HERE & THERE - PART I
Well, with the sunrise at 6:30 am, here in NYC, MARCH IS CABARET MONTH officially began! And with the Winter Olympics out of the way, our thoughts can be devoted completely to cabaret!
MARCH IS CABARET MONTH used to be bracketed by the original BACK STAGE MAGAZINE BISTRO AWARDS at the end of February, and the MAC AWARDS at the end of March. BACK STAGE dropped their awards event (recently jump re-started under the name BISTRO AWARDS), to be held this year on Tuesday, April 13th at THE GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB. Meantime, the MAC Awards event won't be held until Tuesday, May 4th at B.B.KING'S BLUES club.
So that leaves it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to continue the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH tradition, with its own kick-off gala on Tuesday night, March 2nd, at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER. No tickets are available - we sold out over a week ago - so please don't show up tomorrow night expecting to be seated. I wouldn't mind so much, but the NY Fire Department has some very strict rules. We had 3 cancellations, but we had 10 folks on the waiting list, so they are already gone, with 7 left awaiting. We're not even taking any more names for the waiting list. No seats available - even for press. Please don't embarrass yourself (and us) by showing up at the door without a confirmed reservation.
We did have a few cancellations among the songwriters on our list - these folks are in high demand for paying gigs, and during the 6 weeks between the time they accepted our invitation to attend, other paying offers were accepted. And one songwriter is flying into NYC - currently unable to get a flight in time to arrive by showtime. But we have a grand cast of performers, thanks to our producer, Tom Stajmiger. And the weather people anticipate no snow for Tuesday night (and we all know how accurate their predictions are!).

So there you have it - CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE's MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebration in March. BISTRO AWARD celebration in April. MAC AWARD celebration in MAY. The Adelaide Cabaret Festival in Australia is in June (June 11th through 26th ) and this morning we received word that the inaugural Melbourne Cabaret Festival in Australia will be held in July (July 22nd to 25th).
OK, we missed one event - the most important one of all: THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION to be held in July - tentatively set for Tuesday, July 6th (we're looking for a space to accomodate as large an audience as realistically possible, or may hold the event over two or three days). More news on that as soon as we pick an exact date, time & place. Suggestions welcome (Madison Square Garden is already taken that week).
Now comes the challenge: I have 46 new cabaret news items to squeeze in this issue - and only 3000 words of space left to do so. We'll see how close we come to making it!
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. And even more news can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS ONE NIGHT WITH YOU
A MARCH IS CABARET MONTH TWEET PICK!
Raven O will performs his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - at THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: http://www.telecharge.com/ ) on Tuesdays, February 23rd & March 2nd at 8:00 pm. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. Already at the age of 7, Raven O knew his hometown of Oahu, Hawaii was too small for him. He had his sights on the Big Apple. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. His notoriety grew when he began touring with Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. After being recommended by his best friend Joey Arias, the troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City. Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, happened to be in the audience and after the show, he invited Raven O to mc his downtown theatre, The Box. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical cd this summer. He will preview the album this spring with a special pre-release of "Heaven", a cover of the classic Psychedelic Furs song. Tickets are $21.50 - group rates available.

NYC: MIKE SCHUIL PUTS HIS TOES IN THE SAND AT THE DUPLEX

Vocalist Mike Schuil brings his show "Toes In The Sand" to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) on Friday, March 19th at 7:00 pm. The show marks Mike Schuil's return to New York cabaret for the first time since his well-received debut, "Songs From Across The River - Springsteen & Sinatra." This time he ventures a bit further afield from his native New Jersey for a mostly Brazilian evening of songs both lighthearted and dramatic. It's a warm, tropical breeze on a cold winter's night. Working with a trio of accomplished musicians (Wells Hanley on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Jeff Davis on drums) and teaming once again with director Gerry Geddes, Mike takes a big step forward as a cabaret performer. The show features songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stephen Bishop, Richard Rodney Bennett and others. Of course, not wanting to journey too far away from his roots, there will be a few Sinatra moments, and even a bit of Bruce. His smooth vocals combined with the simmering sounds of his trio promise that "Toes In The Sand" should be a delightful trip south of the border. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
The storm (26 inches of snow in total) has past, after battering us for close to three days. Temperatures in the 40s (f) the next few days will turn it all to slush and puddles, but at least sidewalk hiking will be safer. I managed to get in two great strolls on Saturday & Sunday, after being "apartment bound" for a few days. Just in time for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH! After the newsletter goes out I will walk down to KINKOs on Houston Street to have the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA programs printed. Thanks to the hard work of our gala producer, Tom Stajmiger (will I be able to pronounce it properly when I thank him tomorrow night?), I have had very little work to do on this event, except promotion and ticket sales (which all ended last week).
On Saturday we sent out our weekly MEMBERS' ONLY NEWSLETTER in a new format -and so far response from the members has been encouraging. For the first time we were able to include photos and artwork. It takes a little extra work, and we already spotted some possible improvements. Because the regular newsletters are quite long to begin with, we're not sure if we can transition the new format to these issues, unless we go "daily" with shorter issues. The brain is spinning.

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about but we've run out of space - 4 of the 46 new events I started with will have to wait to Thursday's issue.
