MARCH IS CABARET MONTH NEWS & UPDATES

DON SCHAFFER TO HANDLE PRESS FOR MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

We're very happy to announce that Don Schaffer will be handing press relations, sending out press releases and personally contacting writers and journalists regarding our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion this year. Don knows more about the details of promoting cabaret than just about anyone in the business. For many years he was the booking manager at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM and rubbed elbows with members of the cabaret press almost nightly. Now he is offering his expertise and connections to MARCH IS CABARET MONTH.

Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at the THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ) on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm has already announced this year's theme - "The Composers of Cabaret". Some fantastic and talented songwriters will take part in the show, including David Friedman, John Bucchino, Amanda McBroom and Alex Rybeck (Alex will also be serving as musical director for the event). Richard Skipper will be the MC for the gala. Tom is currently contacting a number of additional composers and performers from the world of cabaret and Broadway to take part. More news on this coming soon.

The Gala is the kick-off event of the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebration. Tickets will go on sale after February 1st but sponsors are already assured prime seating for the show.

HERE & THERE - PART I

I hope to see many of my friends from cabaret at the 2010 NY NIGHTLIFE AWARDS show tonight at THE TOWN HALL (starts at 7:00 pm). This annual show (now in it's 8th year) is always a dazzling event, drawing stars from cabaret, jazz and comedy both on stage and off. The awards are chosen by the critics and reviewers in each of these fields - about two dozen of them - and so you can be assured that every winner is the best of the best. The winners don't make those often embarrassing and/or long winded acceptance speeches, they perform instead! And several other top acts perform as well. My pal Daniel and I look forward in eager anticipation to this gala each year, because we get a chance to see some good friends from cabaret, but also get a chance to see performers from jazz and comedy (no way I can personally get to all these various shows during the year). See details in today's top story above and in the listings below - tickets are still available.

A big thank you to all the wonderful folks who responded to our MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter on Saturday and signed on as sponsors for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH. The more sponsors, the more promotion we can do. And your support allows us to make more use of our publicist, Don Schaffer (see item above). This is the first year we are using a real publicist to get the word out about our month-long celebration of the art and the artists of cabaret.

One of my personal goals in the whole MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion is to try take back the word "cabaret" from those who use it to describe other forms of entertainment. Even the city of NY uses the term improperly in their their list of rather draconian cabaret laws, to describe a place where dancing takes place. Their original intention (limiting the number of musicians in a club, limiting public dancing, etc.) was not a noise ordinance, the way it's enforced today. It was part of an anti-black movement to legalize the closing of jazz and dance clubs that were proliferating - in an era before amplification. And another ordinance, forbidding the use of the word "burlesque" adopted in the speakeasy days, caused the producers of these events to steal the word "cabaret."

The very first sponsor donation that came in for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH was used to purchase a new "suite" of computer programs to enable us to work more efficiently - I have been hoping to make this purchase for over a year. It will allow us to take CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to a new level. In fact this issue is being put together using one of the new programs, and I haven't even begun to tap its additional power and abilities.

Computer programs take a while to learn, and we've been coordinating the use of this new set of tools into the several ways we currently try to promote the art & artists of cabaret:

- our twice-a-week newsletter - Mondays & Thursdays
- our weekly MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter every Saturday
- our membership program providing show discounts, CD sale pages, blog & YouTube links, ad discounts/rebates and other benefits
- the 7200+ page website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) with its listings, articles, reviews and message board
- the blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) with up-to-the-minute messages and bulletins
- the special website for songwriters ( http://www.CabaretSings.com/ ) where songwriters and composers can promote their musical creations
- our 4 twitter accounts that allow us to keep in instant contact with our "followers"
- our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion
- our 3 annual shows: MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA, BIRTHDAY PARTY and CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

Stay tuned: you ain't seen nuttin' yet! Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!

