HERE & THERE
In just a few minutes I will head for LaGuardia Airport to fly to St. Louis, MO, to attend the opening of a new cabaret venue - "Casual Cabaret" - which will make its premier at the new KRANZBERG ART CENTER STUDIO THEATRE (501 North Grand Street, St. Louis, MO - 314-795-8778) on Saturday, August 30th. There will be a "meet & greet" after the Saturday night show and I hope to have a chance to chat with many of the folks in the area who subscribe to the newsletter. There will be a 90-minute "mini-seminar" on cabaret on Saturday, August 30th at 11:00 am at the same venue - a time for me to meet you - and share together some thoughts, experiences, questions and even complaints about the art of cabaret. Cost will be just $10 - and what we discuss just might save you hundreds of dollars you might waste at "maxi-seminars" elsewhere. For just $10 more, attendees will be able to purchase a SILVER 2008-2009 membership for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (a $20 value). I will be taking along a few CDs to give away as well in connection with our new MEMBERS' CHOICE poll. Call 314-795-8778 if you are interested. Don't wait until the last minute.
I had a truly disappointing experience last night that I have been forced to share with you all today. I had arranged just about everything for my trip of this afternoon, and needed only one more thing to ease my mind for the journey. As I have stated again and again, over the summer months of June, July & August, our financial situation is always tight, but thanks to the generous folks who supported us by joining as members, we are nearly through to September - already new banner orders are coming in for the fall. There was only one obstacle left, and I thought I had it covered: my rent for September. I was expecting to collect a long-overdue payment last night of over $600 - part of which is over 60 days past due. I would have been able to deposit the check today, and by Monday it would have cleared the bank and all would be well.
Unfortunately, this was not to be - instead of a check I got a promise, and now I have to set aside funds that I planned on using as "backup" this weekend to make sure the rent gets paid on Monday. The kind folks in St. Louis have purchased my airplane tickets, are paying for my hotel room, and even sent me some cash for incidental expenses. But as it stands, when I return I will still be short of my rent payment (and who knows if the "promise" for a check next week will be kept?).
What I need today is for at least 4 people to join as $75 GOLD members or 15 people to sign on as $20 SILVER members to raise a backup of $300 to cover me - by PayPal if at all possible. Or I need some folks to PayPal me a total of $300 in advance on a future banner cost. It is that simple. I am so accustomed to trusting the word of folks in the cabaret community, this incident has really been a shock and true disappointment - something like this has been truly rare in the nearly 20 years I have been writing about cabaret.
I guess I can't really complain too much - there are many folks out there with far more problems than mine, especially fellow cabaret reviewer, writer and friend Rob Lester. There is something just a little suspicious about this story - Rob has had the same apartment for many years, protected by a thing here in NYC called "Rent Stabilization" - rent increases are set each year by a "board". Recently Rob's building went co-op, and he and the folks in the apartment upstairs (who actually were covered under "Rent Control" (New Yorkers will understand what this means) were the only two "holdouts" - all the other apartments are part of the co-op. So what happens? A fire breaks out in the apartment above Rob, actually killing the two occupants, and the ensuing damage from the fire and the water used to put out the fire had made Rob's apartment a ruin - countless books, CDs, financial records, his computer, etc. destroyed or damaged beyond repair. And it will be months or more before the apartment can be occupied again. Rob needs a lawyer - but he also needs funds to carry on, and a place to live. If you would like to help out, please send a donation - make checks payable to Rob Lester and mail c/o Sandi Durell, 145 West 67th Street - Apt. 23G, New York, NY 10023.
Remember that great cabaret song that tore down the house the first time your heard it or performed it? Remember that song that you felt was written just for you? We're trying to find the top three favorite contemporary cabaret songs in our new CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Members' Choice poll. Already more than a dozen songs have been nominated - but there are at least another dozen or two more that fit this description. Nominations and voting may only be made by 2007-2008 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - a good reason, if you have not done so, for you to join today. Because of the Kansas City trip, I am extending the nominations until Wednesday, September 3rd, since I will not be able to update the website with new nominees over the weekend. All the nominees will also be announced in next week Thursday's newsletter.
Just click on the NOMINEE'S TO DATE link (http://www.svhamstra.com/MembersChoiceSongPrelim08.shtml ) to see the nominations made so far. All members will be sent a ballot by e-mail after September 3rd to make the final choices - we will pick the top three. Remember, you can only nominate one song so choose carefully. Our MEMBERS' CHOICE polls are one more way CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE promotes the art and the artists (and the songs) of cabaret. I hope you can join with us by supporting the website (6000 visitors a day) and the newsletter (sent to 2600+ subscribers twice a week).
The message board on the website remains closed - with the preparations for the St. Louis trip, plus a bunch of other projects that all hit at once these past few days, I didn't have time to fix it I think I will probably have to seek a new message board setup to replace the current one, which has become far too easy to hack, since no password is required and it is open to all. Stay tuned.
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 2008-2009 member number 296 (Tara Levy - Jersey City, NJ) signed up yesterday. We're well on our way to our record breaking goal of 500 members for the year by April 1, 2009 (after May 1st all new memberships are for the 2009-2010 year). The record is currently 478 set last membership year. I have free CDs set aside for member #299 & #300 - only 3 members more needed. A basic SILVER membership is still just $20. Joining is simple - just click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page of the website. You can even join and donate instantly using a credit card, debit card or e-check via PayPal - all the benefits are shown on that page, as well as the various levels of membership. Or you can donate the old fashioned way, by paper check - just remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372.
Another reminder: There will be no issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter on LABOR DAY, Monday, September 1st.
The "coffee saga" continues. Here's my situation: I arise every morning at 6:30 or 7:00 am, make a pot of coffee and get to work. But, as mentioned in the past two issues, I purchased decaffeinated coffee beans in error and now I am not my usual bright and alert self in the AM. My work space it about 2 feet from my bed. After about a half hour of working at the computer, I get sleepy. The result? Everything is taking me twice as long to complete. Instead of the usual 6-hour burst of energy that carries me to noon and then nap, I end up doing the nap thing about every hour - and these are not restful naps. I conscience keeps telling me to get back to work, while my body cries out "nap time."
I am told that there is a mini coffee maker in my hotel room in St. Louis. I am going to request double the usual ration of real coffee packets while I am there. I have to regain my sharpness and edge. I shall return a new person - and purchase a pound of real coffee and make real coffee Monday morning, not this bland, flavored water I am drinking today!
Don't forget, PIANO BAR/OPEN MIC listings for seven days a week are now found on the website rather than being included each week in the newsletter (exceptions are open-mic events featuring special guests and/or running an ad on the website). See http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretPianoBars.shtml
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
I have a lot of packing to do, I have to do some last minute updates on the website, and I have to get to the airport so I will close early today. Coming in the next issue: The First Ever Cabaret Hotline Online SONGWRITER CHALLENGE. Something I thought up while riding on the subway back from Queens around 1:00 am. I think this will be a really interesting project - especially for songwriters.
Also coming next issue: a report on the St. Louis trip; review of a show I saw last night - Vickie and Nickie - at DON'T TELL MAMA; the return of old friend Jonathan Long to cabaret (he just sent me his new CD and I am loading it on my iPod as I write to listen to on the plane); the nominees for the 2008-2009 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERS' CHOICE Favorite Cabaret Song (deadline for nominations has been extended to Wednesday, September 3rd). And maybe we will be able to announce MEMBER 300!
Time to go. Don't forget, piano bar and open mic items now appear in a new section on the website (currently still under construction). Just click on the button at the top of every page on the website marked PIANO/OPEN MIC or click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretPianoBars.shtml
