Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
First off, I want to remind
you how important it is to me for you join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
as a member this week. We have just lost one of our major banner advertisers
on the website, and this will really put a squeeze on our budget in
the weeks ahead. For information on becoming a contributing member
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details.
Thankfully, we received
a last-minute bunch of banner ads last week to help us cope. With
the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) Award preliminary
ballots going out on February 3rd, I know a number of performers will
want to purchase banner ads for shows and CDs in February and March
that have been nominated, in order to keep their names alive and in
front of the public. With over 15,000 pages visited each day on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/),
and a limit of 20 banners a week, your banner ad will be seen as much
as 1,500 times each day (it is simple math - 2 banners appear on each
page at random). And a regular size ad running for three weeks can
cost as little as $27 per week if you are a member of MAC (or BACA,
DCCN, SSP or CABARET WEST) and a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
and pay by PayPal. For information on banner ads, just send me a note
at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
A big thank you to the
RUBY members who provide support for Special Projects & Expenses of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Enough RUBY members have joined to nearly
cover the expenses of the recent trips to San Francisco and Chicago,
and even my trip to Boston at the end of February. I am looking for
more RUBY members to cover future expenses, including attending the
First Chicago Cabaret Convention in Mid-March. For information on
becoming a "Special Ruby Member" of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, visit
http://www.svhamstra.com/MembershipRuby.shtml
or just send me a note at ruby@svhamstra.com
with the single word "RUBY" in the subject line, and I'll send all
the details. Current members can "upgrade" to this level if they wish.
The cabaret community,
especially here in NYC, continues to be all abuzz about the JEROME
RECORDS situation. John Loan/Jerome was indicted by the Grand Jury
late last week, and from the comments made by his lawyer, he appears
to admit to the theft of over $3-million from his employer, ALLIANCE
CAPITAL. It appears that there will be some type of plea arrangement
with the hope that Mr. Loan's apparent use of the funds for good deeds
and establishing the CD label will result in a merciful sentence.
The "Plea Bargaining" process is going on now. The lawyer for Mr.
Loan claims that there are no funds left of the $3-million taken over
the past 4 years (nor of the reported $225,000.00 per year Mr. Loan
was paid in salary by ALLIANCE).
Meantime, performers who
had ongoing projects with JEROME RECORDS are in a state of limbo regarding
their completed or in-progress CDs. The January 25-31 Issue of BACK
STAGE, out today, has an article on the situation by Leonard Jacobs.
We also hear that David Finkle, who writes for both BACK STAGE and
the VILLAGE VOICE has been working on an article about Mr. Loan/Jerome.
By the way, we have a
correction to an item in the last issue about the Jerome article in
CABARET SCENES Magazine that we heard was to be the cover story of
their newest issue. Apparently we were misinformed by three sources,
and while there was an article in the works by Mr. Peter Leavy, it
was for a future issue, not the current one. There was no need to
"stop the presses."
There has been some lively
discussion on this whole matter on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Message
Board on the website as well. You are invited to add your comments,
as long as you remember that when expressing an opinion, we ask that
you use your real name - we currently verify postings and will remove
items that are anonymous. After all, if you are unwilling to sign
your name to it, you have no business posting it.
Remember David Campbell?
He arrived here a few years back from Australia, made a big splash
on the Cabaret scene, then moved to Off-Broadway, and suddenly decided
to return to Australia, and announced his intention to move out of
cabaret to become a pop/rock performer. From January through November
2001, David starred in the new Australian musical, "Shout! ... The
Story of the Wild One." The show is based on the life of Australian
Rock & Roll legend, Johnny O'Keefe and had performances in Melbourne,
Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Well, he's headed back to both NYC and
Cabaret and will be appearing for 4 weeks at THE CAFE CARLYLE (35
East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600 - http://www.thecarlyle.com/cal.cfm)
from February 26th through March 23rd. Christopher Denny is musical
director. More on this to come.