If you are presenting a cabaret show or event during the month of March, 2010, our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion gives you a chance for extra promotion at no extra charge: a second listing of your show on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website! All shows presented in March that include the phrase "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in their release materials will be included on the special website - and on that website the events are listed is special geographical page sections so folks in various parts of the universe that visit the website can easily find an event playing in their area. The event listing will appear as usual on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK and in the newsletter as well.

And if your March event news item gets to me by February 20th we will include your event in a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH EVENTS press release that our press rep Don Schaffer will be sending out to all cabaret news journalists and publications on his rather comprehensive press list. All you need do is include the slogan "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in your release and we'll include your info in ours!

Click here to read all about MARCH IS CABARET MONTH including all the benefits of sponsorship.

It's never too late to join as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - for just $20 you can become a SILVER member through July 5, 2010! Show discounts, advertising rebates & discounts, a free CD Sale Page, and a host of other benefits await you. Your membership donations help us keep this operation going all year long. Just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/Membership.shtml ) for details.

Take a few minutes today to do one special thing to promote cabaret. It's quick, simple, and costs nothing. Every e-mail program I know of has a "signature" preference. If you could just put the words "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" as part of your signature for the next 10 weeks, through March 31st, every piece of mail you send will cause folks to think about cabaret - it might even cause some to write back to you to ask what it means, giving you an opportunity to "proselytize" for cabaret. Let's take back the word CABARET!

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

It's a rainy day here in NYC - a great day to get some work done. On top of that, tonight I get to go to the 2010 NY NIGHTLIFE AWARDS SHOW at THE TOWN HALL at 7:00 pm. This should prove to be a grand day!

As noted above, our Thursday issue (January 28th) will include all the Valentine's Day cabaret events that we have on file. If you or someone you know, is presenting a Valentine's Day themed show on Sunday, February 14th, please send in that press release pronto. It takes me several hours a day to sort out and edit/rewrite these releases, and frankly, when one comes in that requires a lot of rewrite or is missing a lot of information, it gets set aside and often misses getting included for lack of time. Please include all the info you can in your release - biographical info is especially important, as is a brief description of the theme of your event and maybe a few song titles. More is better - after all, I'm called an editor, which means I trim away the excess. But I can't add the missing pieces.

Want to be informed quickly of show cancellations, schedule changes, and other cabaret information for free? Just sign up for a TWITTER account and follow follow CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at http://twitter.com/cabarethotline And if you aren't already a TWITTER member, just click on this same link and then join TWITTER by entering a name (you need not use your own name) and a password. It helps to enter some information on your profile (including a link to your website if you have one) so people can follow you and read your comments if you wish. Its all free.

NOTE ABOUT BANNERS/SIDEBARS: In addition to a mention in every issue of the newsletter, all events/items advertised on the website also get a plug twice each week on our blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) - at no additional charge. We also "tweet" advertised events on the day of the event to all our followers.

With this issue we have included (with a few exceptions - see above) all news items for appropriate events through February 13th, 2010, for which actual press releases were received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier or a website link. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only) and neither is a website link. Thanks.

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). Tickets go on sale on the website soon.

Right now we are undertaking one of the most important projects of our 20 year history: the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion. We began this 20 year-long saga in 1990 with one simple goal in mind: to promote the art & artists of cabaret. This is not part of a "ego" trip of mine, it's part of a crusade. And, like any crusade, one person can't do it alone. I am so grateful to the 370 current members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, the advertisers and the sponsors of our various events, for giving their financial support to what we're all about. Your support allows me to afford the best computer equipment and programs, to finance the websites and blogs, and finance my peregrinations around town. I wish I could hire some writers to contribute articles and reviews, but with our income down for the third or fourth year in a row, we have set that dream aside for now. This is strictly a "one man operation"! (I always have to laugh when a publicist asks me to "come myself or send one of my staff" to review a show he is promoting).

You probably noticed that (except for last Thursday's issue) the newsletters are about 25% shorter than before. With the changes we are working on, we might be able to cut another 25% or go back to a once-a-week publication setup. Stay tuned.

And that's just about the way it was.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
