HERE & THERE
Last week's "early summer" heat wave went, then came back, and then
went away again and the next several days call for temperatures right
around 78-82 degrees. A really big thunderstorm roared through Manhattan
on Saturday evening, just as I was preparing to attend a cabaret show
midtown. It was a bit unexpected - at least by me. I was waiting at
the bus stop when it arrived, and talk about raining buckets! We see
a lot of lightening in NYC because of the many tall buildings but
this was a "light show" to challenge MACY'S when they put on their
fireworks display in the 4th of July! And the wind was unbelievable
(they said gusting to over 60 mph).
I have a route to just about every cabaret room in
town where each one is sort of "weather proof" and I can remain
under cover for nearly the whole way, either inside a bus or subway,
or using pedestrian tunnels here and there. But for MAMA'S there
is a minimum 4-5 block walk in the elements. My little $2.99 umbrella
(yes, inflation has struck - they used to be $1.99) would be no
match for this storm! So I turned back. Poor Daniel was not so fortunate
- he was out buying me a "father's day" gift and got caught in the
middle of it somewhere near the 5th Avenue APPLE store.
Just in case you miss it in the listings below, D.C. Anderson has
cancelled his performance tonight at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. D.C. has
been on the road with PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and had this one short
"window of opportunity" to do just one show in NYC before heading
with the company to California where they will perform for the next
nine months, putting his next possible NYC appearance some time in
March or April. This is a particular disappointment to me, since D.C.
is among the top performers in cabaret, is one of my favorites, and
although based in NYC, his appearances in town are rare.
Just a little important information: Most cabaret venues require a
minimum number of reservations in advance or they will ask you to
cancel your show. They need to hire a staff for each show, and they
require a certain amount of income to pay the staff - quite understandable.
This is another important reason why, if you intend to go to a show,
you should make a reservation. I remember a show several years ago
where I was told when I arrived at a club, that the show had been
cancelled - not enough reservations. So, with an hour to kill, I took
a stool by the bar to relax. I watched as at least a dozen people
(including two reviewers) were turned away - far more than the minimum
requirement for this particular room. None had bothered to make reservations,
and by this time the performer had already left, and of course no
staff had been assigned.
Tracy Stark has accepted our invitation to be musical director for
our 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY, sort of rounding out our list of performers.
Actually, I have invited two more performers to take part in the show
- both from long distances - but travel arrangements and travel expenses
may prevent them from appearing. And speaking of reservations, if
you can't attend an event but have made reservations, please cancel
them if possible. There are two folks out there who have ordered 2
tickets each to the show but have not paid for them, who have ignored
repeated requests for conformation/payment. That's four seats that
might be available. At midnight tonight, if I have not heard from
them, I will offer them for sale - check the website tomorrow. If
you really wish to come but forgot to make a reservation, put your
name on the waiting list and I will notify you if tickets are available.
I hope all cabaret performers and fans in the Boston-New England area
get a chance to check out TODAY'S TOP STORY above regarding a combination
Annual Meeting and Conference this Saturday at THE BLACKSMITH HOUSE.
The leaders, movers and shakers of BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret
Artists - http://www.bostoncabaret.com/
) seem to be constantly "thinking outside the box" and I wish them
great success in this event. I received the news a little late and
wish I had a little more time to get the word out, but I will give
it another plug in Thursday's issue.
Another cabaret organization that is doing its best to promote the
art and artists of cabaret is CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals -
http://www.chicagocabaret.org/
). They are in the midst of a series of cabaret events called "Musical
Mondays" at DRURY LANE WATER TOWER PLACE, the second of which is tonight.
It is already sold out, as is the next show on Monday, July 14th (see
below). In fact, in July they will be adding an extra performance
date on Tuesday the 15th to try to handle the demand for tickets.
As in Boston (see above) Chicago does not have the large number of
cabaret venues that NYC has, but both towns have growing and active
cabaret organizations, so both CCP and BACA have set out to create
performing opportunities for its members.
I didn't mean to leave out DCCN (DC Cabaret Network - http://www.dccabaretnetwork.org/
) - they too have a limited number of cabaret venues, and they too
have sponsored cabaret events open to the public. In addition to their
monthly open-mic events (there is one tonight at THE WAREHOUSE THEATER
- see below), they will be putting on a series of shows in July in
connection with the D.C. Fringe Festival, featuring the members of
the organization.
Great news for all NYC area cabaret fans: Eric Michael Gillett will
be performing a solo cabaret show here in NYC in July at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM - his first solo NYC show in over 5 years! I really hope you
can catch one of his shows. His cabaret skills are without peer.