Award-winning producer/director
Rick McKay (who a few years back was a highly acclaimed cabaret performer)
debuts his piece on theatre/film legend Elaine Stritch on Friday,
January 25th at 10:00 pm on "Egg: The Arts Show" on WNET-TV, channel
13 in the New York metro area and nationally on PBS affiliates (check
local listings below). The show will be rebroadcast on January 28th,
at 12:30 am.
McKay and his crew follow
Stritch through her rehearsals with director George Wolfe and writer
John Lahr at the Public Theatre, up to her opening day and into her
opening night performance. This is the first footage to be shown of
the process of rehearsal and performance of what has become the biggest
hit of the season on New York stages. "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty
"has already sold out in it's Off-Broadway run and it's Broadway run,
which opens February 21st, selling over $50,000 a day worth of tickets
- for a one-woman show! For local times and dates for the TV show,
go to http://www.pbs.org/wnet/egg/air_dates.html.
Showtune Productions will
be presenting David Hawkins' highly successful and critically acclaimed
one man show "Nom de Plume" at Sydney's "New Kabarett Venue" CABARET
JUNCTION (139 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction, Sydney, AU), on Saturday,
February 2nd, and Friday, February 15th. Shows are most Friday, Saturday
and Sunday evenings at 8:30 pm, with Avigail Herman appearing on the
8th, 9th & 16th of February with her show, "Portraits Of Life." All
enquiries call David at Showtune on (02) 9365 6374. This project is
made possible through the generous vibe and sponsorship of Hutchings
Pianos and the support of The Sydney Theatre Company.
Reminder: I have been
reorganizing all my CABARET LINKS on the website, and now we are -

You may know her from
the hit cabaret show a while back called "Daddy's Girl." Or you may
know her as the gal slumped over the piano in last year's top comedy
revue at JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/),
"That's My New York." Her name is Lorinda Lisitza and she's now appearing
at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
in a show called "Songs in the Style of Weill." She has just two shows
left, on Monday, January 28th and Tuesday, January 29th, both at 9:00
pm. Musical director is Jason Wynn, and the director is Hal Simons.
The Genesius Guild & Sandi
Durell Productions present VALENTINE - NEW SONGWRITER EVENING on Monday,
January 28th at THE PLAYERS CLUB (16 Gramercy Park South, NYC) With
Special Guest: Julie Wilson. Performers scheduled to perform include
Marnie Baumer, Marie Danvers, Rob Gallagher, Terri Klausner, Barbara
Lea, Bruce Linser, Michael Marotta, Jaymie Meyer, Diana Templeton,
Julie Reyburn and Marcus Simeone. Tickets are available through SmartTix:
212-206-1515. For More Information, please visit http://www.durellproductions.com/.
On Thursday, January 31st
another Boston contingent arrives to present BEING EARNEST - THE SONGS
OF ERNIE LiJOI, at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC
- 212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
at 9:15 pm. This show features the composer Ernie LiJoi, as well as
Ida Zecco, and one of Boston's finest performers, John O'Neil! Musical
director is Jim Rice. This show had to be cancelled a few weeks back
because of the illness of one of the performers - I have heard Mr.
LiJoi's songs performed often on my visits to Boston and Provincetown
- he has a delightful way with words, in the style of Amanda Green,
Christine Lavin, Charles Bloom, etc.
"David Lahm & Friends"
has just one more date at JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC -
212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/).
On Monday, the 28th of January, the show features the music of Burton
Lane, with Kathy Kaefer & Colm Reilly. All shows are at 8:30 pm. Ratzo
Harris is on bass at each performance. I have seen all three shows
in this series, and each one is more delightful than the last. I can't
wait for this one!
JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth
Avenue, NYC - 212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/)
will have its THIRD ANNIVERSARY GALA on Monday night, February 4th
at 8:30 pm featuring Judy Kreston & David Lahm with Leslie Anderson,
Elaine Brier, Mitch Ellis, Kimlee Hicks, Kathy Kaefer, Brad Menendez,
Colm Reilly and Jonathan Tomaselli.
