TODAY'S TOP STORY
BABY JANE DEXTER'S "IF" PRESENTED TOP CD OF 2009 AWARD
At the CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS PARTY on Monday, November 30th at DON'T TELL MAMA, the winners of the BEST CABARET CD OF 2009 were announced. Three CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members served as judges this year: A performer (Sue Matsuki), a Cabaret Maven (Joe Regan, Jr.) and a reviewer (John Hoglund). CDs were judged for 3 main qualities, with weighted points awarded in each area: VOCALS/INSTRUMENTALS, PRODUCTION/TECHNICAL QUALITY and PACKAGING/PRESENTATION.
Baby Jane Dexter's CD "IF", recorded live at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, came off with the top honors. There was a 3-way tie for second place, with the honors going to John Treacy Egan for "On Christmas Morning"; Jenna Esposito for "To Connie ... Love, Jenna"; and Greg Purnhagen's "Desiderio". The winning CDs, plus all 20 entries for this year's contest, can be seen on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE WEBSITE - http://www.svhamstra.com/ - and each CD cover is linked to a website where the CD may be purchased for Holiday Giving.

HERE & THERE - PART I
I am recovering from two events - the fantastic CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS party, produced by CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Monday, November 30th at DON'T TELL MAMA and also a very bard cold (not the flu, according to my doctor). Very fortunately I had already chosen the very talented and affable Jim Speake to MC the show, with just a few remarks from me at the very end. And, in spite of my worries, we had a nearly full house! Best of all, thanks to some very generous sponsors (including an anonymous one), we were able to offer the very lowest cover charge ever ($10 for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members and $5 for CABARET FOR SENIORS members) and still manage to break even.
A grateful thank you to all who took part in the show - especially Jim and our musical director Tracy Stark, who, I admit, had to carry most of the burden of production the final few days because I was ill. And also thanks to Sue Matsuki, who was there to help with some last minute tasks. Thanks as well to all the performers: Cynthia Crane, Joshua Warr, Booth Daniels, Kathleen France, Sue Matsuki, Edd Clark, Shirley Ritenour, Denise Whittier, Greg Purnhagen, Grace Cosgrove, John Treacy Egan, and Gretchen Reinhagen, plus a last-minute addition to the cast, Baby Jane Dexter, who closed the show.
We also awarded the winners of the TOP CABARET CD OF 2009, with Baby Jane taking the top award, and a three-way tie for second (after a second ballot resulted in the same tie, we decided to award 4 prizes instead of three). There is a report on the contest winners as our TODAY'S TOP STORY.
The 2009 CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS PARTY was sponsored in part by SCHUIL COFFEE - OUR SHOPPE (http://www.schuilcoffee.com/our-shoppe.html ), Lucille Carr-Kaffashan and Jim Van Slyke (http://www.jimvanslyke.com/ )
party
On Tuesday, we added two new pages to the website (which we do annually) to list all Holiday Cabaret Shows, as well as NEW YEAR'S EVE shows for 2009. A host of events are already posted on the HOLIDAYS page and over the weekend we will be adding some items just received to the NEW YEAR'S EVE page.
We will be doing things just a little different than usual this December - we will add items to these pages as received rather than waiting to publish them in the newsletter first. So you might want to check the page occasionally for new information. Of course, if you have a HOLIDAY THEMED show or a show on NEW YEAR'S EVE (or at least so themed), please send me, via e-mail, a press release a.s.a.p. Oh, and remember, a flier is NOT a press release. A good quality jpg headshot photo attached to your release will also help draw attention to your offering. Send to stuhamstra@svhamstra.com
The 2010 MAC Award rules and applications are now available at www.MACNYC.com where you can download and print them. It is essential that you read all the rules carefully and that all required documentation be included with your application because incomplete submissions will be disqualified. The Eligibility Committee does not have time to track down missing information. It is your responsibility to provide all required information. Please read all rules and application forms carefully. The deadline for all eligibility applications is January 16, 2010 - so make sure you mail your applications a few days ahead of time. Applications received after that date will not be accepted.