My good friend Marta Sanders is doing a show, also at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM, this weekend (Friday & Saturday). Marta is one of the most amazing
performers in cabaret, and I know Daniel and I will be at one of the
shows, and we are both wishing for a Spanish song (Marta lived in
South America for several years, and her songs and stories from that
period are incredible).
I only caught the tail end of the TONY AWARDS last night - I'm afraid
I got caught up in a LAW & ORDER marathon on another station. Daniel
stopped by to bring me my "father's day" gift and made me switch channels.
Actually the gift was a replacement for my iPod shuffle which was
stolen when Daniel got "mugged" in Queens a few months ago. Three
guys jumped him and fortunately all he lost was his wallet, his cell
phone and the iPod which I had loaned him for the weekend. It could
have been much worse, but apparently they weren't carrying any weapons
except a large rock.
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for
your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent
to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Banner sales are really off this summer - even more than usual. Two
of my longtime and faithful advertisers have advised me that they
are dropping their ads for the summer. This is the reason for the
BIRTHDAY PARTY event - we need to raise at least $500 in advertising
each week to keep this entire operation viable. The party will raise
about $2500 - or enough for 5 weeks of the summer. We are hopeful
that a number of folks will also join as members during the summer
to help us keep our bills, rent, web charges, etc. paid until fall
when advertising picks up again. You support, membership contributions,
and advertising bookings are all appreciated.
The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website is undergoing some changes - it
is impossible to start with a "clean slate" since there are already
over 6,200 pages of news, views and reviews on the website and to
reformat each and every page is neigh impossible. But right now the
opening page consists of new items followed by a listing - as complete
as the folks who send their news items in make possible - of cabaret
and open-mic events all over the world for that day (it is changed
to the new day around 9:00 am every day).
The left column now includes links to the last 3
or 4 newsletters sent out, plus a new feature: links to my reports
and reviews on shows seen lately. There is also a new page in the
review section where even more report links (I am adding a few more
each night, hopefully going back to the beginning of 2008).
More changes are on the way - each change requires
making sure that current links are preserved so it take a little
time. Check it out - and ideas and suggestions are always welcome.
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last
minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as
a report on shows seen since the last issue.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised
on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every
MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are
subject to change without notice.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
MORE "HERE & THERE"
All 85 folks who bought tickets to our "SOLD OUT" 18th Birthday Party
also joined as 2008-2009 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - and several
others who couldn't come to the show have joined in the past few weeks
as well (2008-2009 memberships went on sale on May 5th). That means
nearly 100 folks have already joined for the new year! If you are
among those who already joined, thanks for your support!
All 2007-2008 memberships expire on July 5th, 2008
- less than 3 weeks from now. I don't want current members or new
members to miss one day of membership benefits. Just click on the
button marked JOIN HERE at the top of any page of the website to
see all the levels and benefits of memberships that are available
(or click on this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
). Then just click on the PayPal button of your choice (SILVER,
GOLD, SPECIAL) for "one-click" signup. Your membership donations,
along with banner ad sales, are what keeps this while operation
going. Your support is very much needed - and very much appreciated!
I did get to catch three cabaret events since the Thursday issue went
out - the first being last Thursday, the 12th, at DON'T TELL MAMA
at 6:30 pm. The show was "Grace Notes: a Singers' Soiree" hosted by
Grace Cosgrove, and presented monthly. Joining Grace were Eric Michael
Gillett, Melanie Vaughan, Maureen Kelley Stewart, Aaron Lee Battle,
newcomer Jessica Park and surprise guest Sheera Ben-David (who opens
tomorrow night at THE OAK ROOM AT THE ALGONQUIN). All this for a $15
cover! Grace is giving performers a marvelous opportunity to try out
new material as well as reach new audiences. The talent on stage for
this show were all amazing - including the "newcomer" (Grace promises
at least one newcomer each show). The room was packed - so much so
that at times it was next to impossible for performers and their musical
directors to make it to the stage. Another disruption was the late
arrival of several audience members, even though the show itself started
about 15 minutes late. But with the quality of the performers - and
the performances, this show was fantastic, and I look forward to the
rest of the shows in this series. Mike Kalbo, the new owner of MAMA'S,
was in the room at the start of the show and I could not resist mentioning
to him how many cabaret stars would be appearing in the next hour
in this room - and much credit goes to Mike and also to booking manager
Sidney Myer who have revitalized this 25-year old cabaret venue to
even beyond its glory days of yore. Next show is on Tuesday, July
15th - the announced cast includes, in addition to Ms. Cosgrove and
Mr. Gillett, Anna Bergman, vocal group Mama Said, Adam Alexander and
newcomer Lawrence Florek, plus another surprise guest.
