Best wishes to all of you for a Happy & Prosperous New Year! I was hoping to send off one more issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE before the end of the year, but had about 40% competed when I was called away on a personal matter and decided to trash the whole issue and start over in 2002.

On Sunday night, December 30th, at 6:00 pm, I saw my last cabaret show for 2001 - and a glorious show it was! Jeanne Resua, who made her cabaret debut in 2001 - first performing at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) and then moving over to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) performed another fantastic show - classic cabaret style. For those of you who missed this show, all I can say is that you missed out on seeing a cabaret performance that was very nearly perfection. All who had a part in the development and production of this show can be rightfully proud, especially Ron Cohn, Director, and David Brunetti, Musical Director. There have been hints that the show may return in the late winter. I would love to see it again.

I am in the midst of making my Cabaret Picks for 2001 - the list is pretty long right now and I want to whittle it down a bit. The chore is difficult because I saw some fantastic performances last year, and choosing just 15 to 20 shows in virtually impossible.

Now, more than ever, I need you to consider joining CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as a supporting member. If you have not yet sent in your membership donation, please consider doing it this week. The number of banner ads on the website has dropped nearly 40% from the October & November levels - advertising in all media is down as a result of the economic downturn, but CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE does not have the financial reserves of the large media companies to assist in the lean times. For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details.

A big thanks to those who joined these past few days, or upgraded their memberships to a higher level. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will celebrate its 11th Anniversary in July - and I will celebrate my first year of doing this project full time, independently, at the same time. The website and these regular e-mail newsletters are entirely supported by banner advertising and membership donations. Without your support, it would be impossible to carry on this work.

For information on becoming a "Special Ruby Member" of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just send me a note at ruby@svhamstra.com with the single word "ruby" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. Current CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members can "upgrade" to this level if they wish. RUBY MEMBERS are special contributors who support special project expenses, like our recent trips to San Francisco to cover the Cabaret Conference, and the more recent Chicago trip. We still owe quite a bit on our credit card for those jaunts, and now we are hoping to raise enough to attend the Chicago Cabaret Convention in mid-March. Any surplus funds will go towards the purchase of a laptop computer so we can send e-mail reports while we are travelling.

The NY Sheet Music Society will be meeting this Saturday, January 5th. William Zinsser, who wrote a new book on "The American Popular Song" is the guest. The book was given a rave review by the NY Times. John Meyer is entertaining along with Stephanie Pope and other guests. Copies of the book will be available at a tremendous discount and will be personally autographed by the author. Meetings are held at the Women's Republican Club (3 West 51st Street, NYC). AT 12:30 pm there is a "flea market" where sheet music is sold, and at 2:00 pm the program begins. Members can attend for free - for guests there is a $10 charge. The club meets 9 times a year, and membership is just $40.00.

Michael Feinstein just chose his 10 favorite cabaret rooms for 2001 on behalf of PEOPLE MAGAZINE. You can see his choices on their website at http://www.usatoday.com/life/travel/leisure/2001/2001-12-28-great-cabaret.htm - interestingly, he did not pick his namesake club here in NYC as one of them!

I will be naming my favorite cabaret venues on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) shortly - I don't know if I will have 10 choices, and there have been a few changes since my list of last year. Stay tuned.

VORTEX JAZZ BAR (139-141 Stoke Newington Church Street, LONDON N16 - Reservations +44 (0)20 7254 6516) presents "Pirate Jenny" on Monday, January 7th, with a show called "Strong Words Sturdily Spoken." The show features two of Britain's greatest maverick songwriters, both of whom have established themselves on the folk/acoustic circuit but whose gift for melody, brilliantly witty and insightful words and incisive social criticism sets them among the ranks of the great chansonniers. As it happens, both are also friends who have often worked together, but tonight they're delivering two superb sets in their own right. Leon Rosselson is a true veteran of satirical song: though best known on the folk scene, his pithy, acerbic, unashamedly oppositional and often bitterly hilarious songs boast influences from traditions like music hall and French realist songwriting. Rob Johnson's pithy, literate and moving songs, place him in a category far removed from the comfortable cliche of the acoustic singer-songwriter. Pirate Jenny's host and resident performer Des De Moorewill also be offering his own mini-cabaret set, bringing his unique and dramatic performance to moving and witty originals including material from forthcoming album Testing Times as well as drawing on a selection of French, German and Dutch material in original translations. Showtimes are 8:00 and 11:15 pm.

Liz Callaway brings her 60s tribute to the EMELIN THEATRE (153 Library Lane, Mamaroneck, NY - 914-698-3045) on Saturday, January 12th at 8:00 pm (one show only). This two act evening will feature songs from her recent smash 60s CD as well as Liz' favorites.

5 places only remain in Tovah Feldshuh's intensive workshop "An Actor's Approach to a Song." The master class is January 18th through 20th. It is the last chance to study with her before she leaves on concert tour! For details call 212 932 2416 or Visit her website at: http://www.tovahfeldshuh.com/.

Jazz vocalist and JEROME RECORDS (http://www.jeromerecords.com/) recording artist Laurie Krause makes her SOUL CAFE (444 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-244-7685) debut on Thursday, January 10th, with sets at 9:00 & 11:00 pm. She is joined by the Daryl Kojak Quartet.

Well, this is a short issue, but jam-packed with information. And it is just a sample of all the great live entertainment events around the world that you can be a part of. Additional items appear on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) under "Breaking News" and we urge you to check the website regularly as new items are added almost daily.

I mentioned earlier that the number of banner ads is down for January - but this is actually a stroke of luck for this who did place ads - since there are fewer ads, each ad is shown more times (they appear at random on nearly all 900+ pages of the website). For information on banner ads, just send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the word "Banner" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