I lived in Jersey City, NJ for a few years and had two very famous neighbors, both cabaret icons. Julie Wilson lived just a block away and I could actually see her street (but not actually her house) from my kitchen window. And right downstairs from me live Ruby Rims! I owned a car at that time and would often give one or the other or both a ride home after a night of "cabareting". For many years, the fabulous Mr. Ruby Rims had a corporation called TEDDYCARE - and each Christmastime he would dress up in a teddy bear suit and distribute teddy bears and other stuffed animals to kids in hospitals around the area, as well as AIDS wards. The bears were collected at benefit shows he produced, in which just about every cabaret performer in town begged to be included.
But when Ruby discovered that he himself had contracted the virus, the event took on special meaning - to him and to all the members of the community. Unfortunately, his illness progressed to the point where putting on the shows and the teddy bear distribution became too much, and Ruby set the project aside. But, thanks to medical advances and discoveries, Ruby is back, and so are the TEDDYCARE shows - the first one is this Sunday night, December 6th at JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH (details in the listing below), and there are more scheduled for the following two Sundays. Each has a different, stellar cast of performers. You MUST take along a teddy bear as well as your cover charge (cash only). Here is a fantastic show, and a most worthwhile cause - cash proceeds go to the Actors' Fund Program & Judson Memorial Church.
All e-mail sent to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ends up in the same mailbox: stuhamstra@svhamstra.com - but e-mail sent to some of my other addresses (at yahoo.com, gmail.com, mac.com, me.com) have to be forwarded. This is done automatically, but occasionally I find items in those other mailboxes that never get sent on. I have the other addresses so that I can send items to yahoo & google groups, but to assure I receive your mail, please only use the stuhamstra@svhamstra.com address.
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. Cynthia Crane's latest CD "THE TIME HAS COME", recorded live at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM is now available, perfect timing for Holiday giving. ADELE ZANE RELEASES THIRD CD - "A STRANGER IN TOWN"
Adele Zane's newest CD, "A Stranger in Town" is probably the perfect companion to your broken heart or to the heart you've just broken. For singer/songwriter Zane's third CD she has enlisted the aid of virtuoso guitarist Andrew Green as both collaborator and arranger. More than willing to blur the boundaries between jazz, rock, pop and country, the duo have succeeded in creating a highly polished and well thought out merger of the genres. Todd Isler on hadgini, Jorge Roeder on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums round out a stellar selection of backing musicians. Jim Clouse makes a special guest appearance on drums and Hamcrest Riverton hands in a memorable cameo on Zane's original, Girl at the Bar. The CD is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/adele3 .

S.F.: MARIA MULDAUR AND HER QUINTET AT THE RRAZZ ROOM
Maria Muldaur, one of the finest interpreters of the American songbook, brings her new show to RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189 - http://www.therrazzroom.com/ ), Monday & Tuesday, December 14th & 15th at 8:00 pm. Born and raised in New York City's Greenwich Village, Muldaur was surrounded by bluegrass, jazz, blues and gospel music, but her very first musical influences were from the records of country and western singers. As a teenager, she became interested in 'girl groups' and formed her own, The Cashmeres, while in high school. As pop radio became less soulful, Maria turned to the wealth of American roots music. Maria joined The Friends of Old Timey Music, a group that traveled to the rural South to find legendary artists like Doc Watson, Bukka White, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt, and brought them north to present concerts to urban audiences. Deeply inspired, Maria left New York and traveled to North Carolina to learn fiddle. Maria then joined the popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Her first recorded song with them was "I'm a Woman," and it has been her theme song ever since. In her first solo album, she went platinum with "Midnight at the Oasis" which remains a staple song on multi-format radio throughout the country. Maria has mastered almost every genre of music and her audience continues to join her in her exploration of true American musical styles. Tickets are $35.