I'm glad that a few days have passed since I saw the next show on
my "shows seen" list. It was also at DON'T TELL MAMA, on Friday night,
June 13th at 9:00 pm. You see, I was just a bit disappointed that
more of the regular NYC cabaret crowd was not around to catch Lucio
Fernandez' "The Cuban Kid in Concert." More fun you could not pack
into 75 minutes. With a great Cuban-style band (think "I Love Lucy")
and the inimitable and unpredictable Mr. Fernandez at the helm, the
show hit me totally by surprise. Expecting an evening of Spanish songs
with lots of sambas, rumbas and salsas, it was mostly showtunes! (But
with a Cuban twist!). Multi-talented Lucio is not just a singer, not
just a poet (CDs of his original poetry are given away after the show),
but he also happens to be a commissioner for a town in New Jersey,
a member of the school board and very active in local and state politics.
But most of all, he is wildly and uncontrollably entertaining! The
show had more twists, turns and surprises than a Law & Order plot,
with even the band at times going off on its own to spite some comment
made towards them. Claiming to be humble and shy, this Cuban kid was
instead bold and proud - going into areas that other cabaret performers
might fear to tread. The show will be presented for the next two Fridays
in June, the 20th & 27th. Make that reservation, grab a table, order
a cuba libre (happens to be my favorite drink and Randy makes the
best) and enjoy.
After the show I walked down Ninth Avenue to 42nd Street and THE LAURIE
BEECHMAN for another episode of AFTER PARTY. It was "Wicked Night"
with several members of the cast of WICKED (past and present) taking
part. Normal host Brandon Cutrell was away in the Midwest along with
normal musical director Ray Felman (how I could use the word normal
connected to either of these two defies explanation). Instead Tracy
Stark was at the piano and Marty Thomas (currently in the cast of
XANADU was co-host along with the very normal Alysha Umphress. OK,
Alysha is exceptional, not just normal. I got there at 10:45 pm, the
show got going around 11:00 pm, Daniel arrived at 11:30 pm and we
were there until nearly 1:00 am. Mr. Thomas did an delightful job
of filling in for the absent Mr. Cutrell - although their hosting
styles are quite different. Once again one cannot help bing impressed
by the wealth of young talent on this town! One high point of the
evening was the appearance of Jennie Lynn Randall, who is performing
a Nancy Wilson revue this weekend and next at a venue formerly unknown
to me - The SHOOTING STAR THEATRE located at the South Street Seaport
(see details above). By the way, Daniel and I enjoyed "Tower #3" from
the selection of towered treats offered at THE BEECHMAN. Delicious!
AFTER PARTY takes place starting around 10:45 pm every Friday night
at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN - I have no idea what time it goes on until
- but have heard rumors.
I must admit, I don't read books and magazines much anymore. The reason
is "physical." For most of my life I have been slightly nearsighted,
making reading a joy. Then just after college I discovered I was very
nearsighted, and was fitted with glasses so I could drive, etc. Reading
was still a joy because I could do so without the glasses. But lately
I discover I don't need the glasses anymore - except for reading (a
different prescription to be sure). So I don't read books much. The
other day, however, I received a book in the mail that I have found
interesting, informative and most fascinating. The name of the book
is ACTING SONGS and is written by David Brunetti - a name quite familiar
to cabaret folks in this town. While it is written more particularly
to musical theater than cabaret, there is so much information in the
book of importance to both I most highly recommend it. And not simply
to performers! I learned more about the performance side of musical
theater (and cabaret) in the first 10 pages or so than I would ever
imagine possible. It isn't a book about "technique" but a very practical,
well written and most informative handbook for preparing one's self
as a singer. Go to http://www.actingsongs.com/
for ordering information.
By the way, this is not a treatise - it is a book
that everyone will enjoy - even Daniel picks it up to read when
he drops by and I am too busy at that moment to converse with him.
In fact, when he is here, he calls it his book.
Most distressing: Sometimes I have to go to a performer's (and sometimes
a venue's) website to find a bit of missing information for an item
I am writing, only to discover that the website is hopelessly out
of date! One I went to this morning was listing a show from 2 years
ago on the opening page as their next performance! And don't even
talk to be about MySpace - I find the page layouts confusing and at
times far to "busy" with star-bursts, rotating icons, etc. to be able
to comprehend. There are times when the internet dis-informs as well
as informs.
Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items
in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can
be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.svhamstra.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
. If your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't
reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking
place in the next 3 weeks or so. Items only appear once in the newsletter
(unless it is a regular event featuring different performers each
week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount).
With D.C. Anderson's show cancelled for tonight, I have to go over
my schedules to see what else is out there. Tomorrow night I have
a reservation for Kevin Dozier's show at MAMA's and Wednesday night
for Gretchen Reinhagen in the same venue. Friday is set aside for
Tommy Femia's JUDY LIVE! show also at MAMA'S at 9:00 pm.
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Thursday, then.
