SAD NEWS: ART D'LUGOFF (1924-2009)

Moments before we sent out this issue we received word from Jamie deRoy that Art D'Lugoff, owner of The Village Gate passed away last night. THE VILLAGE GATE was a nightclub at the corner of Thompson and Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, New York. Art opened the club in 1958, on the ground floor and basement of 158 Bleecker Street. The large 1896 Chicago School structure by architect Ernest Flagg was known at the time as Mills House No. 1 and served as a flophouse for transient men. Throughout its 36 years the Village Gate featured such musicians as John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, Vasant Rai, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, who made her first New York appearance there. The show Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, debuted at the Village Gate in 1968. (taken from Wikipedia). More details on Monday and/or on the website as received.

HERE & THERE - PART I

I have to start off with an apology (not really good form, from what I've been taught). This is my "Marilyn Taylor" story.

I don't have a proof reader - I don't need one, because I have a pal named Daniel who e-mails immediately when he spots an error. We're not talking about spelling errors, we mean factual errors, inconsistencies and blunders. In my review on Monday of Maureen Taylors delightful "Taylor Made" show, I referred to her as Marilyn. Of course I was "called on it" by Daniel almost immediately. He has reminded me twice since, and even this morning at 6:00 am he texted my with the words "DONT FORGET MAUREEN". By Tuesday I had already corrected all the errors on the website issue. So, here is my apology - and an explanation (but not really an excuse).

When I was a mere lad, centuries ago, one of my older sisters (I forget which of the two) had a very good friend by the name of Marilyn Taylor. She was very pretty (at least to my young eyes) and (as most young boys do) I had a "crush" on her. Thus the Freudian slip. I have even called Maureen "Marilyn" in introducing her at one of my cabaret events!

Now, between you and I, my impression is that my pal Daniel has a little "crush" on Maureen Taylor - he said "I like that lady, she's a lot of fun" twice after her show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. Perhaps he will be doomed to call every gal named "Marilyn" as "Maureen" from now on.

The MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) Board has elected its new officers for the new year:

LENNIE WATTS, President
HECTOR CORIS, Vice-President
SUE MATSUKI, Treasurer
JULIE REYBURN, Secretary

Jan Grossberg was elected to the Advisory Board and Ricky Ritzel is now the MAC Archivist.

Speaking of MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets), this year the organization changed it's membership year to start on January 1st instead of September 1st, giving all members a free extension of 3 months on their current memberships. However, this has led to a "cash crunch". So, to help them catch up and raise some immediate funds, they are having a FUND RAISER BAZAAR at DON'T TELL MAMA this Sunday, November 8th, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, with all sorts of fun, entertainment, auctions, raffles and sales of cabaret memorabilia and CDs. All the details are in the TOP STORY section above. And new MAC memberships will be available at the event as well - you can get an early 1 1/2 months free on your 2010 membership by joining this weekend.

Tickets for our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS show, to be held at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ) on Monday, November 30th, 2009 at 7:00 pm are on sale now via the website. The show will feature Jim Speake as MC, with Tracy Stark as musical director. In tomorrow's MEMBERS ONLY newsletter we will begin announcing performers - we have already announced our "opening act", Cynthia Crane - who is actually presenting her own show along with Paul Greenwood, in the cabaret room next to ours at DON'T TELL MAMA at 7:30 pm. She will be giving us a "sample" of her show, then scurry next door for her's. Tickets for the event are at our lowest price ever: $15 for non-members, $10 for members and $5 for SENIOR members.

At the show we will announce the winners of our BEST CD OF 2009 - you can see all the CDs entered on the website at http://www.svhamstra.com/CDContest2009.shtml

Meantime, we are looking for SPONSORS for the event to cover production and promotion costs. This will allow us to have all our anticipated expenses (room charges, fliers, etc.) covered before the show, so we can charge the lowest possible cover charge and even be relieved of the pressure of selling every possible seat in order to keep from losing money (if you are a performer, you know the feeling). If you would like to be a sponsor ($100 - and you get one free ticket to the show) just go to the website and click on any one of the side-bar banners promoting the show - there is a link to our sponsor PayPal page. Sponsors and their website URLs will be listed in all promotional announcements for the show, including the opening page of the website, the twice-weekly newsletter, the MEMBERS ONLY newsletter, the new CABARET FOR SENIORS newsletter and also on the program for the show. You may purchase more than one sponsorship. Any questions? Drop me a line.

