CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
"HERE & THERE" RETURNS TO TWO SECTIONS
HERE & THERE has returned to the previous format of 2 sections - with an important change for 2012 (but starting today as a preview). The first section will relate cabaret news items and information about CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE events and offers. The second section, appearing below the listings sections, will include opinions, essays, reviews, editorials and commentary as before. But I will also be including a brief summary of shows to see in the next several days. Of course I have a little "sign off" section at the bottom to close the issue as well.
MARCH IS CABARET MONTH ANNUAL GALA SET FOR FEBRUARY 29th
SAVE THE DATE: The 6th Annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH will be held on Wednesday, February 29th at 7:00 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC). We will begin promotion MARCH IS CABARET MONTH after January 1st, 2012 - please don't start making reservations (or volunteering to perform) until our current CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS promotion is over on December 31st. We will be reminding folks regularly (and some would say "relentlessly"), of the time, date and place so that we can have a full house (100) again this time around. And this show is actually a fund raiser for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH PROMOTION.
This is a big one - program booklet ads and all. NO RESERVATIONS WILL BE TAKEN BY THE VENUE. The coming week will be one of planning and decisions - ticket price, performers, and theme. I will be soliciting SPONSORS after the first of January to give us some promotional "seed money" including the cost of re-activating the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website, show cards, etc. And the number of sponsorships will help determine the ticket cost. As usual, members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will get to order their tickets a few days earlier than anyone else, and be eligible for a $10 discount off the ticket price. Stay tuned - more information will be sent in a special HAPPY NEW YEAR edition of the MEMBERS ONLY NEWSLETTER that will be sent on Monday, January 2nd, and in the next CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER on January 3rd.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is constantly evolving - stay tuned for more exciting changes in the weeks to come!
HERE & THERE PART 1 - THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF CABARET
Just a reminder, there is no newsletter this Thursday, December 29th - our end of year abbreviated publication schedule continues. The Monday issue for the week starting January 1st will be published on Tuesday, January 3rd. We will be publishing our ANNUAL NEW YEAR'S DAY members report on Monday, the 2nd of January, but no MEMBERS ONLY issues will be published on Saturday, December 31st. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will resume the normal Monday-Thursday rotation on January 9th, with the MEMBERS ONLY issue resuming on Saturday, January 7th.
Once again, a big thanks to the many subscribers/members who have sent in e-cards and real cards for the holidays and a special thanks to several folks who sent in special donations, gifts and bought gift memberships for their friends. Things would be really bleak this holiday time without your special gifts and support! This is the first Christmas/New Year's season in several years where I have some cash in the bank. I went without a winter coat last year - this year I got a nice, warm, new one! With a net hat (not a baseball cap) to go with it!
The CABARET EVENTS LISTINGS pages (there are 3 of them) have been updated into January, 2012. All the NEW YEAR'S EVE CABARET EVENT LISTINGS items have taken over the 2nd page of listings - you can check out the shows on December 31st in all parts of the world - JUST CLICK HERE:
Is your event missing? I add new items every day to all the listings, so send in that press release today! Remember, listing on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website is free - but you must send a complete and accurate release - a flier or a simple announcement/invite is not considered a press release. All press releases must be sent to stuhamstra@svhamstra.com - items sent to other addresses you might have on file for me might not be received.
If you sent in a press release for a December cabaret event before Monday, December 27th, (I have some received yesterday to add later today) and it is not posted, please re-send it at once.
Another reminder - please contact me only via e-mail at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com - not via Twitter, Facebook, etc. Most of my postings on the "social networking" sites are made via client programs like HOOTSUITE, TWEETDECK and automatic postings when I add items to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE blog, so I rarely am actually on this sites to read messages, comments, notes, etc. And I do not use invites to events in creating listings for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. So many of them are general invitations rather than actual press releases and are incomplete for my purposes.
YOUR PRESS RELEASE SHOULD INCLUDE:
Name & Address of venue - including reservation phone number and website URL (if available)
Date/time of event (please include the day of week to avoid any confusion)
Name of Performer(s)
Title of the show (if applicable)
Musical Director
Director (or Host)
Band members & their instruments (if applicable)
Cover charge and minimum
Short description of the show (2-3 sentences) including if it is new - a debut, etc.
Short bio of the main performer (3-4 sentences) including list of any awards received
Anything additional you might thing important
What I don't need: quotes from past reviews and supercilious descriptions. I always trim them off.
If course I will edit according to space available but more is better. A recent headshot (jpg sent as an attachment) is always helpful since it draws extra attention to the event listing. Else I might use a headshot I have on file that may no longer look like you at all!
Once again: e-mail to stuhamstra@svhamstra.com - the only e-mail address for me you should have in your address book.
