Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
I just discovered an unknown
benefit to my habit of heading home from my office each day around
4:00 pm to get in a short nap before hitting the "cabaret circuit"
each night. I catch the bus back to the west side every day on the
corner of 34th Street & Sixth Avenue - and on Thursday afternoon,
around 5:00 pm, a delivery van went out of control, jumped the curb,
then careened back off the curb and hit the back of a city bus that
was making a right turn at the corner. The street and sidewalk areas
were crowded with post-Christmas shoppers, and when all was settled,
seven people were killed and scores injured. The truck actually crossed
the place where I was standing less than an hour before.
I really didn't need the
nap that night because I had no cabaret plans for the evening, but
naps are sort of addictive. BACK STAGE cabaret columnist John Hoglund
phoned me around 6:00 pm to see if I was OK - that was the first I
heard about the tragedy. Actually, the intersection of 34th & Sixth
also intersects with Broadway at that point, and it is one of the
most dangerous in the city. But, "the sparrow" is still being watched!
Bitter cold winter weather
has descended on New York City - no snow yet (my sisters in Michigan
are shovelling out from under a few feet of snow and the folks in
Buffalo, NY got six feet of snow in some areas!). I am so happy that
I purchased the new jacket just in time. It is down-filled, and makes
me look about 40 pounds heavier, bit it keeps me warm as toast.
Things are winding down,
and I will be going to see the last cabaret shows of 2001 this weekend.
I am already compiling a list of the best of 2001 - not an easy task,
since I saw so many shows and performers this year. I keep a notebook
for each month, and they are all stacked on my desk. I will start
by choosing the best shows for each month, and then whittle that list
down to the best for the year. Thankfully, it is a slow time for cabaret.
NEW YEAR'S EVE SHOWS
Be sure to check out the
list of New Year's eve events on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
- http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/NewYearsEve2001.shtml - for
all the great shows and happenings that we could find in NYC, Boston,
Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
By the way, if you want
to see Christine Ebersole at ARCI'S PLACE (450 Park Avenue South,
NYC - 212-532-4370 - http://www.arcisplace.com/), her New Year's Eve
show is the only one with any open seats - all her January shows have
been sold out already. This show has become the hottest ticket in
town - it was extended twice and sold out each time! But you better
make that reservation quickly.
The following shows listed
on the website are already sold out:
Valarie Sneade & Friends
at THE SUPPER CLUB at STEFANO'S (395 Grafton Street, Worcester, MA
- 508-752-6660).
Chris Barrett at DA ANTONIO
RISTORANTE (157 East 55th Street, NYC - 212-588-1545 - http://www.daantonio.com/)
- except for seating in the bar area.
Some seats are available
at all the others on the list (as far as I know) but this information
is already 24 hours old, and many folks wait until the last minute
to make reservations.
Also sold out is James
Beaman's "Marlene 100" show, celebrating the Dietrich Centenary tonight,
December 29th at JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-929-5410
- http://www.judyschelsea.com/).
