Wishing all a Happy Holiday! Note that many cabaret rooms and piano bars may be closed on this day to permit their employees to attend traditional family gatherings. Be sure to phone ahead if planning to visit any venue.

HERE & THERE - PART I

My friend Daniel and I are off tonight for one of our favorite annual events: BROADWAY UNPLUGGED at THE TOWN HALL at 8:00 pm. This is the concert where Broadway stars sing Broadway songs "the old fashioned way" - without electronic amplification. Producer/writer/host Scott Siegel reports that some good seats are still available for tonight's show and I hope to see as many of my cabaret friends as possible tonight. The show is directed by cabaret favorite Scott Coulter, and of course another cabaret favorite, Ross Patterson, is musical director.

Want to get in the Holiday spirit early? There is a great selection of Holiday-themed CDs - music to brighten your holidays - on the website - click on a CD's cover to find a website where it may be purchased. Listing on this page is FREE - if your holiday CD is missing, there's a link on the page to apply.

I hate to be depressed - that's why I go to cabaret shows! But if you could see some of the letters and e-mails from cabaret performers and fans that I receive every day, you would see why sometimes even I get depressed. Folks who used to perform in and/or attend cabaret shows have reported on jobs lost (we have an effective unemployment rate of 17% in the USA, according to some), credit cards canceled or credit limits lowered, being forced to switch from full time to part time just to continue to have income, and more. Over 100 folks have not renewed their CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership this year, and I am certain that most have not done so because of finances. We have already "awarded" nearly 50 scholarship memberships, thanks to the generosity of those more fortunate and sent extra donations to fund them.

Banner advertising on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is at a new low - at this the most important cabaret season of the year! I am about to announce a "December Special" on banner ads - I have only a few banner orders on hand for next month and I need to drum up some business. Only the very inexpensive "sidebar" banners ($25/wk) are selling out right now. And this at a time where daily visits to the website are at an all-time high (some days as many as 10,000 hits, according to my stats) and we have more subscribers to our twice-weekly newsletter than ever in our history. And this week there are $50 in discounts for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members available!

Ticket sales to our CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS PARTY have been very slow as well - and that concerns me very much. Thanks to the support of our current two sponsors, I can put the show on no matter how few are in the audience, but that isn't fair to the performers who will be taking part. I hope that more of my good friends who have supported these events in the past will sign up for tickets this week to give us a full house.

Cover charge for our CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS is the lowest in the history of all our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE special events - $15 each for non-members, $10 each for 2009-2010 members and $5 each for members of CABARET FOR SENIORS. (this does not include the club's 2-drink minimum). If you can't make the show, why not donate the cost of one or two tickets? We will give them to some of the very many folks who are truly financially strapped this year. CLICK HERE TO ORDER TICKETS

We are looking for additional SPONSORS to help cover production and promotion costs. If you would like to be a sponsor (just $100) just go to our sponsor PayPal page

Sponsors and their website URLs will be listed in all promotional announcements for the show, including the opening page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, the twice-weekly newsletter, the MEMBERS ONLY newsletter, the new CABARET FOR SENIORS newsletter and also on the show.

Singer/pianist Sammy Goldstein has been cruising the seven seas for the past few years, and rarely gets to NYC, and even more rarely performs here. But he was home this past week, and while here he had an echocardiogram for the first time in seven years. (Sammy had open-heart surgery in 1994 for aortic valve replacement.) Bad news - it was discovered that he would need to have surgery immediately. Last night he went into the hospital for tests and will have open-heart surgery in the next few days to repair an "aortic root" which had dilated (swollen) to an unsafe level and could rupture in the very near future. Our thoughts and prayers are with this good friend -and I hope you will remember him in your thoughts and prayers as well. He will out of contact for a while, but we'll let you know further news when we get some.

FEINSTEIN'S has announced a new price structure. All headliner shows for the spring season will have a select amount of seats - based on availability - with a $40 cover charge and no food/beverage minimum. In addition, for the first three months of the season, all 10:30 pm late shows will have $40 cover charge. Tony and Emmy Award winner Tyne Daly will return to the club to open the official season from January 19th to 30th with her new show "The Second Time Around." Following the triumphant run last year of her show "Broadway By Request," Tony Award winner Betty Buckley will return to the club with a new program of Broadway songs she's always wanted to sing from February 2nd to 27th. She will be joined by longtime Music Director Kenny Werner and John McDaniel will serve as Music Consultant. Acclaimed singer Marilyn Maye will make her Feinstein's debut with a new show created exclusively for the club from March 2nd to 13th.

Looking for a one-stop shopping place to purchase a cabaret CD for Holiday giving? Its not too early to shop. Members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE have CDs for sale on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and we are adding more each week.

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! We have the date - now we need to choose the acts, get some sponsors and start selling tickets.

ADELE ZANE RELEASES THIRD CD - "A STRANGER IN TOWN"

Adele Zane's newest CD, "A Stranger in Town" is probably the perfect companion to your broken heart or to the heart you've just broken. For singer/songwriter Zane's third CD she has enlisted the aid of virtuoso guitarist Andrew Green as both collaborator and arranger. More than willing to blur the boundaries between jazz, rock, pop and country, the duo have succeeded in creating a highly polished and well thought out merger of the genres. Todd Isler on hadgini, Jorge Roeder on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums round out a stellar selection of backing musicians. Jim Clouse makes a special guest appearance on drums and Hamcrest Riverton hands in a memorable cameo on Zane's original, Girl at the Bar. The CD is available at CD BABY.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

Reviews of cabaret shows & events seen will now be available on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ( http://www.svhamstra.com/ ) rather than in the newsletter. Reviews will also be repeated on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG. A TWITTER announcement ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ) will be published immediately plus one or two sentence comment will be placed in the next newsletter after posting.

Several folks have asked how performers are chosen for our various CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE events.

There are several factors I consider when making choices. I prefer to choose current CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members, naturally. And I like to use a few folks who have never appeared in one of my shows in the past. I always try to include one or two newcomers. In addition, I look kindly on folks who have supported CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE with sponsorship of past events, ads & banners on the website and continuous membership. And I like to include folks who have a show coming up or a recent CD release. Folks with an established following are also chosen - the purpose is to build as large an audience as possible. Finally, there is my "impulse" choice - I see a show, and immediately say to myself "I want that person in my next event" and sometimes sake them "on the spot".

We put on 3 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE events a year - the big July Birthday Show (I have already asked some very special performers to be in our 20th ANNIVERSARY show in 2010 if they can make it); our CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS show - the one we're working on right now; and the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA - set in 2010 for Tuesday, March 2nd, where we try to include some top national & international cabaret stars for that one. (Tom Stajmiger will be picking the cast for that show - with a little input from me).

I hope that explains it all - we need about 60 performers each year to cast all three shows. Who knows, you may be in one of our next ones?

ONE MORE REMINDER: There will be no issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER - a special "Thanksgiving" DOUBLE issue will be sent out instead on Friday, combining the regular issue with the MEMBERS ONLY issue. Wishing all a Happy Holiday! Note that many cabaret rooms and piano bars may be closed on this day to permit their employees to attend traditional family gatherings. Be sure to phone ahead if planning to visit any venue.
