Except for two items that need extensive rewriting and editing, and
one item for the last week of July, this issue includes all the news
items received about cabaret events for the next 5 weeks! So, with
that in mind, plus the combination of the 4th of July INDEPENDENCE
DAY celebration (and 4-day weekend), my own personal birthday on Sunday,
July 6th, and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE birthday party on Wednesday,
July 9th, there will be no issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Thursdays
July 3rd & 10th. This should allow the news to catch up with the newsletter,
rather than the other way around!
Not all the cabaret schedules for July have been received from
the clubs yet (and it is already the last day of the month) so I
know there is a lot of news out there for July still to be covered.
Banner advertising has also gone into the "summer doldrums" period,
which is why it is important for folks to join or rejoin as a CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE member in the next few weeks. The membership concept
was begun in the summer of 2001, when the website and newsletter became
independent again and had to be totally supported by banner advertising.
I was looking forward to a tough summer period, and consulted several
folks for their advice. The late Dottie Burman was the one who suggested
the membership setup. This was a far better idea than a "subscription"
system. Modeled after the public television support system, I could
still offer completely free newsletters and a completely free website,
supported by members and advertising. The membership year was scheduled
to begin during the "advertising poor" summer months, thus allowing
membership donations to make up for lost advertising revenue.

ONLINE in the next few weeks - over 150 folks have already joined
for 2008-2009, 85 of whom became members as part of the ticket sales

My apartment is just a few blocks from the East River (actually since
Manhattan is an island, it is still the Hudson River, eastern branch).
That's the waterway where MACY'S places the barges from which their
July 4th fireworks are sent to space. The main display will be from
barges located on the river between 23rd and 10th streets (I live
on 10th Street between Avenues C & D - Avenue D is just one block
from the river!) In other words, the party will be just a few steps
from my front door! An additional barge will be located just off the
South Street Seaport (Fulton Street). I can't wait!
Here's a little history note: The fireworks display used to take
place on the main Hudson River, between NYC and New Jersey. Crowds
would line the Hudson on both sides. But one year some of the cities
on the Jersey side decided that they would charge MACY'S for the
extra costs of policing and cleaning up after the event, so the
location became a NYC only event.
I am really looking forward to the next 10 days! First off, this is
the only issue of the newsletter this week so I have a bit of a break
from my usual routine. Then comes the 4th celebration on Friday, and
my own birthday on Sunday the 6th, and the a newsletter on Monday
the 7th, the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th Birthday Party on Wednesday
the 9th, and no new issue of the newsletter until Monday the 14th!
Not quite a 2-week vacation, but almost.

Congrats to Cathy Segal-Garcia out in Los Angeles. She has been hosting
a Wednesday Night Jazz Jam Session every week for 7 years at the same
venue, and then suddenly the venue was sold and the new owners apparently
had different plans for Wednesday nights. Over 300 people showed up
last Wednesday, the 25th of June, to attend the closing night. But
meantime, behind the scenes, Cathy was hunting for a new club and
found one - and the weekly series will continue without missing a
week! This Wednesday, July 2nd, the jam session opens at THE SMOKEHOUSE
RESTAURANT - and from what it sounds like, a far more convenient location!

"Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks
and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time,
her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese.
"Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some
not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette

a careless roll in the hay with Alice and subsequent 1950s-style "trouble".