Then the delightful cabaret
pair of Judy Kreston & David Lahm head for the Mid-West and will be
appearing on Valentine's Day weekend at THE INN AT UNION PIER (9708
Berrien, Union Pier, MI - 616-469-4700). On Friday night, the 15th
of February you can enjoy jazz with David Lahm at the piano and Brent
McKesson on bass. On Saturday, the 16th, Judy will join in, and the
show is called "My Funny Valentine," featuring the songs of Richard
Rogers. Union Pier is about an hour's drive from Chicago, so you windy-city
folk might want to join them as well.
I've been telling just
about everyone I see to try to get Scott Coulter's new CD, and now
you can go to his CD Release Party at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th
Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
on Monday, February 4th at 9:00 pm. His special guest will be Tony
Award winner Debbie Gravitte, who also appears on the recording. I
will admit that I rarely listen to an entire CD (even though often
I play the whole CD in the background while I work), but this recording
is one that you simply cannot ignore - it is as though Scott is singing
directly to you. I suddenly found myself understanding songs I had
heard again and again - Scott goes to the heart of the lyric, and
possesses one of the most glorious vocal instruments I have ever heard.
There will be a reception after the show.
ARCI'S PLACE (450 Park
Avenue South, NYC - 212-532-4370 - http://www.arcisplace.com/)
is presenting "Soap Week," featuring 20 soap opera stars in 6 nighs
of cabaret. Tuesday, January 29th at 8:00 pm catch the cast of ALL
MY CHILDREN, including Jennifer Bassey, Jonathan Bennett, David Canary,
Josh Duhamel, Marj Dusay, Jill Larson, Eden Riegel and Ruth Warrick.
Ian Herman is Musical Director, with direction by Fritz Brekeller.
The show benefits THE ROBIN HOOD RELIEF FUND.
Wednesday, January 30th
presents Ilene Kristen and Tonja Walker Davidson from ONE LIFE TO
LIVE, with Linda Thorson, from the same show, on Friday, February
1st at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Saturday, February 2nd, at 8:30 & 11:00 pm
presents Barbara Luna (also from ONE LIFE TO LIVE). Sunday, February
3rd brings "An Evening with Eileen Fulton" (AS THE WORLD TURNS) at
8:00 pm and on Monday, February 4th, the cast of GUIDING LIGHT, benefitting
the Uniformed Firefighters Association and Widows and Children's Fund,
featuring Thom Christopher as host and Saundra Santiago, Paul Anthony
Stewart, Ron Raines and Kim Zimmer. The productions are in conjunction
with Pat Sellers of SOAP OPERA WEEKLY.
Well, its Thursday, and
I have to get going - with a lot more to write about. But Seth Rudetsky's
"Broadway Chatterbox" celebrity interview is celebrating its second
anniversary today with special guest Matthew Broderick. The show has
been sold out for weeks and I want to be plenty early in order to
get a good seat. These weekly shows are some of the best instructional
entertainment in town - and all the proceeds go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY
FIGHTS AIDS. I try to get there every week - and I hope to see more
of you there as well. If you want to find out the behind-the-scenes
stories of Broadway, this is the show to get to.
Be sure to check the website
for other interesting items and articles. I have four more almost
ready to add - just need to finish some coding - including my top
cabaret picks of 2001. I also will be completing the article on the
Cabaret Conference in San Francisco (have to match some names to photos
and do a final layout), and hopefully will be making my Cabaret Venue
Awards as well.
Meantime, now more than
ever, I need your membership donations and Banner Ads. Only through
your support can I continue to keep you up to date on this wide world
of Cabaret. Much of what you read here and on the website you will
not find anywhere else. Keep sending me your news, your press releases,
your comments and suggestions. I am working for you and all the supporters
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!
And that is just about
the way it was.
