TODAY'S TOP STORY
NYC: 6TH ANNUAL BROADWAY UNPLUGGED ANNOUNCES PERFORMERS
Marc Kudisch, Emily Skinner, Daniel Reichard, William Michals, Sarah Jane McMahon, Bill Daugherty, Manu Narayan, and Lisa Howard will be among the more than fifteen Broadway stars that will be performing this year in the 6th Annual Broadway Unplugged Concert at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - ) on Monday, November 16th at 8:00 pm. The concert's musical director, for the sixth consecutive year, will be Ross Patterson. Taking the helm as director will be Scott Coulter. This is the concert where today's Broadway stars show they've got the same kind of chops as the old timers did - without electronic amplification.
Scott Siegel, the creator/writer/host of Broadway Unplugged announced that, despite the treacherous economy, he is going ahead with a concert that has, over its short lifetime, become a musical theater tradition every Fall. As always, it promises to be a great show, with big stars, wonderful show tunes, and absolutely no microphones. Only a modest number of stars have been announced now, with more announced as the November 16th date approaches.
Tickets are $75 for the orchestra, $50 for the front balcony, and $25 for the rear balcony. Tickets may be purchased via TicketMaster at 212-307-4100 or at TicketMaster.com, as well as the Town Hall Box Office between noon and 6:00 pm every day but Sunday.
Broadway Unplugged is sponsored, in part, by Edith & Ervin Drake, Peter & Barbara Leavy, Jill & Irwin Cohen, TheaterMania.com, Trattoria Dopo Teatro, The Edythe Kenner Foundation, Thoroughbred Records, Steven Ernst, Stuart Bloom & Robert Aaron: Lightstyles, LLC.
HERE & THERE - PART I
We added some new pages to the website over the weekend - including a special page showing the CD covers for all the entries to date for our BEST CD OF 2009 contest - I have a few more to add later today. There is also a page listing HOLIDAY THEMED CDs for sale - several new CDs were added and we did some rearranging of the ones already there.
And we continued our work on the CD SALE page on the website - every 2009-2010 member has a page to display their CD, plus a link where it may be purchased. I have several more to add here as well. I hope many of you will include a cabaret CD or two in your Holiday Gift purchases. They make excellent stocking stuffers, they are easy to wrap, and easy to mail. And CDs can be appreciated year-round, unlike a box of chocolates or a bouquet of flowers. (A fruit cake, on the other hand, can be used for year - save it and give it to someone else next year). Just click on the button marked CABARET CDs in the bunch of buttons at the top of every page.
We hit 347 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2009-2010 on Saturday, just missing our 350 goal by October 31st by 3! You can join instantly for as little as $20 - just click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page. Members get (in addition to their own CD page note above) discounts on various cabaret events, discounts or rebates on ads on our website, a link to their personal website or blog, MySpace and Twitter accounts, a link to a YouTube video , plus a chance to nominate & vote in our MEMBERS' CHOICE events. Plus, members get a special MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter on Fridays.
Tickets for our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS show, to be held at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ) on Monday, November 30th, 2009 at 7:00 pm will go on sale today via the website. Tickets for the event will be at our lowest price ever: $15 for non-members, $10 for members and $5 for SENIOR members.
Meantime, we are looking for SPONSORS for the event to cover production and promotion costs. This will allow us to have all our anticipated expenses (room charges, fliers, etc.) covered before the show, so we can charge the lowest possible cover charge and even be relieved of the pressure of selling every possible seat in order to keep from losing money (if you are a performer, you know the feeling). If you would like to be a sponsor ($100 - and you get one free ticket to the show) just go to the website and click on any one of the side-bar banners promoting the show - there is a link to our sponsor PayPal page. Sponsors and their website URLs will be listed in all promotional announcements for the show, including the opening page of the website, the twice-weekly newsletter, the MEMBERS ONLY newsletter, the new CABARET FOR SENIORS newsletter and also on the program for the show. You may purchase more than one sponsorship. Any questions? Drop me a line.
Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! We have the date - now we need to choose the acts, get some sponsors and start selling tickets.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
I still will owe you reviews on the following shows: Marcus Simeone's show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on October 21st; Chicago favorites Becky Menzie & Tom Michael's "Better Two-Gether" show, also seen at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on October 19th; Maureen Taylor's tribute to the music of Bob Merrill at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 7:00 pm and "PINOCCHIO OF CHELSEA" at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN at 9:30 pm, both on Monday the 26th; Karen Oberlin's new show - at 7:30 pm on the 28th at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM; Rob Langeder's show at DON'T TELL MAMA on the 27th of October. I see I have a very daunting assignment ahead of me.
Ms. Oberlin's brand-new show "BIRDS DO IT: Songs of the Natural World" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on October 19th was a delightful romp through songs of nature and love. It was totally entertaining - made more so by fantastic vocals and the amazing arrangements by musical director Tedd Firth. As Karen says in the show, sometimes the show's theme helps choose the songs, and sometimes the songs create the theme. In building her song list from her many favorites, her theme gradually developed. With Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" as the centerpiece of the show, and suggesting the show's title, Ms. Oberlin's songs covered glow worms, nightingales flowers, the wind, and other aspects of nature (and love) that often serve as topics for any songwriter's creations. Her fresh approach to many of the fine standards, plus her sparkling attitude and joyful personality made the show a joyful cabaret event. A few of the numbers were "list songs" - "Rhode Island is Famous for You", "The Waters of March" "Lets Do It"- the type of songs that strike fear into the hearts of many performers. Ms. Oberlin handed them with aplomb. Her many anecdotes and asides on nature were cleverly chosen and helped keep the show light and entertaining. Highlights were two lovely ballad numbers: Strayhorn's "A Flower is a Lonesome Thing" and a incredibly original medley of "Shadow of Your Smile" (Mandel/Webster) and "I Remember" (Sondheim).
Ms. Oberlin has two more performances of "Birds Do It" at the METROPOLITAN ROOM on Thursdays, November 5th & 12th, both shows at 7:30 pm.
Another delightful show, also presented at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, was Maureen Taylor's "TAYLOR MADE: The Songs of Bob Merril" which I attended on October 26th. As Ms. Taylor points out at the start of the show, the name "Bob Merril" does not have a familiar ring to many, but if you list his creations, you will recognize some of the most famous and popular songs in the American songbook. Just say "Mambo Italiano", "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?", "Music That Makes Me Dance" and eyes light up with recognition. Put Mr. Merril's songs in the hands of Maureen Taylor, and they come alive in a new and refreshing way. Many of the songs appeared in films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Funny Girl, Take Me Along - and/or sung by folks like Rosemary Clooney, Sarah Vaughn, Patti Page, Doris Day and more. With impeccable vocals that clearly brought out every lyric, Ms. Taylor, with musical direction by Matt Castle, and accompanied by Joe Brent on guitar and mandolin (and probably some more instruments I couldn't see), the show breezed its way through 22 songs with alacrity and charm.
One small quibble - and by no means a cabaret axiom, but more my personal preference - was the use of so many props in the show. This so often becomes a source of confusion and distraction to both audience and performer (especially if a prop is misplaced or forgotten at home). Except for the occasional "special material" number, in my opinion props are an unnecessary burden. Learning the lyrics of 20+ songs and interludes of patter is difficult enough, without also having to keep track of a piano cover loaded with gimmicks and brick-a-brack.
Maureen Taylor's TAYLOR MADE show has two more performances scheduled for Sunday, November 8th at 4:00 pm and Monday, November 9th at 7:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM.