Congratulations to Suzanne Carrico and Booth Daniels - cabaret's favorite singer/comic couple, who "tied the knot" (some would say "finally") last week! It was somewhat "hush-hush" unless you follow either one of this "dynamic duo" on twitter. I wish to both - together - a continued fun, happy, cheer-filled and blessed future!
Congratulations to Boston-area based songwriter Harriet Goldberg, who's song "Now and Then" was played on a recent episode of the revived HAWAII FIVE-O series on CBS. I'm sure the show will be repeated (aren't they always) - it's a Christmas themed show. The song comes on around a quarter way into the show. The cops run into a bar where "Now and Then" is being sung (by Providence, RI vocalist Debra Mann). Most of the other music in the show is high velocity chase music or Hawaiian Christmas music. You can hear the song in its entirety on her website - JUST CLICK HERE .
If you're in the Washington DC area, BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) has a Merry Christmas promotion this week offering a 50% discount for all 10:00 pm shows this week, through Friday, December 30th! Tickets must be purchased online, use code "XMAS" to apply the discount. A limited supply is available. Today: Dick Morgan (Piano). Wednesday, December 28th thru Friday, December 30th: Monty Alexander (Legendary Jamaican Pianist).
Several of the major rooms will take a little break at the start of the new year. THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE is closed this week through January 2nd for renovations, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 3rd with Joan Rivers kicking off the new year of performances. FEINSTEIN'S is dark until January 5th, when Lucie Arnaz moves in with her "Latin Roots" show. The CAFE CARLYLE will reopen on January 10th, featuring Paulo Szot through January 28th. THE ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM will be closed for at least 3 months after January 1st as the hotel undergoes another complete renovation. The official dates of the closure are January 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012.
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBER CD RELEASE NEWS:

The RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189 - ) has been celebrating its first annual "Season of Giving," a benefit to raise funds for San Francisco Bay Area nonprofits making a difference in their communities. Patrons are asked at the end of each performance to donate whatever they can, in the spirit of love. 100% of the proceeds will be donated. This year's "Season of Giving" benefits the Bay Area nonprofit organization BREAD & ROSES . Founded in 1974 by singer-songwriter Mimi Farina (sister of Joan Baez), BREAD & ROSES brings hope and healing through live music to isolated individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area. Every day, they bring the healing power of live music to children undergoing chemotherapy, teens battling substance abuse, families in homeless shelters, seniors nearing the end of life transition, and others living apart from friends and family while facing challenging times. Bravo! I wish I had noticed this item earlier!
It is never too late to join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - memberships start at just $10 per year. All information about membership is on the website - just CLICK HERE
ANOTHER REMINDER - MAC MEMBERS: It's time to file your submission forms if you wish to be included on the preliminary ballot for a MAC Award nomination! MAC is now accepting submissions for all MAC Award categories. The submission forms are easy to fill out, and can be printed from the MAC website. The RULES and QUALIFICATIONS for each award category can be found at on the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabaret) website:- http://www.macnyc.com/ )
The final deadline for MAC to RECEIVE the MAC AWARD application forms is Monday, January 16th. Because of the expedited timeline this year, MAC says they will not be able to extend this date.
If you're planning on running for a MAC AWARD this year, the SUPERSIZE BANNER SALE is a perfect way to keep your name before the voters and promote any reprise of your 2011 show - and at just $25 per week, it is a true bargain. Your advertised item will be included in EVERY issue of the newsletter and your banner will be seen around the world hundreds of times a day! For all details, including special rules and requirements, JUST CLICK HERE:
This is a great time to run a banner ad on the website, since only a few banners are running! This means that you can take advantage of the special 2-for-one price, and at the same time your banner will appear more often, since the banner appears at random - the fewer banners running, the more often each one is displayed!
By the way, REGULAR SIZE BANNERS are not available currently until after February 25th, 2012, when the SUPERSIZE BANNERS go back to their $50 per week cost. The special $25 per week deal is lower than the regular size cost of $30 per week.
One of my new year's resolutions this year is to promise myself I will not get irritated by cabaret performers who seek special attention, who want to perform in one of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE events, or who insist on a review of their show, who have never ever bothered to join as a member, run and ad, or send a donation. This resolution alone (if I can succeed in accomplishing it) should serve to lower my blood pressure considerably - better than any pharmaceutical potion modern medicine can invent! Supporting CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE by one of the above methods is never a requirement for any of the above perks - I never play that game. But, I must admit, I can't help but take your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE into consideration when making decisions as to whom I give extra special support.
So, below are the listing sections in the new CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER format. The advertisers and members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE make the regular publication of these newsletters and the continuation of the website possible. Please look over the listings and be sure to support our advertisers.
