he was watching from somewhere, he was cheering
the show on.
A few paragraphs from
my MAC AWARDS report deserve repetition here:
Judy Barnett was especially
eloquent in berating the fact that MAC was presenting just one award
this year in the jazz category (which she presented to Natalie Douglas)
when in years past there have been as many as 5 awards in this area,
including Male & Female, Major & Minor Vocalist awards and a Jazz
Instrumentalist Award. With the fact that there are more jazz clubs
in Manhattan than Cabaret Clubs (there are 15 clubs belonging to MAC
alone that feature predominately jazz performance), this is especially
startling. At one time there was also a category for jazz recording.
The same could be said
in the comedy area, where only two awards were presented this year,
for Male & Female Stand-up - in years past there have been four presented,
in the Major & Minor divisions. (There are 5 comedy clubs on the MAC
member list alone, and several of the member cabarets feature Stand-Up
Comedy regularly as part of their schedules.)
Does this reflect a lack
of interest in comedy and jazz performers in competing in the awards
process, or does it reflect a lack of interest on the part of MAC
in cultivating and promoting these areas in their programs? I suspect
that it is a little bit of each. MAC should either shore up their
relationship with these venues or consider dropping them as participants.
Also, I was asked to pass
along one correction to the MAC AWARD show program: Maria Gentile
wrote the lyrics for the nominated song "If I Was a Boy," with Ms.
Gentile and Caren Cole writing the music.
Cute quote found on the
web: How can Peter Cincotti win a MAJOR MALE VOCALIST award when he
is still under 21 and legally a minor?
ITEM OF NOTE
MOLLY'S RESTAURANT (Route
28, West Yarmouth, MA - Resv: 508-778-1927) is hosting a Benefit for
Frank Fitzpatrick (to assist with medical bills for cancer treatments)
on Sunday, April 27th from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. If you can not attend
and would still like to contribute they will be collecting prizes
(dinners, overnights, ferry tickets, T-shirts - or whatever you can
contribute) for the Raffle. E-mail Patricia Fitzpatrick at pfitz3131@aol.com
for more information. Folks in the Cape Cod, Boston area will be especially
interested in this item.
TIME OUT NY WATCH
This week's issue of TIME
OUT NY continues their record of ignoring the MAC cabaret community:
No photos of MAC cabaret artists and just a feature about Ute Lemper
at the BOTTOM LINE (15 West 4th Street, NYC - 1-212-228-6300) - not
a MAC member club. No cabaret mentions in the Best of the Rest listings.
Will they be possibly mentioning the MAC Awards Show in the next issue?
A photo of the presentation of the TONY award to the DUPLEX staff
at the show? Don't get your hopes up too high. Hats off to the folks
in the audience at SYMPHONY SPACE on Monday night who kept their cool
and politely applauded when the editor, Joe Angio, was introduced,
along with cabaret editor H. Scott Jolley. But you might want to send
another note to TIME OUT with your thoughts. They might eventually
get the message. I again list an address for your convenience:

will be June 6th through 22nd. I will be giving you more details on
this huge event, which last year had an estimated attendance of 45,000

a landmark in Australia's arts landscape, and another example of how
South Australia is once again taking the lead in premier arts events
on a national scale. I think this festival takes the title as the
largest cabaret event in the world!

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four

CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE
From time to time we receive
information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or
other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical
location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500
subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that
might have an interest in these items.
The bulletins will be
short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already
over 100 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and were the first to learn of the closing
of JUDY'S CHELSEA and the change in the way TIME OUT NY will cover
(?) cabaret.
This special NYC e-mailing
list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list,
please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic.
You will receive confirmation. If we feel it is successful, we will
extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST,
etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those
on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

an issue later in the week with reports (not quite reviews) of shows
seen, updates, and special comments, including our weekly TIME OUT
