IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
ANNIE HUGHES ADDED TO CAST OF 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW JULY 9th
NEARLY SOLD OUT - ONLY 11 RESERVATIONS LEFT
*** CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE SPECIAL EVENT ***
We are thrilled to announce that long-time cabaret favorite Annie
Hughes has been added to the star-studded cast scheduled to perform
at our 18th Birthday Party on Wednesday, July 9th at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN
THEATER, NYC! Annie is flying in from Wisconsin to be part of the
show. She will join 2008-MAC AWARD winner Phil Bond, Edd Clark, Hector
Coris, Cynthia Crane, 2008-MAC AWARD winner John De Marco, 2008-MAC
AWARD winner Eric Michael Gillett, David Gurland, Teresa Fischer,
Matt Leahy, Joyce Moody, Krisanthi Pappas, 2008 MAC/HANSON AWARD winner
Maureen Kelley Stewart and Alysha Umphress. 2008-MAC AWARD winner
Miles Phillips, as the JEFF MATSON AWARD winner, and 2008-MAC AWARD
winner Tracy Stark, as the DOTTIE BURMAN AWARD winner have also been
invited to perform.
The party celebrates the start of the new 2008-2009
membership year which officially begins July 6th - the date in 1990
when the first CABARET HOTLINE (print edition) was published (we
were first on the web with cabaret news - since 1997!). The theme
of the show is: TURNING 18 - OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE! The purpose of
the show and the membership drive is to raise the funds necessary
to keep the website and the newsletter from closing down during
the June-July-August period when new banner advertising drops to
close to zero.
Now some important news to those who have not yet
purchased tickets: As of 11:00 am today, 74 of the 85 seats available
are taken. REMEMBER: NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE THE DAY OF THE
SHOW! NO COMPS! Please don't call THE BEECHMAN - they are not taking
reservations for this event.
Tickets are just $10 - but must be purchased in combination
with a 2008-2009 membership: $30 for a SILVER combo; $85 for a GOLD
combo; $250 CRYSTAL membership gets you 2 free tickets. If you can
make it to the show and haven't ordered your ticket yet, this would
be a perfect time to renew your membership and get your ticket at
the same time! Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt.shtml
to place your order. Once more: SEATING IS LIMITED TO 85 - your
reservation is not assured until payment is made (that's why we
recommend using PayPal).
If you can't attend and want to send congratulations
(or if you have a show or CD to promote) you can support the event
by purchasing an ad in the program booklet - costs start at just
$20. Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
. Deadline for ads is June 24th.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised
on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every
MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are
subject to change without notice.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
HERE & THERE
GOING - GOING - ALMOST GONE! Only 11 tickets remain to be sold (as
of 11:00 am today) for our 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN
to be held on Wednesday, July 9th starting a 7:00 pm. We will probably
be SOLD OUT before Sunday. NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD ON THE DAY OF THE
SHOW - you must have a paid ticket to attend the show (no comps).
All tickets sold this year include a 2008-2009 membership - SILVER
MEMBER/TICKET combo is $30 and GOLD MEMBER/TICKET combo is $85 - which
means that the actual cost of the ticket is $10. Please remember,
there is a $15 food/drink minimum at THE BEECHMAN. For more information,
see this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCABHT080709Bday18a.shtml
Just in case you are confused, last year we sold
combo SILVER tickets for $40 and regular tickets for $35. This year
combo SILVER tickets are just $30 - $10 less than last year, and
$5 less than last years non-membership ticket. We are not selling
any regular non-membership tickets this year. GOLD combo tickets
cost $85 (last year they cost $95). This reduced ticket price is
made possible because of the generous arrangements offered by Phil
Bond and Kenny Bell at THE BEECHMAN.
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/
), MIRANDA MUSIC (http://www.mirandamusic.com/ ), Sandi Durell (http://www.timelessdivas.com/
), Joyce Moody (http://www.joycemoody.com/
), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/
) and Joanna Mosca (http://www.joannamosca.com/
) plus 2 additional anonymous sponsors.
It's NYCs worst kept secret: THE AFTER PARTY at the LAURIE BEECHMAN
on Friday nights starting around 10:30 pm and lasting until sometime
near 4:00 pm. Co-Hosted by Brandon Cutrell & Alysha Umphress, the
evening is a rocking, rollicking and rip-roaring "anything goes" party
that has only three rules: showtunes, showtunes and showtunes. Week
after week the cabaret room gets jammed to the walls with musical
theater and cabaret performers and fans - including everyone from
TONY and MAC winners to "new kids just off the bus." Brandon keeps
the bold, buff and beautiful kids in the crowd cheering with free
shots (names drawn from a bucket), skillful patter (at times a bit
bawdy) and songs by performers from the audience and the very talented
staff - including cabaret favorite Lisa Asher. Professor Ray Felman
is at the piano adding a bit of whimsy and musical humor to the evening's
fun. My friend Daniel and I drop by a few times a month and I am always
amazed at the many musical theater stars that drop by - and perform!
There is no cover and a minimum is only enforced when all the tables
get filled (usually by around 11:15 pm) - but with the BEECHMAN'S
fantastic late-night menu and hearty drinks, the only thing you have
to worry about is maxing out your credit card! I'll probably be back
this Friday night with Daniel and a new pal of ours, Arialis (none
of us can sing very well, but Arialis is quite a dancer).
