HERE & THERE - PART I
First off, special to jazz lovers: MIDTOWN JAZZ, normally held on Wednesdays at ST. PETERS CHURCH, NYC will be presented on Tuesday this week because of a conflict of scheduling at the church. Details in the listings for February 2nd below.
As noted above, we opened our ticket sales for the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA, the kickoff event for the special cabaret promotion on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER over the weekend to members only, and as of noon today we have taken orders for 38 of the 75 seats available - we have passed the 1/2 way mark. A big thanks to all the members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE who signed up right away for this exciting cabaret event! Details are noted above.
If your from out of town, or otherwise can't attend the show on Tuesday, March 2nd, and would like to support our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion, you can order an ad in the program booklet for the show - details on a "click through" line on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website: http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ .
This week we are sending out, with the help of our "publicist to the stars" Don Schaffer, a press release about the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion - later in the month we will send a second release listing MARCH IS CABARET MONTH shows and events all over the world (ok, the USA mostly, but clubs and organizations in other countries are invited to join as well). More news on this coming soon.
Just a little note to clear up some confusion - CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is not a part of MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) and I personally do not have anything to do with the rules for the MAC Awards. I did take part in the NY NIGHTLIFE AWARDS held on January 25th, as one of the judges in the cabaret category. A few confused folks have contacted me about their category placement for this year's awards nominations, and I really can't help. Sorry.
Kate Peters was one of my "bosses" when I was working for Cabaret.Org in Fullerton CA, before I retired. She is a terrific cabaret singer and has a great blog that can be a big help for vocalists (or, for that matter, anyone who uses their voice professionally). Check it out at http://katepeters.com/blog/ . I am not a singer, but have found this little blog interesting and informative -and I wouldn't even have known about it, except she signed on as a follower of mine at TWITTER. You can follow her - and be informed on updates to her blog at http://twitter.com/k8peters .
If you are presenting a cabaret show or event during the month of March, 2010, our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion gives you a chance for extra promotion at no extra charge: All shows presented in March that include the phrase "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in their release materials will be included on the special website - and on that website the events are listed is special geographical page sections so folks in various parts of the universe that visit the website can easily find an event playing in their area. The event listing will appear as usual on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK and in the newsletter as well.
And if your March event news item gets to me by February 20th we will include your event in a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH EVENTS press release that our press rep Don Schaffer will be sending out to all cabaret news journalists and publications on his rather comprehensive press list. All you need do is include the slogan "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in your release and we'll include your info in ours!

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS ONE NIGHT WITH YOU
Raven O will performs his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - at THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: http://www.telecharge.com/ ) on Tuesdays, February 23rd & March 2nd at 8:00 pm. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. Already at the age of 7, Raven O knew his hometown of Oahu, Hawaii was too small for him. He had his sights on the Big Apple. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. His notoriety grew when he began touring with Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. After being recommended by his best friend Joey Arias, the troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City - to host Andre Balaz's 50th birthday party. Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, happened to be in the audience and after the show, he invited Raven O to mc his downtown theatre, The Box. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical cd this summer. He will preview the album this spring with a special pre-release of "Heaven", a cover of the classic Psychedelic Furs song. Tickets are $21.50 - group rates available.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
While we kept this issue as short as possible today, its "construction" took a lot longer than usual for two reasons: First, I broke my "never on Sunday" rule and went to see Kim Smith's MORPHIUM show at DON'T TELL MAMA last night - at a time when I am usually going over the items submitted and reworking them for use in the newsletter. And secondly, there was so much missing information in many of the articles sent in, it took me an extra hour or so tracking things down.
Most times, when an item presented for publication is submitted for publication and is missing more than two vital pieces of information, I toss it aside to be included (if it hasn't gone stale by then) in the next issue. But there were some such events that I simply wanted to include, so I had to spend a lot of time this morning "googling" for venue addresses, venue websites, missing cover charge information, etc. Now its already 12:15 and I have no more time for "HERE & THERE"!

With this issue we have included (with a few exceptions - see above) all news items for appropriate events through February 21st, for which actual press releases were received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier or a website link. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only). Thanks.
Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). Tickets go on sale on the website Monday, February 1st.

Take a few minutes today to do one special thing to promote cabaret. It's quick, simple, and costs nothing. Every e-mail program I know of has a "signature" preference. If you could just put the words "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" as part of your signature for the next 10 weeks, through March 31st, every piece of mail you send will cause folks to think about cabaret - it might even cause some to write back to you to ask what it means, giving you an opportunity to "proselytize" for cabaret. Let's take back the word CABARET!
And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about. More in Monday's issue.
