SAD NEWS - EARL WENTZ - 1938-2009
Earl Wentz, 71, of New York City and Charlotte passed away at his home in Charlotte on Sunday, November 15th, following an extended illness. He is survived by his partner of 27 years, William B. Watkins of New York. Born March 22, 1938, composer, performer, arranger, and teacher Earl Wentz began his career at the age of 12, playing the piano at Charlotte's Amity Presbyterian Church. He became that church's first organist at the age of 15. Since 1993, Earl Wentz had been the organist and choirmaster at John Street Methodist Church in New York, the oldest Methodist congregation in America.
In New York, Wentz created the American Composer Series, an ongoing performance series in the cabaret format, paying tribute to the greatest composers of popular American music on the American scene, particularly those composers associated with Tin Pan Alley and the American Songbook. From 2000 to 2009, the series presented 15 original musical revues, many returning for multiple performances over several seasons (see http://www.americomps.com/ ).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the "Amity Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund", 2831 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC, 28205, or to the "The John Street Church Pipe Organ Restoration Fund". Checks should be made to "John Street Church", 44 John Street, New York, NY 10038. On the memo line "Organ Restoration Fund" or "In honor of Earl Wentz".

SPECIAL NOTE TO SUBSCRIBERS
There will be no issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER on Thursday, November 26th - a special "Thanksgiving" TRIPLE issue will be sent out instead on Friday the 27th, combining the regular issue with the MEMBERS ONLY and CABARET FOR SENIORS issues. Wishing all a Happy Holiday! Note that many cabaret rooms and piano bars may be closed on this day to permit their employees to attend traditional family gatherings. Be sure to phone ahead if planning to visit any venue.
HERE & THERE - PART I
First, a few words about Earl Wentz, who passed away on Sunday, November 15th, with news arriving too late to get in Monday's issue. Mr. Wentz was one of those quiet, hard working and talented souls who loved music and created 15 musical revues featuring several performers over the past many years - all of the celebrating American songwriters, some of the well known, some more obscure. One could tell his passion, not just to the songs, but to bringing these songs to the public in an entertaining and interesting manner. Along the way, he mentored and coached several performers without ever taking the spotlight away from their talents, which, because of his own inestimable telent, could easily have been done. Be sure to read the entier bio in the obituary on his website. Here truly was a man with a dream, who lived his dream - he will be sorely missed. It is unfortunate that we were only able to meet him personally less than two years ago, and found him to be a charming, though quiet, friend.
Lots of new things in the listings below, including the return of Mark Janas's SALON events, with the same day & time but in a new venue. The holiday shows are starting to appear in the listings, and my file of holiday items for next issue is bulging, including the return of Ruby Rims' TEDDYCARE shows. Read on.
Just when I thought I had covered all the cabaret news items for November, several more new items came in. Which means that some of the December items I intended to include will have to wait for next week Monday's issue. And then there will be no regular newsletter issue until Monday, November 30th - I am taking the USA Thanksgiving holiday off.
As noted above, there will be a very special "combined" Thanksgiving issue on Friday, the 27th - combining our twice-weekly newsletter with our MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter that goes out on Fridays, and the CABARET FOR SENIORS newsletter that goes out ever other Saturday. But it won't have the "listings section" per se (it will include a listing of all shows giving discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members and all the items where folks are running ads on the website. So if you have an event in November that does not fall under either category, be sure you get it to me by this Sunday.
Want to get in the Holiday spirit early? There is a great selection of Holiday-themed CDs - music to brighten your holidays - on the website at http://www.svhamstra.com/CDChristmas2009.shtml - click on a CD's cover to find a website where it may be purchased. Listing on this page is FREE - if your holiday CD is missing, there's a link on the page to apply. We won't be adding any more holiday CDs after December 1st.
This year we lined up a terrific cast for our CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS show, have 3 top-notch judges to pick the best CDs of 2009, and dropped our ticket price to the lowest level in our 20 year history ($15 cover - $10 for members, $5 for senior members). But so far, only about 20 folks have placed reservations (and 5 more, who can't be there, bought tickets for me to give away). I am truly mystified - especially since so many folks who supported us and purchased tickets to shows in the past haven't made reservations yet. We have a 3rd sponsor now so our basic costs are covered, so we will have the show in any case (it would be nice to have one more sponsor). But "the kids in the show" deserve a full house. For details, see the item at the top of this issue.

Reviews of cabaret shows & events seen will now be available on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ( http://www.svhamstra.com/ ) rather than in the newsletter. Reviews will also be repeated on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG. A TWITTER announcement ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ) will be published immediately plus one or two sentence comment will be placed in the next newsletter after posting.
As most of you know, I'm Dutch. My grandparents came from Holland (Friesland, to be exact) before the turn of the century, so naturally, I know only a few words in Dutch (and I assume most of them are swear words because my parents - who were born in the USA - only uttered them when angry). Like most northern Europeans, Dutch people (and especially Frisians) are loath to show emotions. No weeping and wailing at funerals, no bunny-hopping at weddings, etc. I am pretty typical Frisian/Dutch in that regard. Except.... at a cabaret show, and especially at a cabaret show where I am touched by creativity, excitement, tremendous vocals, inventive arrangements, and truly emotional lyrical interpretation. I cry at cabaret shows - at least some of them. Whether the song be a ballad or an "up-tune," if it is down fantastically well, I cry.
There are two shows that made me cry that I am writing reviews for right now - and they will be on the website in about 24 hours (I was hoping to complete them last night, but went to another show, and I never write after the required 2-drink minimum).
Marcus Simeone always makes me cry - tears if joy, excitement, admiration and sometimes even shock and awe at the way he sings. He has a show coming up this Sunday at 9:30 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (last chance to see him this year) - and you just might see me over on the side, in tears. No one does it better! (I also cry at shows by Baby Jane Dexter, Barb Jungr, Julie Reyburn, Tommy Femia, and a few others). Marcus both sings and speaks from the heart - my kind of cabaret. And his vocals are incredible - incredible! More on the website some time tomorrow.
I also found myself in tears at the performance of a brand new cabaret performer, Joshua Warr - who has some additional shows coming up in December and is appearing in my CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS PARTY on November 30th. Note I didn't merely say "singer" or "vocalist". This young man does it all - singing, dancing, acting - one of the most talented performers to take a cabaret stage I have ever seen (and I've been doing this for nearly 30 years - 20 of them writing about cabaret). And at this show you get a "trio of greats" - Tracy Stark as musical director and Miles Phillips as director. The show features some of the most creative arrangements ever presented in cabaret. More on the website some time tomorrow.
We will announce their posting on the website ( http://www.svhamstra.com/ ) on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ) and will also post the full reviews on the blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ )
ONE MORE REMINDER: There will be no issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER on Thursday, November 26th - a special "Thanksgiving" TRIPLE issue will be sent out instead on Friday the 27th, combining the regular issue with the MEMBERS ONLY and CABARET FOR SENIORS issues. Wishing all a Happy Holiday! Note that many cabaret rooms and piano bars may be closed on this day to permit their employees to attend traditional family gatherings. Be sure to phone ahead if planning to visit any venue.

With this issue we have covered all the appropriate events for which we have received press releases (as of yesterday) through December 6th, with the exception of one item that needs extensive rewriting and an item that will be our TOP STORY in the Monday issue. You can see all the events that have already appeared in previous newsletters on the website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section (click on the button at the top of every page so labeled). Look for more news on the blog (http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and in Monday's newsletter. (No regular issue on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday)
I have a lot more to tell you about - but no more room to tell it.
And that's just about the way it was. Until Monday then.