Congratulations to singer/songwriter Michael Holland and everyone involved with his new musical "HURRICANE" that was featured in the NY Musical Theater Festival (NYMF) this year (and sold out every performance). The festival presents a small group of juried Awards for Excellence, and his production has been honored with 3 of them: Outstanding Overall Production Design; Excellence In Direction, Michael Bush; Honorable Mention - Excellence In Writing/Score - Michael Holland. Many performers on the cabaret scene have been singing Michael's beautiful music for quite a while, as well as coming to the Karen Mack/Michael Holland cabaret gigs - their HOLE-O-MATIC shows resume at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - ) this Saturday, November 7th at 7:30 pm.

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! We have the date - now we need to choose the acts, get some sponsors and start selling tickets.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE used to have a NYC BULLETIN SERVICE that would send special short news items to folks who signed up about local show cancellations, urgent news, etc. We discontinued that service when we signed up for a TWITTER account - hoping that followers of cabaret would join and become part of my "friends" list. That we I could send out info in seconds - even from my iPod touch or cell phone. But very few folks have done so. There are about 185 signed on, but we used to have 300 on our BULLETIN SERVICE (which requires me to be at my desk computer, etc. Here's one more reminder:

ADELE ZANE RELEASES THIRD CD - "A STRANGER IN TOWN"

Adele Zane's newest CD, "A Stranger in Town" is probably the perfect companion to your broken heart or to the heart you've just broken. For singer/songwriter Zane's third CD she has enlisted the aid of virtuoso guitarist Andrew Green as both collaborator and arranger. More than willing to blur the boundaries between jazz, rock, pop and country, the duo have succeeded in creating a highly polished and well thought out merger of the genres. A Stranger in Town expresses it's own distinctive perspective on heartbreak, emancipation, shattered illusions and hopefulness in its refreshing re-imaginings of well-known and forgotten gems. Zane is ably assisted by Green on guitar and electric bass and is given the space to show off her multi-octave range and emotional depth. Todd Isler on hadgini, Jorge Roeder on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums round out a stellar selection of backing musicians. Jim Clouse makes a special guest appearance on drums and Hamcrest Riverton hands in a memorable cameo on Zane's original, Girl at the Bar. The CD is available at CDBaby!

FRIDAY - NOVEMBER 20th

NYC: MAGGIE MALONE AT MAMA'S WITH MOONSTRUCK

Jazz-Pop singer Maggie Malone returns to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ) on Friday, November 20th and Tuesday, December 1st, both shows at 7:30 pm in her show "MOONSTRUCK, Tunes of Lunar Magic and Mischief". Maggie's new show is a tribute to two moons: the friendly prairie moon she knew as a child in South Dakota, oh so many moons ago, and the elegant urban orb, set in the glittering skyscape of Manhattan, that she knows and loves now. Some songs directly address the moon and others were chosen for an intriguing image of it tucked into the lyric. In "Moonstruck," she'll be accompanied by an amazing jazz trio: Lou Rainone, musical director and piano, Paul Beaudry, bass and Dave Jeffrey, drums. Songs will include music by composers ranging from 'Duke' Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael and Jimmy Van Heusen to Van Morrison. There is a $10 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

I still will owe you reviews on the following shows: Marcus Simeone's show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on October 21st; Chicago favorites Becky Menzie & Tom Michael's "Better Two-Gether" show, also seen at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on October 19th; Rob Langeder's show at DON'T TELL MAMA on the 27th of October. Last night I was back at DON'T TELL MAMA for Nicole Kafka's "Vamps, Vixens & Villains" show.

Here's the problem: the more shows I see, the harder it is to keep up with reviews. The fewer shows I see, the more irritable I get (just ask my roommate or the cat with no name who allows us to live here).

Marcus Simeone has his next show on November 22nd, and Nicole Kafka on the 13th. I promise a review on each on Monday. The Menzie/Michaels and Langeder shows were sort of "one shot" events, so I shall fit them in when I have space and time. Tonight I plan to see Leslie Orofino at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN, and maybe a second show. And I am contemplating moving all the future reviews to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG with a one or two sentence synopsis in the newsletter with a link. Decision not yet made.

No apology to Craig Coursey today. He always delays his lunch hour on Mondays & Thursdays until the newsletter arrives. We're actually more than a full hour early in sending this one out! (with just 500 words over our 10,000 word goal).

This issue contains cabaret listings sent in directly to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE by performers or their publicists, and includes all items received to date covering show in October. Look for more news on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG and in Monday's newsletter. See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Join as a member! Sign up on TWITTER!! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support.

I have a lot more to tell you about - but no more time to tell it.

And that's just about the way it was. Until Monday then.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
