LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER are nearly sold out. The show features 2008-MAC
AWARD winner Phil Bond, Edd Clark, Hector Coris, Cynthia Crane, 2008-MAC
AWARD winner John De Marco, Teresa Fischer, 2008-MAC AWARD winner

Moody, Krisanthi Pappas, 2008 MAC/HANSON AWARD winner Maureen Kelley
Stewart and Alysha Umphress. 2008-MAC AWARD winner Miles Phillips,

The party celebrates the start of the new 2008-2009
membership year which officially begins July 6th - the date in 1990
when the first CABARET HOTLINE (print edition) was published (we
were first on the web with cabaret news - since 1997!). The theme
of the show is: TURNING 18 - OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE! The purpose of
the show and the membership drive is to raise the funds necessary
to keep the website and the newsletter from closing down during
the June-July-August period when new banner advertising drops to
close to zero.
REMEMBER: NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE THE DAY OF
THE SHOW! NO COMPS! Please don't call THE BEECHMAN - they are not
taking reservations for this event.
Tickets are just $10 - but must be purchased in combination
with a 2008-2009 membership: $30 for a SILVER combo; $85 for a GOLD
combo; $250 CRYSTAL membership gets you 2 free tickets. If you can
make it to the show and haven't ordered your ticket yet, this would
be a perfect time to renew your membership and get your ticket at
the same time! Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt.shtml
to place your order. Once more: SEATING IS LIMITED TO 85 - your
reservation is not assured until payment is made (that's why we
recommend using PayPal).
If you can't attend and want to send congratulations
(or if you have a show or CD to promote) you can support the event
by purchasing an ad in the program booklet - costs start at just
$20. Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
. Deadline for ads is June 24th.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised
on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every
MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are
subject to change without notice.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
HERE & THERE
It is a totally, terrifically, fantastically beautiful day today here
in NYC and I simply can't wait to get this newsletter sent out so
I can enjoy some "hours in the sun"! Actually it was a pretty good
weekend - occasional rain showers, but here in NYC we always say:
"If you don't like the weather, wait an hour."
It has been a busy week here in the penthouse offices
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE overlooking lower Manhattan. The change
from May to June means a ton of cabaret schedules and publicity
releases come pouring in. Plus ticket orders for our July 9th show
and in a few days we begin our JUNE MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN (all current
memberships expire on the 5th of July) with the 2008-2009 membership
year starting on the 6th (which happens to be the 18th birthday
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and my own personal birthday as well).
Next July (2009) I will celebrate my 70th and the
following year the newsletter celebrates its 20th, and believe it
or not, I am already planning a year-long series of events from
July 2009 to July 2010! OK, I am beginning to jot down some ideas
and notes.
Only 6 tickets remain to be sold (as of 11:00 am today) for this year's
18th BIRTHDAY PARTY at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN to be held on Wednesday,
July 9th starting a 7:00 pm. All tickets sold this year include a
2008-2009 membership - SILVER MEMBER/TICKET combo is $30 and GOLD
MEMBER/TICKET combo is $85 - which means that the actual cost of the
ticket is $10. Please remember, there is a $15 food/drink minimum
at THE BEECHMAN. For more information, see this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCABHT080709Bday18a.shtml
NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD ON THE DAY OF THE SHOW even
if some remain unsold - you must have a paid ticket to attend the
show (no comps).
There has been a lot of confusion about the "Combo
Ticket/Membership." Last year we sold combo SILVER tickets for $40
and regular tickets for $35. This year the combo SILVER is just
$30 and we eliminated the regular ticket (but if you wish to pay
$35 for a non-combo ticket, I won't object). But there are still
folks who want to buy a non-member ticket at $10 - and that's impossible.
Next year I might just offer non-member tickets for the same price
as the SILVER COMBO ticket - whatever that price might be. This
year, GOLD combo tickets cost $85 (last year they cost $95). This
reduced price is made possible because of the generous arrangements
offered by Phil Bond and Kenny Bell at THE BEECHMAN.
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/ ), MIRANDA MUSIC
(http://www.mirandamusic.com/
), Sandi Durell (http://www.timelessdivas.com/
), Joyce Moody (http://www.joycemoody.com/
), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/
), Joanna Mosca (http://www.joannamosca.com/
) and Chelsea Hudgens (http://www.chelseasdesktop.com/
) plus 2 additional anonymous sponsors.
If you can't attend our 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW on July 9th, (or if you
have a show or CD to promote, or want to send congratulations on the
birthday or to our award winners) you can support the event by purchasing
an ad in the program booklet (costs start at just $20). Just go to
http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
and fill in the size ad you wish to purchase and I will send you a
PayPal invoice (we prefer PayPal - the safest way to transmit money
via the internet). Deadline for ads is June 24th.
In the last issue I wrote that John Hoglund had asked me to send his
thanks for all the many cards, e-mails and phone messages he received
after his recent hospitalization, which I was more than happy to do.
Well, you know critics: they aren't happy unless they can find fault
with something - as minor as that something is. Well minutes after
the issue went out I received an e-mail from John. He apparently was
outraged about the inclusion in the item that he had lost 30 pounds
during the episode. He reminded me that he distinctly told me the
number was 31 pounds, and demanded a correction in the next issue.
This is a sure sign that he is well on his way to recovery. Welcome
back to the land of the "irate critics," John. Correction made.
