TODAY'S TOP STORY
NOMINATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR MEMBERS' CHOICE PERFORMERS OF THE YEAR 2008
Its time for another MEMBERS' CHOICE POLL, and this time we are inviting all 2008-2009 members to nominate their choices for the best performances/performers during the past year - from December 1, 2007 through November 30th, 2008. This is an INTERNATIONAL poll - not limited to the USA - not limited to the NYC club scene. The only rules are that the performance/performer be nominated by a current member and the nominating member must have attended the show of the performer nominated. The performer nominated does not need to be a 2008-2009 member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but, of course, that would be nice).
There are only 5 categories - Female & Male Vocalist, Female & Male Debut, and Musical and/or Comedy Duo or Group. These categories may be sub-divided if we receive a large number of nominees in a certain category (i.e. Female/Male Jazz, Female/Male Major, etc.)
There is a link to the Nominations Rules page on the home (index) page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, and nominations need to be entered on the nominations form to be admissible. Nominations will be accepted until midnight, December 31st - the balloting will take place in January - the winners announced in February. REMEMBER: You must be a member to nominate and vote in this poll.
The MALE & FEMALE DEBUT winners will be invited to perform at our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH show on March 10th at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER. (http://www.MarchIsCabaretMonth.com )
ALL WINNERS WILL RECEIVE A FREE 2-WEEK RUN OF A SUPERSIZE BANNER ON THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE WEBSITE - banner must run before December 1, 2009.
More details on the website.
SPECIAL NOTE TO SUBSCRIBERS
Since both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursdays this year, there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters on those dates - we will be publishing special "double issues" on Mondays, December 22nd & 29th. We plan to send out a special end-of-year report to all members on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on or about December 31st.
HERE & THERE - PART I
I can't believe this crazy weather we are having here in NYC - frigid temperatures one day, balmy temperatures the next. A few days ago it was 23 degrees (f) when I awoke at 6:00 am - this morning it was 48! And already at 9:00 am it was at 53! Clear and sunny as well - a great day for sightseeing - I might just take the time to go out and about this afternoon to check on the holiday windows at MACY'S.
Sad news from the owners of HOLLYWOOD SHEET MUSIC (7777 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA - 323-850-1075 - http://www.hollywoodsheetmusic.com ). In spite of tremendous support from performers and friends in the Los Angeles area, including a special Master Class/Fund Raiser put on by CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/ ) and led by Sharon McNight back in October, the store has been forced to close. The owners pledge to do their best to reopen at another location if possible. Stay tuned.
This will be a shorter-than-lately newsletter today. In my rush to try to include all the holiday and New Year's Eve news items over the past few weeks, I ended up using up all my news through the end of 2008! And still have 16 days before the end of the year. There are a few late items in today's issue for both holiday sections - all the news reported to date can be found on the website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section and in the two special HOLIDAY and NEW YEAR'S EVE pages. IF your item isn't there, send your press release in to me pronto - via e-mail and include a recent headshot (jpg) if you can.
SPECIAL NOTE: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE - If you wish an item published in the newsletter and on the website, or written about in the blog, just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your cabaret related event. Send photos in jpg or gif format as attachments if available. Be sure to send the names of your musical director and director, and the names of others in your show. Include the name of the show, the date and time of event, and the venue name, address and reservation phone number - and cover/minimum information. Also send the website address of the venue if available. Please send complete information - and please do not merely e-mail a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
Here's another take on the recent discussions we have had here in the newsletter and on the blog regarding the state of cabaret, sent in by a subscriber:
"I thought it was interesting your comments about emails you have been getting as to why cabaret has been struggling. One of the things I find so interesting is why people need to find blame as to why they are not successful. I go and see many cabaret acts and am so disappointed in what I see and it is so expensive. I see a lot of "Performing" and not a whole lot of real emotional connection with us, the audience. When I see people really trying to learn to connect, it makes me want to cheer them on. I appreciate the Julie Wilsons, Marilyn Mayes, Barbara Cooks, Lee Roy Reams and others of that ilk because they really connect and communicate to the audience, so much more than just ego. I want to be deeply moved and laugh hard."
