HERE & THERE - PART I

This was supposed to be our "Valentine's Day" round-up issue, but I am amazed at the number of shows on February 14th that I personally know about that failed to send in a press release! And I have one release that fails to name the venue, and when I "googled" the address there was no club or theater at that location. The performer is real, but is the show?

By the way, the list of shows on the 14th of February does not include shows already published in previous issues of the newsletter - for those events check the DIARY/DATEBOOK on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) - just click on the button at the top of the page marked DIARY/DATEBOOK or any of the several other links on the home page.

Meantime, I have been fine-tuning the website to get set for the sale of tickets to our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA - the members will get a chance to order tickets on Saturday, and sales to everyone will be available after the newsletter goes out on Monday. All current 2010 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be allowed to order one additional ticket for a non-member friend at the discounted member price.

On Monday we will also begin distributing the first set of fliers about MARCH IS CABARET MONTH to the clubs and venues here in NYC (at least the ones that permit us to). Once again a big thanks to Hector Coris who designed the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH logo for us last year. We've ordered additional cards to be distributed at MARCH IS CABARET MONTH associates around the country. More news on this on Monday as well.

Happy Birthday to WBAI & EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN radio host David Kenney, who will celebrate his birthday by treating himself to all his favorite music on his show on Sunday night at 9:00 pm - details in the listings below.

You can have a double treat catching shows by two of my favorite NYC female vocalists on Sunday night. Raissa Katona Bennett is performing at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER as part of the Cabaret Cares Benefit series, and Sue Matsuki will be performing at FEINSTEIN'S at 8:30 pm -and Raissa has graciously trimmed the length of her show so that folks attending her 7:00 pm event will be able to leave a few minutes earlier to make it uptown and crosstown for Sue's show. Folks planning to make this journey should tell their waiter at Raissa's show to prepare the check well before the end of the show so that they can be paid up and leave the show without delay.

If you are presenting a cabaret show or event during the month of March, 2010, our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion gives you a chance for extra promotion at no extra charge: a second listing of your show on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website! All shows presented in March that include the phrase "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in their release materials will be included on the special website - and on that website the events are listed is special geographical page sections so folks in various parts of the universe that visit the website can easily find an event playing in their area. The event listing will appear as usual on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK and in the newsletter as well.

And if your March event news item gets to me by February 20th we will include your event in a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH EVENTS press release that our press rep Don Schaffer will be sending out to all cabaret news journalists and publications on his rather comprehensive press list. All you need do is include the slogan "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in your release and we'll include your info in ours!

If you've been around the NYC nightlife scene for a while - especially the theater district, you will fondly remember SAM'S RESTAURANT and it's star "man at the piano" Ken Lundie. SAM'S building was sold, along with neighboring buildings, for construction of another high-rise office/apartment/hotel structure a few years ago, and we've all missed Ken and his great talent of hosting open mic events and showcases. We're glad to report on the anticipated return of Mr. Lundie to the theater district with new post-theater open mic & showcases, this time to TRATTORIA DOPO TEATRO (125 West 44th Street, NYC). A new piano has already been installed on the lower level, and all that remains it the setting of a show schedule - stay tuned.

It's never too late to join as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - for just $20 you can become a SILVER member through July 5, 2010! Show discounts, advertising rebates & discounts, a free CD Sale Page, and a host of other benefits await you. Your membership donations help us keep this operation going all year long. Just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/Membership.shtml ) for details.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

As announced last issue, my pal Daniel and I attended the 8th Annual NY Nightlife Awards show at THE TOWN HALL on Monday night, January 25th. There is no possible way I can describe to you the full three-hour event, with stars and rising stars from cabaret, Broadway and jazz, but there were a few highlights - dazzling ones - that stand out in my mind.

First off, I discovered once again that great talents often come in small packages. Johnny Rogers rocked the roof off the hall with his number, "The Birth of the Blues" which opened the second act. Johnny shared the OUTSTANDING CABARET VOCALIST award with Baby Jane Dexter, who captured our hearts in the first act with her medley of "Love Hurts" & "Not a Day Goes By". And the diminutive Tovah Feldshuh (a special guest performer) destroyed what was left of the stage after Johnny's act, with a spoof on Golda Meir and what it would be like if Golda did stand-up comedy Sophie Tucker style! That's what I call Entertainment!

The show rolled by so quickly, Daniel and I found ourselves at TRATTORIA DOPO TEATRO for the post-show cast party before we realized that we were in THE TOWN HALL nearly 3 hours!

And a special little mention of two very famous folks we met personally for the first time at the party - although we've seen the perform often. The Academy Award winning Celeste Holm (one of the few people at the party actually older than me) was at our table, and a most gracious lady she is! Her husband, opera singer Frank Basile was seated with us as well. The room was quite crowded and noisy, be we were able to have pleasant conversation amid the din. And I introduced myself to the afore-mentioned Ms Feldshuh and mentioned that my friend Daniel recognized her as soon as she hit the stage from her many appearances as McCoy's lawyer nemesis on LAW & ORDER. She actually came over to our table to introduce herself to Daniel, and promptly switched to speaking Spanish with him! Now, that's a classy lady!

Take a few minutes today to do one special thing to promote cabaret. It's quick, simple, and costs nothing. Every e-mail program I know of has a "signature" preference. If you could just put the words "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" as part of your signature for the next 10 weeks, through March 31st, every piece of mail you send will cause folks to think about cabaret - it might even cause some to write back to you to ask what it means, giving you an opportunity to "proselytize" for cabaret. Let's take back the word CABARET!

We're a half-hour late in sending this out - and I still have a lot more to tell you about. More in Monday's issue.

And that's just about the way it was.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!
