HERE & THERE - PART I
We were really swamped with news items for the last weeks in January, and this issue is jam packed as we try to include all the remaining show listings for this month. And the news has pretty well taken up all the room and there's little space left for commentary and opinion for this HERE & THERE section.
Actually, it is just as well, since after hearing the news of the earthquake disaster yesterday in Haiti, it is very difficult to write anything "clever & cute" this morning. My brain still echos with the sounds of screaming by maybe 1/2 million people today - I spent a mostly sleepless night deep in thought and prayer.
So, what follows are one or two important items and just a bit of news about MARCH IS CABARET MONTH (so glad to have Alex Rybek signed on as musical director - see item in the "Top Stories" section above, and I've been getting some pretty exciting reports from Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on March 2nd. I will have a few more comments at the bottom of the newsletter, after the listings.
We received a note from Anna DeLeon that her club, ANNA'S JAZZ ISLAND in Berkeley, CA has closed. She has not been happy with the changes in the building where the club was located since new owners have taken over, and she finally reached an agreement with the new landlord to buy out her lease. We published the complete e-mail on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG (http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and will keep you informed if/when a new location is found.
With the closing of CATERINA'S after this weekend, Jerry Scott will be performing at PADRE FIGLIO (310 East 44th Street, NYC) on Fridays & Saturdays, January 29th & 30th, February 12th & 13th and 26th & 27th in their new Piano Room from 8:00 pm until midnight. Jerry has just two nights left at CATERINA'S - this Friday & Saturday, January 15th & 16th, from 9:00 pm to midnight. As mentioned last issue, Jerry urges everyone who wants to attend these nights to make a reservation - he predicts the place will be packed even more than usual (especially with the legendary cabaret reviewer/writer/editor John Hoglund holding his birthday party there on Friday night).
If you are presenting a cabaret show or event during the month of March, 2010, our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion gives you a chance for extra promotion event at no extra charge: a second listing of your show on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website! All shows presented in March that include the phrase "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in their release materials will be included on the special website - and on that website the events are listed is special geographical sections so folks in various parts of the universe that visit the website can easily find an event playing in their area. The event listing will appear as usual on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK and in the newsletter as well.
There is no charge to have your item appear in the newsletter or on both websites. Just send in your release - and remember, a flier is not a press release (and please, no PDF files - no imbedded photos - txt or doc releases only). Items received with incomplete information cannot be used. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers).
And if your March event news item gets to me by February 20th we will include your event in a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH press release going out to all cabaret news journalists and publications on our list. You include MARCH IS CABARET MONTH in your release and we'll include your info in ours!
By the way, the same banner and sidebar ads that run on the regular website also will appear on every page on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website at no extra charge - giving advertisers "more bang for their buck". MARCH IS CABARET MONTH sponsors will also fine their name & website link on every page of the special website.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
With the arrival of warmer weather (as temporary as that might be) I plan to venture forth tonight for some cabaret. Problem is, with so many great shows tonight and the next few days, I can't quite make up my mind where to go. I am sort of inclined to attend the only show on today's DATEBOOK/DIARY on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) that I haven't seen yet, that I can also afford: Carol McCann's new show, "The Goddess in my Building" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 7:30 pm.
If the weather holds up, tomorrow night I want to be sure to catch Nicole Henry's show, also at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 9:45 pm. Booking manager Tanya Holt has been urging me to catch this show for months (Nicole has had a monthly slot at the venue for some time) but my schedule has always had a conflict. But now that Ms. Henry is running a major ad on the website, I'm going to try to make it this time. Now, problem is, what show to see before this one?s
Saturday night Tommy Femia has KT Sullivan as guest at DON'T TELL MAMA at 8:30 pm in his JUDY! LIVE! show, and I don't want to miss that one - hoping of course that he and KT will sing a duet. I usually take Sundays off, but I have been so "cabaret deprived" for so many days, I just might break my "rule" and catch a show or two (wish that Trudi Mann was still having brunch shows somewhere - always a Sunday treat).

With this issue we have included nearly all news items for appropriate events through February 4th, 2010, for which actual press releases were received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier instead of a press release. We do not accept fliers, e-invites and similar items as press releases. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only) and neither is a website link. Thanks.
