HERE & THERE - PART I

Another issue, chock full of cabaret news, bursting at the seams. So just a few comments. I've been hitting the cabaret circuit with a vengeance since I am back running on all cylinders!

Monday I was at the METROPOLITAN ROOM for the new vocal group MARQUIS FIVE (actually more like the magnificent 7 if you add in musical director Mark Janas and director Peter Napolitano). Unbelievable, awesome vocals (and arrangements). They are still working on the show and asked me to come back a second time before writing a review, but believe me, what they presented on Monday was pretty perfect!

Tuesday I was back at the METROPOLITAN ROOM for Sue Matsuki & Edd Clark's magnificent FABULOUS CHRISTMAS SHOW (a CD of last year's show is available). My first official Christmas show of 2009. Much fun - fuller review soon.

Last night I was at DON'T TELL MAMA for Cynthia Crane's "John Denver, Bernie & Me" show, which has been getting a lot of buzz in the press and on TV (Cynthia was on GMA this morning and the BBC was taping last night's show). She really hit a homerun with this Bernie Madoff-themed production. No bitterness, actually - just a lot of fun, great songs and snappy deliver (Cynthia's trade-mark style). Fuller review soon.

Tonight I have planned "double header" - I say "planned" because it all depends on if this 70-year-old body gives my 23-year-old brain permission. I will be at the LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER Holiday Party at 7:00 pm and then hed downtown to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM for Ricky Ritzel's show at 9:45 pm. Daniel & I are secretly hoping that Leslie Anderson will pop in to sing a Mercer duet or two with Ricky.

Tonight there are two other shows going on that you should not miss: Gretchen Reinhagen's utterly fantastic (words cannot fully describe) tribute to Kay Ballard at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 7:30 pm. This show as AWARD WINNER marked all over it. It's the final performance this year (I know that it simply must be repeated in 2010!) Without a doubt, Gretchen is presenting one of the finest cabaret shows I've seen (and not just in 2009). I see a lot of standing ovations at the end of a lot of shows - and 95% of them are undeserved. This one will have you standing and cheering at the end, and is one of the 5% that truly deserve the accolade.

Meantime, over at THE DUPLEX at 9:30 pm tonight, Colleen McHugh is presenting her annual Christmas show, along with sidekick Miriam Plotkin - "THERE'S NOEL IN CHANUKAH!" probably one of the cleverest holiday show titles ever written and one of the most popular holiday shows to come into town from Chicago's DAVENPORT'S, described as "the ultra-cool, perennially unpredictable, super-fly, sure-to-be-sold-out, Judeo-Christian holiday extravaganza". Brilliant writing, great vocals, much fun. I'm sorry to have to miss it this year.

On Saturday night at 8:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN, be sure to catch the final 2009 performance of Joshua Warr in "Sing No Evil" - another sure-fire award winner! I said this in the newsletter a few weeks ago: "This young man does it all - singing, dancing, acting - one of the most talented performers to take a cabaret stage I have ever seen (and I've been doing this for nearly 30 years - 20 of them writing about cabaret). And at this show you get a "trio of greats" - Tracy Stark as musical director and Miles Phillips as director. The show features some of the most creative arrangements ever presented in cabaret." I've been trying to capture the excitement, the talent, the charisma, the skills, the fantastic writing, the great vocals, and how thrilled I was at this show in a review for about two weeks. It's simply impossible to capture the essence of this lad's performance in print - you must see it live! You can't keep your eyes off the Josh as he takes you on a "dissertation" on the subject of sin (and a more wholesome looking young man would be hard to find to cover this topic). A bevy of beautiful singer/dancers light up the stage a few times in the show, making for some great visual moments, and director Miles Phillip's has staged the show adroitly - always wisely keeping Mr. Warr the centerpiece. And several of the songs have been given amazing new arrangements - you will be startled by some really familiar ones done in new ways, revealing facets of meaning never discovered before. I sort of have it on my calendar for a repeat - it is that great a show. Maybe you will see me there (if your one of the smart ones who made an early reservation).

OK - enough for today.

ADELE ZANE RELEASES THIRD CD "A STRANGER IN TOWN"

Adele Zane's newest CD, "A Stranger in Town" is probably the perfect companion to your broken heart or to the heart you've just broken. More than willing to blur the boundaries between jazz, rock, pop and country, the duo have succeeded in creating a highly polished and well thought out merger of the genres. Todd Isler on hadgini, Jorge Roeder on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums round out a stellar selection of backing musicians.