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we can only use
news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the
news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule: If the
event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every
issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount to members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue
of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas; We also include
at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events
with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX,
BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
MORE "HERE & THERE"
OK - I cheated for this issue! 99% if it was produced on Sunday, allowing
me to sleep in a bit this morning after a rather busy weekend - plus
it was simply too hot and humid to go outdoors yesterday. If you sent
me a news item this morning, and it didn't make it in this issue,
it won't appear in the newsletter until the next issue, on Monday
the 7th of July. Please note however that some items (guests for the
CHATTERBOX on Thursday the 3rd, and details of the EVERYTHING OLD
IS NEW AGAIN radio show on Sunday the 6th) will be posted on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE message board when received. Any urgent news will be
either sent to the subscribers to the NYC BULLETIN SERVICE (about
400 strong) if it is a local news item, or sent out to all subscribers
in a special issue if necessary.
Ticket holders and performers for the 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY please note:
a special informational update on details for the show will be sent
you in the next day or so, but here's one item for all: the celebration
is all about CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and is not a personal birthday
party for Stu Hamstra - even though the birth date for the HOTLINE
and my birthday coincide. No personal gifts, please. I will be so
busy on the 9th that I might forget to acknowledge your gifts afterwards
- one year I actually left a tie someone gave me behind at the club
and it was never found later.
And one last thing: because folks have been sending computer virus
emails disguised as greeting cards, I make it a practice not to
open e-cards and e-invites that are linked to a website somewhere
that has to be clicked on to read. I also do not reply to e-invites
asking me to update my address information via a 3rd party website.
All for safety sake (and a practice you might want to adopt to avoid
a virus attack or spam attack if your address information is misused.)
One more reminder: with the combination of the 4th of July INDEPENDENCE
DAY celebration (and 4-day weekend), my own personal birthday on Sunday,
July 6th, and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE birthday party on Wednesday,
July 9th, THERE WILL BE NO ISSUES OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ON THURSDAYS
JULY 3RD & 10TH.
Occasionally (and far too rarely) a cabaret show takes on an unexpected
and most exciting dimension far beyond one's expectations. This was
the situation I found myself in at Vickie Phillips' "A Singer's Journey"
show on Thursday, June 26th at DON'T TELL MAMA. The full title of
the show continues as ' - the songs of Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill and
Charles Aznavour." That part of the title was a total "turn off" for
me - in the 30 or so years that I have been attending cabaret shows
and the 18 years that I have covered cabaret, I have seen simply far
too many shows based on the songs of this trio - most of them done
poorly. (I am about "up to here" with Cole Porter revues as well,
lately.)
But "A Singer's Journey" takes a brand new and most interesting
approach to this time-worn music. Vickie places them into the setting
of her own experience, using them as a stepping-off point in describing
her life as a performer, starting in Lebanon, Pennsylvania (she
is definitely not Amish) and leading to Montreal and Pittsfield
MA (and a brief marriage), and finally to Europe - where the songwriters
in the title had their roots. And along the way, Vickie takes hold
of her own Jewishness, her heritage, her faith. Her passion for
these songs is clearly evident (the first time I heard Vickie sing
was in a revue maybe 15 or more years ago paying homage to the same
songwriters).
Here is a show where the sum is far greater than its parts. I
was amazed at the attentiveness of the audience, hanging on to every
word and applauding every song as Ms. Phillips related her own story
as a singer and the story of her people throughout recent history.
As a result I gained a new perspective and appreciation of what
the songs were all about - providing a fresh burnish of the gold
of this material that had become dull and lifeless in my own mind.
If there is a quibble, it is a personal one: the presence of too
many props. Props are for theater. Vickie is an amazing actress,
and probably does not need most of the additional bits of clothing,
hats and scarves provided. Her own excitement, passion and enthusiasm
for the material and the sharp focus of the story line are probably
the only props needed.
Musical direction and arrangements (and some vocals) were admirably
provided by Gerry Dieffenbach, and accordion highlights and interludes
were performed by Carl Riehl (who should probably be given even
more to do, since his presence was only evident in the latter numbers
of the show). Director Bob Ost, who also is listed as writer, developed
just the right stage concepts (except maybe for the many props)
to make this a most interesting show.
On Saturday night, June 28th, I was invited to the closing night Sheera
Ben-David at THE OAK ROOM at the ALGONQUIN. The show was called "Come
Summer" and featured Sheera's brother Adam as musical director/arranger
with direction by Eric Michael Gillett. It was indeed a summer night
and I arrived a bit overcome by the heat of the subway platforms and
the walk to the club before the show - wearing a sports jacket in
the 80+ degrees - it was 11:30 pm! And while the show had as its theme
the songs of summertime, the combination of Ms. Ben-David's very crisp,
clear and captivating presentation of the material - much of it quite
familiar - and her delightfully fresh comments and stories soon had
me (and the room) feeling cool and refreshed. OK, the air conditioning
helped a bit.
There were some very interesting song choices, including Jason
Robert Brown's "A Summer in Ohio" and "Step Right Up" by Tom Waits
(more spoken than sung). A sultry "Blame It on the Summer Night"
(Strouse/Schwartz), a very suggestive "Something Cool" (Barnes)
and a twisting-rippling "Waters of March" (Jobim) were all standouts,
and my favorite was John Bucchino's triumphant "This Moment." It
being the last show of a two-week run, and with many family members
present, Ms. Ben-David invited her father to the stage to sing a
song to her mother (they were celebrating a 37th anniversary).

reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking

(unless it is a regular event featuring different performers each
week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount).
It is supposed to be another scorching hot day today, building to
another thunderstorm in advance of a slightly cooler weather front
that is supposed to move into the NYC area later today. The past few
days have all featured natural fireworks and hopefully things will
clear up for the man-made fireworks on Friday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, U.S.A.!
And that is just about the way it was.
