HERE & THERE - PART I

I guess you could call it a blizzard - at least that's what the NYC TV weather reporters were all calling it, but I actually went out three times yesterday with very little "blizzard-type" problems. First trip out was to deposit some checks so I would have cash - around 9:00 am. And on my return I stopped by the grocery store for bread. The bread truck hadn't made a delivery yet, and the shelves were bare from the Tuesday shoppers who stocked up in anticipation of the storm. Just about an inch of slushy stuff was on the ground, with very little snow falling.

So at 1:00 pm, seeking bread to make a sandwich for my lunch, I went out again, this time with a lot of snow falling, about 5 or 6 inches of the slush-mix (temperatures hovered just around freezing all day) about, but the sidewalks were shoveled, so no problem.

Finally, at 7:00 pm, my pal Daniel called. He had been to my mail box on Ninth Avenue, and had some mail to bring me - including two more checks. So I took the bus once again to First Avenue and met him there, and after banking we went to our favorite NYC restaurant for Peruvian rotisserie chicken dinner. Except for banks of snow along the curbs, making crossing the street a little tricky (and there were only 2 streets that needed crossing), there was not much of a problem at all. Blizzard? Not for me.

I did attempt to "earn my keep" by sending e-mails to all the clubs that were on my list of shows for last night, asking them to inform me of any cancellations, which I passed along to the 340 cabaret folks who follow on my TWITTER accounts, and on the home page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, with notices on the website's MESSAGE BOARD and on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG. Not all the clubs responded, but at least we were able to get the word out for those that did.

PR Superstar Don Schaffer sent out the first press releases on Wednesday for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH - we had to wait for some information to come in - and we immediately sold a slew of tickets to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA which kicks off the promotional month on March 2nd. This leaves us with less than a dozen tickets left to sell - with just over two weeks to go before showtime. And our producer (who is in charge of lining up performers) is actually still in the process of booking one or two more! Check out the list in the item at the top of this issue. Celebrity MC Richard Skipper be introducing the performers at the show, so you won't have to worry about me garbling the intros. Best of all, I'll be able to have something stronger than iced coffee or diet coke during the show!

I thought we would be completing all the items for February in today's issue and get a good cut into articles for March shows, but we got a pile of new releases for shows this month - especially from the west coast. We even got some last minute Valentine's Day show news. A full list of Valentine's Day cabaret events can be found on the website http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ - there's a special link on the home (opening) page.

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS ONE NIGHT WITH YOU

Raven O will performs his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - at THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: http://www.telecharge.com/ ) on Tuesdays, February 23rd & March 2nd at 8:00 pm. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. Already at the age of 7, Raven O knew his hometown of Oahu, Hawaii was too small for him. He had his sights on the Big Apple. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. His notoriety grew when he began touring with Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. After being recommended by his best friend Joey Arias, the troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City - to host Andre Balaz's 50th birthday party. Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, happened to be in the audience and after the show, he invited Raven O to mc his downtown theatre, The Box. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical cd this summer. He will preview the album this spring with a special pre-release of "Heaven", a cover of the classic Psychedelic Furs song. Tickets are $21.50 - group rates available.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

Right now you can keep up with all the news about MARCH IS CABARET MONTH at http://www.svhamstra.com/MARCHISCAB/index.shtml - which is a website inside our website. I had to take this route this year because someone stole our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website URL (we ran out of extra cash over the summer and the registration expired. Now, thanks to our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH sponsors, we'll be back online with the special website very soon (it takes several days for a new website to become available world wide). I was hoping to announce it's opening today, but it's still not "live". Hopefully, I'll be able to announce it in the special MEMBERS' ONLY NEWSLETTER that goes out each Saturday, and then include it in our regular newsletter on Monday.

A special thank you to Raissa Katona Bennett, who's beautiful smiling face has graced the top-right position on our website for well over a year! She has been renewing the "tiffany" spot on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website again and again, changing the text on the side-bar ad each time she has a new show coming up. But, with no immediate plans for a new show, she's giving the spot up. Because she is an angel, she has not heisted to "pay in advance" from time to time when our funds have run low, and we really appreciate her support and friendship. She is a great supporter of cabaret and even has a special cabaret blog promoting some of her favorite shows.
Monday, February 15th, is PRESIDENT'S DAY in the U.S.A. and we pondered a bit as to whether we would publish the next newsletter on Tuesday, since about 40% of our subscribers receive their newsletters at a business e-mail address. But, to tell the truth, observation of the holiday (which began as 2 February holidays, one for Lincoln and one for Washington) has become a major shopping/sale day rather than an observance of our country's presidents, so we're going to stick with our regular schedule.

Radio host Don Collester dropped me a note that Betty Buckley (currently appearing at FEINSTEIN'S) is interviewed next Tuesday on his show "Curtain Up" on WDVR-FM (89.7 - ) at 8:00 pm. Outside of the NE Pennsylvania area you can hear the show "streamed" . If you're performing in the NE Pennsylvania/West NJ area, Don is the person to contact for promoting your show.

We got some speedy responses/corrections to our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH press release sent out yesterday. In the interest of brevity, we didn't go into deep detail on the origins of the earlier MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebrations, and we were reminded almost immediately that the BISTRO AWARDS are alive and well, and no longer celebrated as a private, invitation-only event. However, these new awards are no longer associated with BACK STAGE magazine - we should have explained ourselves better. Sorry.

And Erv Raible reminded us that the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion idea was actually proposed by him in in 1982 or 1983, but wasn't adopted by MAC or BACK STAGE until a few years later. I have to admit that my coverage of cabaret didn't begin until 1990 (although I did go to many shows starting about 10 years earlier).

Take a few minutes today to do one special thing to promote cabaret. It's quick, simple, and costs nothing. Every e-mail program I know of has a "signature" preference. If you could just put the words "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" as part of your signature through March 31st, every piece of mail you send will cause folks to think about cabaret - it might even cause some to write back to you to ask what it means, giving you an opportunity to "evangelize" for cabaret. Let's take back the word CABARET!

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about. More in Monday's issue.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Now, more than ever, we need your continued support.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
