CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #091207 - Monday, December 28, 2009
Since 1990 Your First, Best and Only Complete Source of Cabaret and Nightlife News

NOW IN Our 21st Year SPREADING THE NEWS OF CABARET!
COVERING CABARET & NIGHTLIFE ON THE INTERNET SINCE 1997!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

These newsletters are a FREE service to promote the art and artists and entertainers of nightlife & cabaret.

SPECIAL NOTE TO SUBSCRIBERS

Please note that with the New Year's Holiday falling on Friday, there will be just one issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this week. Today's issue is a "double issue" covering all the news we can fit, plus all the shows that are giving discounts to members and the events and items running ads on the website. The next regular issue will on Monday, January 4th, when we resume our regular twice-a-week schedule.

HERE & THERE - PART I

This has certainly been a strange year - and not just in the world of cabaret. Multi-billion dollars in "stimulus" money seems to have evaporated instead of trickled down. And from my observations, cabaret has been especially hard hit. The club schedules lately show a lot of blank spaces week after week, and more seats at shows seen that used to be filled to capacity now go empty.

We've felt it here at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as well. Even with lowering our banner ad prices and offering special deals to members, our advertising income fell another 20% or so this year. Some of our long-time regular advertisers have not taken ads on their shows lately, which has me puzzled as well.

Most disappointing are the number (over 100) of long-time CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members (some of them good friends) who did not rejoin for 2009-2010. Frankly, it is sort of hard to understand, since we offered free memberships to all 2008-2009 members who could not afford to rejoin this year. Only about 50 folks took advantage of the offer. All this in spite of new benefits we added in July. All this has combined to make it more difficult for me than ever to attend cabaret shows and events. And in prior years, when we had the funds to pay others to review shows, there was nothing in the budget this year.

We did manage to sign up (including free memberships) 375 members for 2009-2010, for which we are thankful. Last year our membership topped out at 436. It's not too late to join - each regular $20 SILVER membership is truly appreciated. You can find all the benefits and levels of membership by clicking on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

But that's looking back - we continue to look ahead. We have had gains on two fronts since July. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE subscriptions (which are free) continue to climb. The 3000 subscriber mark continues to elude us, but hopefully a year from now, it will be achieved. And these are genuine subscriptions - we don't send the issues to anyone unless they have actually subscribed personally.

And our website visitor visits continue to grow as well - some days we even hit 10,000 pages visited! I credit part of this to TWITTER - we now have over nearly 200 "followers" on our personal twitter account http://twitter.com/stuhamstra and 135 followers on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE account http://twitter.com/cabarethotline . Here too, we block out non-cabaret followers (at the rate of 3 or 4 a day!). We promote the website and newsletter on both accounts daily - and announce updates to the website and the blog http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ as well. These are all new services started in 2009.

Looking forward as well, I hope you have made your plans for New Year's Eve, but just in case, check out the special New Year's Eve listings on the website at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewYear2009.shtml - we added two more today.

And another new service to our advertisers starts this week - we are adding a plug twice each week on our blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) for every show, CD, event or service being advertised. The postings will be added on Tuesdays and Fridays. This is in addition to the plus we give for every advertiser in every issue of our twice-weekly newsletter and on the website. No additional charge. Through January all banners are subject to a 10% discount as well (does not apply to sidebar ads - there is a special deal offered for members only for sidebars).

Check out the item in the listings below for January 25th - the New York Nightlife Awards show at THE TOWN HALL. This item arrived just too late to get in last Monday's issue.

And as soon as all the New Year's Eve festivities are over we will begin in earnest to promote our annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH events. Already PNW (Pacific Northwest Cabaret Association - http://profile.myspace.com/pnwcabaret ) has lined up events for March to celebrate, and MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets - http://www.macnyc.com/ ) is joining in with special events in March as well. We're sending out a special e-mail to all the cabaret organizations to invite them to take part as well - especially those that were involved last year, including DCCN (DC Cabaret Network - http://www.dccabaretnetwork.org/ ), CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/ ), BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists - http://www.bostoncabaret.com/ ) and CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/ ). All events will be promoted to the hilt in the newsletter, the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, blog & TWITTER and with special fliers distributed in the clubs.

In that connection, to get things rolling, we will reactivate the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website http://www.MarchIsCabaretMonth.com/ - which is off-line currently - as soon as we can afford to (coffers are bare right now). This means we're looking for sponsors (at $100 per unit). Sponsors will be mentioned (with website URLs if applicable) in all the promotional materials we publish and prominently published on the special website, through the end of March! If you are interested, send me a note at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com More on MARCH IS CABARET MONTH in next Monday's issue.

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). We have the date, we have the place - now we need to choose the acts, get some sponsors and start selling tickets.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. And even more news can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/

The show is Ms. Blackhurst's loving tribute to the songs made famous by the quintessential stage personality Ethel Merman. MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

In addition to all the great shows on New Year's Eve on December 31st, the heavens are going to be putting on a special show on that date as well. The second full moon of December 2009 will occur on that date (from which we get the expression "once in a blue moon") and there will be a partial lunar eclipse will take place on that date as well. I certainly hope these will be good omens - heaven knows we need some "reversal of misfortune" around here!

SPECIAL NOTE TO MAC MEMBERS: The application deadline to get the 2010 awards preliminary voting ballot is January 16th. Download application forms and rules at http://www.MACNYC.com/ . Please read all the rules and application forms carefully. Incomplete submissions will be disqulaified. The 2010 MAC AWARDS GALA will be held on Tuesday, May 4th at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/ ) - ticket order forms will be mailed with the final ballots to all MAC members. (2009 MAC memberships expire December 31, 2009 - you can't vote if you're not a member.)

I did get a new "toy" for Christmas. My pal Daniel gave me a shiny new iPod NANO (last year he gave me an iPod Touch - 1st gen). The NANO has one feature the Touch doesn't have (a feature that was added later), namely a microphone, which will allow be to record notes, ideas, and even interviews "on the road". It also has a mini-video camera, an fm radio and a pedometer (to help me keep track on my daily walks). Much fun ahead. My gift to Daniel? You will have to ask him.

We will be sending out a special "end of year" MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter on Saturday, January 2nd - a more detailed "look back" and "look ahead"

A word of caution to those who might be planning to be in Times Square on Thursday night, New Year's Eve. What they don't tell you, and what they don't show on TV, is the fact that when the ball drops at midnight, many of the revelers toss items into the air including bottles and cans from their celebrating. There are checkpoints at all entries to the square on that night, and backpacks and large bags are prohibited and/or subject to search, but these items seem to sneak in anyway, probably by folks who are staying within the perimeter of the checkpoints. What goes up must come down, and maybe on your head. Believe me, most of the clubs holding New Year's Eve parties we list on the website offer giant TV screens that will give you a better view of the event that most places outdoors. And leave the car at home and use public transportation.

With this issue we have included all news items for events through January 20th, 2010, for which actual press releases received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier instead of a press release. We do not accept fliers, e-invites and similar items as press releases. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only). Thanks.

Please note again that with the New Year's Holiday falling on Friday, this is the only issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this week. The Monday issue on the 28th when we get back to our schedule of two issues per week.

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! We have the date - now we need to choose the acts, get some sponsors and start selling tickets.

You can see all the events that have already appeared in previous newsletters on the website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section (click on the button at the top of every page so labeled). Look for more news on the blog (http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ).

And that's just about the way it was. Until Monday, January 4th then.