Another reader commented on the quality of service and (for some venues) the quality of ambiance - likening one club's facilities to a school lunch room. Ambiance is a tough call, since most club owners are trying to keep their costs down, but good service should be a given - it doesn't cost a penny more. My own experience lately has been the seemingly high turnover of staff in many of the clubs. Hopefully, since most cabaret staff members are also performers, this means that the waiters and bartenders have gotten gigs in musicals, on cruise ships and in touring companies of Broadway shows. But I have noticed drinks are now often being served during serious moments in the show, where the waiters used to "wait" until the ballad was over - and then drop off drinks during the applause. This could be a lack of training, or it could be thoughtlessness.
And then there is the "disappearing waiter" act, usually about 3/4 into the show, where the staff disappears - sometimes to tally all the bills for the show, sometimes just to chat or have a smoke. Heaven help anyone who tips over a drink with no staff person around to come to the rescue with a towel or some napkins. I personally think - simply for safety sake - one staff member other than the lighting techie should be in the cabaret room during the show at all times. A few weeks ago I was at a show that ended and no one was around to bring the bills. Fortunately thanks to the honesty of the cabaret audience, no one left without paying. Even worse is the habit in some rooms to hand out the bills during the last song, and then attempting to collect payment before the show has even ended. Perhaps we could call Maggie Cullen out of retirement to open a school for cabaret wait staff!
SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN: The Second Annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - MARCH IS CABARET MONTH CELEBRATION. Check out http://www.MarchIsCabaretMonth.com for regular updates.
If you subscribe to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter and have not yet become a member, isn't it time? A basic SILVER membership is still just $20. Joining is simple - just click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page of the website. You can even join and donate instantly using a credit card, debit card or e-check via PayPal - all the benefits are shown on that page, as well as the various levels of membership. Or you can donate the old fashioned way, by paper check - just remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.
We are 70 members short of the number of members we had at this point last year - 440 - which is about 16%. At the same time our Banner Ad income is down $5,000 from last year at this time - and over $1,500 in ad sales have yet to be paid for - meaning a shortfall in income from 2007 of nearly $10,000! And this does not take into account the loss of income from my outside work - website design and maintenance. Income in that category has dropped by close to $2,000 to date in 2008 as well with the loss of two major accounts.
I just looked this all up - and even shocked myself with these figures. I knew things were bad, but didn't realize how bad until this morning! As Orwell said in 1984 (the book, not the year) "Ignorance Is Bliss" and I was in a false state of bliss for the past few months! Now I realize why I have had to cancel my cabaret-going plans so often lately for lack of funds!
We're not "crying wolf" when we say that our financial situation is critical. If it wasn't for some extraordinary gifts (non membership, non advertising) and some loans from friends and relatives, and even two wonderful folks who paid for banners far in advance, this whole operation would have collapsed back in August. 166 members out of 478 (nearly 35%) from 2007-2008 have not re-joined. Please - if you are not yet a member, consider joining before the end of 2008.
Lest you get the impression that interest in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - and therefor cabaret - has lessened, visits to our website have increased about 5% and we have now surpassed 2,700 subscribers - nearly a 5% increase in subscribers over last year! Plus our CABARETSINGS.COM website is constantly growing in visitors and the new CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG, which just was created less than a month ago, is already gaining in popularity. The interest in cabaret is out there - it is the funding that has dropped drastically.
Once again, since both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursdays this year, there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters on those dates - we will be publishing special "double issues" on Mondays, December 22nd & 29th. We plan to send out a special end-of-year report to all members on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on or about December 31st.
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
REGARDING NEWS ITEMS IN THIS NEWSLETTER
To keep the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters as short as possible, while including as many news items as possible, we only include an item in the newsletter once - unless the event is one that has an ad running on the website, weekly events that feature special guests, cabaret related benefits, cabaret organization events and cabaret "festivals." All items mentioned in the newsletter are added to the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages of the website, and the headline of each item in the DIARY/DATEBOOK will be included in the newsletter going forward for seven days. That way, if you see the headline in the newsletter, you can go to the website for further details. Any event offering a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be included in every Thursday issue. REMEMBER: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE.
MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
The holidays are upon us in full force! And fortunately the holidays bring with them some terrific cabaret shows. Some of the annual holiday shows of the past have dropped away, but new traditions take their place, one of which is SUE & EDD'S FABULOUS CHRISTMAS which took place on Wednesday, December 10th at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. I am not alone in being enamored by the fantastic vocals of Sue Matsuki and Edd Clark. Alone or in duet their voices are clear and beautiful. And this show, now in its 3rd year, was so great I asked Sue & Edd to MC the recent CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE "CDs for the Holidays" show at DON'T TELL MAMA. The show of the inaugural year was recorded for a CD which was made available after Wednesday's performance, but I have had my copy since the first year, and at this time of the year it is loaded on my iPod Shuffle and serves as a soundtrack to my life in December.
In addition to great vocals, and a song list of both old and new favorites, this show was blessed with a new song, written by Ms. Matsuki and the show's musical director, Paul Stephan, called "No More Sugar for Christmas." Edd's delivery of "The Gift of the Maggie" has become classic, and once again Sue dismembered her "pretty little dolly." There were fun songs, serious songs, and lots of funny bits between songs - this duo has enough chemistry to win them a spot in the Gilbert Hall of Science!
This was a one-night-only event, but we did hear that it was repeated at a midtown church over the weekend. If we hear of another performance this year I will be sure to let you know.
Another duo with amazing chemistry is the musical comedy pair Booth & Pat and their hilariously funny show "Slow Children Playing." I was at their show at THE DUPLEX on Friday, December 5th at 7:00 pm. Take one part Mack & Holland, one part Smothers Brothers and one part Nichols & May and you have Booth (Daniels) & Pat (Frankfort). Satire and parody is their forte with improv, medley madness and social commentary thrown in. As I said to one of the folks at the show, in another era, a talent scout for Ed Sullivan or Jack Paar would be in the room, rushing to sign this duo up for a shot on national TV (with a TV series of their own to soon follow).
Their quick wit and split-second timing is astonishing - even when they mess up a song or a joke they make it into a comedy gem. Convoluted lyrics, intentional non-rhyming rhymes and a talent for grasping and revealing the funny in the serious, all go together to make their show total entertainment. They get bawdy without offending, and make fun of situations that others shy away from, including the farce of jazz scatting, condoms and Santa roasting on an open fire.
This popular duo oft times seems to get last minute bookings that don't appear on a club's monthly schedule until after the month starts - so I really can't tell you right now where they will pop up next, but I will let you know as soon as I know.
The home-page side-bar ad sale (4-weeks for price of 3) in November & December was such a success we have decided to continue the deal through the month of January. Spots are sold on a first-ordered-and-paid basis. $100 worth of ads for $75 - must use PayPal - no discounts or rebates. Side-bars appear on over 50 of the most visited pages on the website.
And the special discounts/rebates for December and January for 2008-2009 members on supersize banners continues as well. Now more than ever, you need to advertise - whether in print or on the web. The last place you want to cut back on is promoting your show or CD - unseen, unread, is unsold. Banner are displayed at random on over 6000 pages on the website.
SPECIAL NOTE TO MEMBERS - we have received just 18 sets of nominations for our MEMBERS' CHOICE BEST OF 2009 poll. And several of them are duplications of folks already nominated. Please make your nomination choices as soon as possible - final voting will take place on January 2nd. I will be listing the nominees so far in the next few days. Remember, it is not a "sin" to nominate yourself.
I hope you at least scanned the news and listings items in this issue - there are a lot of great shows listed with a lot of great performers and a lot of great songs and show themes. Is your event listed? Send me that press release! REMEMBER: A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE.

My own annual electronic Christmas card is up on the website - I have used the same artwork for as long as the website has been operating, and will send out a special Holiday Greeting Card via e-mail to all members around the 20th or so. And now we added a page where we can post the electronic cards we receive that we find particularly interesting (and sometimes cute). There's a link on the home page for each item.
And that is just about the way it was, in less than 10,000 words - far below my personal 15,000 word limit. More stuff appears on the blog - I added some items already this morning. Please make use of the blog - add a comment of your own when you feel the spirit. Just clock on the little word COMMENT at the bottom of each item on the blog - or open the item by clicking on the title line, and a box will appear for your entry.
One more time: since both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursdays this year, there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters on those dates - we will be publishing special "double issues" on Mondays, December 22nd & 29th. We plan to send out a special end-of-year report to all members on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on or about December 31st.
Support cabaret and live entertainment - see a show or two this week! Now more than ever, cabaret needs your support.
Until Thursday, then.