Shows giving discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE can be found on the website CLICK HERE: and are listed in every Saturday's MEMBERS ONLY NEWSLETTER

HERE & THERE PART 2 - COMMENTS, REVIEWS, OPINION, EDITORIALS
As you have probably noticed by now, the newsletter no longer includes that long, tedious, rarely read listings sections with all show data for the next several days. Instead, I will now include a brief collection of paragraphs here describing a few of the shows I especially like - the complete list of all the shows (at least the ones that sent me press releases) can be found in the three CABARET EVENTS LISTINGS pages on the website - JUST CLICK HERE:
TONIGHT (December 27th) I can highly recommend Anthony Santelmo Jr.'s show "4 Performances 4" to DON'T TELL MAMA at 7:00 pm (repeats nightly through Friday). Anthony delivers, time and again, some of the most interesting and entertaining shows in town. I'm going to try to make one of them. The Birdland Big Band with Tommy Igoe is performing at BIRDLAND all week as well. Of course, you can't go wrong catching Annie Ross at the METROPOLITAN ROOM at 9:30 pm, or anyone that the major (read "expensive") rooms are featuring all week: FEINSTEIN'S (Michael Feinstein & Barbara Cook), CAFE CARLYLE (Steve Tyrell), or ALGONQUIN (Andrea Marcovicci). Kim Nalley and Houston Person join forces to perform "A Soulful Jazz New Year" at RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO in San Francisco through Friday, for those who like to mix their cabaret with a little jazz & gospel. Kim Nalley was recently listed among the "Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area."
WEDNESDAY, in addition to those shows repeating from Tuesday, Kat Gang brings her unique vocal style to the ROSE ROOM OF THE PLAZA HOTEL every Wednesday at 9:00 pm. Tony Award winner Alice Ripley will perform a solo concert titled "Alice Ripley's Daily Practice" at 9:30 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (I just got word of this yesterday). The Eric Comstock Trio along with vocalist Barbara Fasano, will be performing at THE KITANO HOTEL'S GARDEN CAFE with sets at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Legendary Jamaican Pianist Monty Alexander will be performing at BLUES ALLEY all week (see special discount offer in part one of H&T above) and Sharon McNight takes an irreverent look at the traditions of the season in her show "Twisted Xmas; A Druid's View Of The Holidays" at DAVENPORT'S Wednesday night. Dana Lorge hosts "Wednesday Night at the Iguana" at 8:00 pm at IGUANA'S VIP LOUNGE and Terese Genecco and Shaynee Rainbolt do their jazz stuff at MIDTOWN JAZZ AT MIDDAY at 1:00 pm at ST. PETER'S CHURCH.
THURSDAY, The Lapis Luna Quartet with Vintage Jazz and Classical Swing Music from 8:30 to 11:30 pm at the ROSE ROOM OF THE PLAZA HOTEL and FEINSTEIN'S presents "THE BROADWAY HOOTENANNY," produced, created and hosted by Scott Siegel on Thursdays at 11:00 pm, this week featuring Kerry O'Malley, Kristen Beth Williams, Morgan James & Scott Coulter. After-Dark Award winning trio Foiled Again returns to DAVENPORT'S in Chicago, Thursday & Friday.
FRIDAY brings us, in addition to shows repeating nightly from above, vocalist and recording artist Scot Albertson with two different shows (at 8:00 & 10:00 pm) at THE KITANO HOTEL'S GARDEN CAFE. Acclaimed pianist Kathleen Landis and crooner Frank Dain are at NINO'S TUSCANY (117 West 58th Street, NYC - 212-757-8630) on Fridays & Saturdays from 9:30 pm to 12:30 am.
And that brings us to NEW YEAR'S EVE - SATURDAY, December 31st. The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website has a list of dozens of shows around the world. JUST CLICK HERE
Personally, I'm staying home! I have a jar of pickled herring, some TRISCUITS, a bowl of Onion/Sour Cream dip, some chips, and, if my roommate Daniel is home, maybe a small mushroom pizza.
SUNDAY is NEW YEAR'S DAY - the streets will be quiet (after all the revelers go home - some bars will be open until 11:00 am, serving breakfast). If I can, I want to get to Sunday Jazz Brunch Gabrielle Stravelli at LE PESCADEUX (90 Thompson Street, NYC - 212-966-0021) some time between 12:30 and 4:00 pm. When I first decided to move to NYC over 30 years ago, I checked out an apartment on Thompson Street in an original tenement building, including a bathtub in the kitchen! Rent was $500 per month (stabilized). It's probably all gone condo and co-op by now. So I want to walk that block to see if I can find the place.
This issue again is about 60% shorter than pre-format change issues. Please let me have your comments, complaints, suggestions on the new format.