I learned a great lesson from a talented (but fairly new) performer
the other night. The lesson: pauses are just as important as the written
lyrics when performing a song. Suzanne Carrico proved that to me in
her new show "The Friendliest Thing" at the METROPOLITAN ROOM on Monday
night. With the increasingly amazing Tedd Firth at the piano (providing
some spectacular arrangements) and old reliable Steve Doyle on bass,
Suzanne proved again why she fully deserved the 2008 MAC Award for
female debut. The songs were from a new point of view when compared
to her previous show - seductive and provocative songs, almost the
"dark side" of the cabaret songbook. Some truly incredible and unexpected
song pairings gave the performance an attention-keeping spin.
"Do It Again" (Gershwin/DeSylva) never sounded so
sexy - you can skip the Viagra after hearing Suzanne perform this
one. A triplet of songs from Harold Arlen ("Dissertation on the
State of Bliss" [Gershwin] "I Had Myself a True Love" [Mercer] "Hooray
for Love" [Robin]) near the end of the show almost sounded like
a romantic film score - such beauty, such class! Only thing missing
was the violins! Director Mary Cleere Haran's touches were evident
throughout. Ms. Carrico (some day I will pronounce her name correctly
- some day) is just beginning in the cabaret world, and yet she
shows a poise and confidence that even some longtime cabaret icons
have yet to achieve! Impeccable phrasing, lovely vocals, physical
beauty, inspired song choices and nearly perfect timing all came
together to make this performance (and this performer) a true delight.
I think I just might "do it again."
Sad news as THE BRADSTAN COUNTRY HOTEL in White Lake, NY (http://www.bradstancountryhotel.com/
) and its famed Nancy LaMott room begins its final season on June
22nd. There is an amazing lineup of performers scheduled for Sunday
evenings through October 12th including such stars as Christine Andreas,
Liz Callaway, Natalie Gamsu, Barbara Brussell, Tom Andersen, KT Sullivan,
Jeanne MacDonald and more - check out the website for the full listing.
A new room - in a favorite haunt - opened quietly last weekend. It
is the DON'T TELL MAMA LOUNGE, with its own entrance, comfortable
seating, plus a full-service bar. Official opening is set for Sunday,
June 15th - the night of the annual TONY awards, and MAMA'S has a
great party planned - details coming soon.
I forgot to include in the last issue's item about John Hoglund's
Nancy LaMott tribute benefit a big thank you from John for all the
many cards, e-mails and phone messages he received after his recent
hospitalization. He tells me that when he returned home his answering
machine was filled to capacity and that he is still answering some
of the hundreds of e-mails he received. The episode wasn't all bad
- John lost nearly 30 pounds. He lives a block over from me, and I
ran into him on the street yesterday and he really looks great!
If you want to have a fun Thursday night, head over to UNCLE CHARLIE'S
around 8:00 pm and treat yourself to David Pellegrene's "Cabaret Fever"
- a 45-minute musical treat performed by a different cabaret newcomer
each week, with David providing accompaniment - and encouragement.
I was there last Thursday and once again heard the delightful young
lad who stopped the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
show at THE MUSIC BOX ROOM - German Rodriguez. German puts so much
heart into whatever he sings, and his vocals are truly lovely, almost
angelic. This is not a "formal" cabaret show setting, and that's what
makes these weekly events so enjoyable and popular. The room is comfy
(it will be extended this summer to hold a larger audience), the service
is swift and efficient, and the whole experience is like going to
a gathering of friends in someone's living room. Comments, quips and
kidding are all part of the shows here. No cover, no minimum, and
David is the most pleasant of hosts. And after the show there is open
mic until dawn (or at least well past midnight).
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for
your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent
to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible
I'm going to "stick my neck out" on this one: Is the "Great American
Songbook" racist? Is cabaret for WASPS only? If you have a comment
or thought on this, drop me a line - I truly would like to receive
as many opinions on this as I can. Any comments I might report here
will remain anonymous. I might even set up a time and place in the
near future where we can discuss this.
SPECIAL TO ALL WHO ORDERED TICKETS TO THE BIRTHDAY PARTY: Your reservation
is not confirmed until payment is received, and since we are nearly
sold out, please let me know if you still want the tickets you ordered
but have not paid for - there are actually over 20 ticket orders unpaid
- so I can release them for sale. Tickets not paid for by June 16th
will be considered cancelled - I will notify you first, of course.
Important: if you did not receive a PayPal invoice when you ordered
your tickets, notify me at once - I had a day or two when my DSL line
failed during PayPal invoice processing and while the indication here
was that an invoice was sent, two ticket purchasers reported they
never got an invoice.
If you can't attend our 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW on July 9th, (or if you
have a show or CD to promote, or want to send congratulations on the
birthday or to our award winners) you can support the event by purchasing
an ad in the program booklet (costs start at just $20). Just go to
http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
and fill in the size ad you wish to purchase and I will send you a
PayPal invoice (we prefer PayPal - the safest way to transmit money
via the internet). Deadline for ads is June 24th.
Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items
in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can
be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
. If your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't
reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking
place in the next 3 weeks or so - we fell just a little behind today
because there is simply so much news we can cover in one issue. Items
only appear once in the newsletter (unless it is a regular event featuring
different performers each week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or
offers a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount).
Time to close off another issue, catch a quick nap, and then finish
a huge project that I have been working on - and then some cabaret:
two in a row at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - Jeff Harnar at 7:30 pm and
Julie Reyburn at 10:00 pm.
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Monday, then.