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for
your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent
to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible
I had to take a break and run around the corner to the supermarket
and get some cereal (it is on sale, 2-for-1 and I plan to stock up
this week). I almost didn't come back! The weather is so fantastic,
if there was an empty spot on the park benches outside the apartment
building, I would probably still be out there and you would get this
issue sometime tonight. But all the other seniors in the five buildings
that make up this complex had beat me to the benches. The benches
will empty out later when school lets out and
the skateboarders take possession of the park area.
I
finally made it back to the POOLE PARTY (EVERY Saturday at 8:30 pm
at DON'T TELL MAMA) last week. Being out of circulation for several
weeks with that persistent cold, and the playing catch-up by attending
shows whose earlier dates I missed, it was time to return. With the
new cabaret/piano bar/lounge arrangement at MAMA'S, the POOLE PARTY
has moved to the larger back cabaret room. For some reason about 20
folks from Cleveland OH were at the show - and of course host Michael
Brill made the most of the situation, and his kidding was followed
up by all the other comics in the show. This is a fun show - always
starts out with "Award Winning Musical Comedy Star Sidney Myer" and
then about a dozen or so comics (some good, some not so good, but
mostly good) take their turns at the mic. Best of all, 95% of the
material is both funny and clever (they don't resort to profanity
here to get a laugh). It's only a $15 cover ($10 for CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members) and where else can you see a show that features Sidney
Myer for ten-bucks - plus a 2-drink minimum?
I did a "double-header" on Thursday night at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
(I have to remind myself not to stay out late with Daniel on Wednesday
nights, since I am up at 6:30 am on Thursdays, especially if I am
going to see two shows that evening). Both shows were at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM.
The first was Jeff Harnar's Cole Porter tribute show
at 7:30 pm. You can always count on a well structured and well performed
show when Jeff Harnar is the performer. All his shows are well researched
and his vocals are among the best in the business. His "laid-back"
style and easy delivery made this an entertaining hour of Porter
classics, with just a smidgen of patter here and there to set up
the songs or medleys. Sparkling arrangements by Alex Rybek gave
the show the depth and fullness. Ricky Ritzel better watch his back
- Jeff's dead-on impersonation of Jimmy Durante singing the gender-bending
song "Little Skipper" was hilarious.
Then Daniel and I tried out a Mexican fast-food place
around the corner (note to self: no Mexican food after 9:00 pm)
and we returned to the METROPOLITAN ROOM for Julie Reyburn's show,
with the imaginative title "Julie Reyburn at The Metropolitan Room."
With Mark Janas at the piano (reunited with July after a few years
of birthing and child raising on Julie's part) and a swinging band
that included Ritt Henn on bass, Walter Usiatynski on drum and Julie's
husband Thor Fields on guitar.
Where does one begin? First off, the closest song
to a Cole Porter song was another Cole - Nat King (Straighten Up
& Fly Right, written with Irving Mills). Secondly, every song was
done so well - so clearly, so enthusiastically, so perfectly, one
is hard pressed to single out one as being super-special, but I
will do so any way. It was a new song: Come Home (from a new work
in progress, Pinocchio of Chelsea with music by Mark Janas and Lyrics
by Peter Napolitano) - bound to quickly become a cabaret classic.
Although written for Geppetto, the woodcarver who gave the puppet
life, Julie has made this song her own - and I defy anyone to try
to sing it better. A new take on and old song - "Blackberry Winter"
- and a most touching "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd,
were two more outstanding interpretations from an evening of outstanding
interpretations. This show was Julie Reyburn at her very best -
bookmarked by two Bob Dylan tunes with a mid-show duet with guest
star David Gurland that shook the rafters. It was Julie's birthday
and there was cake. But the icing on the cake was the magnificent
performance by the birthday girl herself - one of cabaret's best.
This show has two more "not-to-be-missed" performances - Thursdays,
June 5th & 12th at 10:00 pm.
SPECIAL TO ALL WHO ORDERED TICKETS TO THE BIRTHDAY PARTY: Your reservation
is not confirmed until payment is received, and since we are nearly
sold out, please let me know if you still want the tickets you ordered
but have not paid for so I can release them for sale. Tickets not
paid for by the time we completely sell out will be considered cancelled
- I will notify you first, of course. Important: if you did not receive
a PayPal invoice when you ordered your tickets, notify me at once
- I had a day or two when my DSL line failed during PayPal invoice
processing and while the indication here was that an invoice was sent,
two ticket purchasers reported they never got an invoice.
Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items
in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can
be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
. If your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't
reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking
place in the next 3 weeks or so. Items only appear once in the newsletter
(unless it is a regular event featuring different performers each
week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount).
Tonight I am back at DON'T TELL MAMA for the NYC cabaret debut of
Kevin Dozier (which reminds me: I have to make a reservation or I'll
be out if luck) at 7:00 pm, imaginatively titled "Introducing Kevin
Dozier". Then it is back home for some rest and then off to a midnight
show in my East Village neighborhood featuring a friend of Daniel's
(have to brush up on my Spanish). (Reminder to self: No Mexican food
after 9:00 pm).
If you're visiting the website, check out the new
organization of nightly piano-bar, open-mic events posted on the
home page for today and on the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
) at the end of each day's listings. If you event is not posted,
just send in complete information - you can find a handy form to
send a press release to me at http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Monday, then.
