when the first CABARET HOTLINE (print edition) was published! I
The theme of the show is: TURNING 18 - OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE! (no
politics, please). The purpose of the show and the membership drive
is to raise the funds necessary to keep the website and the newsletter
from closing down during the June-July-August period when new banner
advertising drops to close to zero.
If you can't attend and want to send congratulations
(or if you have a show or CD to promote) you can support the event
by purchasing an ad in the program booklet .There is a link on the
opening (home) page of the website - fill in the size ad you wish
to purchase). Deadline for ads is June 24th.
I am still looking for two more sponsors to help
with covering the costs of the event (every penny of tickets sold
will go to support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - as in the past). If
you wish to be a sponsor at $100 just go to the website and you
will find on the opening (home) page a link to the sponsorship form.
Sponsors are mentioned (if they wish) on all publicity information
sent and also get a 1/4 page ad (worth $35) in the program booklet.
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/
), MIRANDA MUSIC (http://www.mirandamusic.com/
) and Sandi Durell (http://www.timelessdivas.com/

of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised
on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every

the intimate art form of cabaret to West Michigan while continuing

and always entertaining for The Red Barn audiences. For the fourth
show and final show of the series, on Sunday May 25th at 7:00 pm,
Grand-Award winner Ellie Gramer of Hamilton, MI presents her new solo

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? Just e-mail a press
release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information
on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos
in jpg or gif format if available. Please send complete information
- and do not merely e-mail a copy of your flier or a reference to
a website. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
HERE & THERE
I missed a few highlights from the MAC AWARDS show of last Tuesday,
the most fun one was the presentation of the Piano Bar awards by the
unusual team of Maryann Lopinto and Sidney Myer. Mr. Myer, his usual
elegant self, inquired of Ms. Lopinto, her usual disorganized self,
for the envelopes to announce the winner. A very perplexed Maryann
first accused Mr. Myer of having the envelopes, but then hunted through
her usual collection of shopping bags which she had carried on stage,
and finally found them and the awards proceeded. It was like a Burns
& Allen routine, and these two should develop this into a whole show.
The most thrilling moment for me came before the
show. I was in line to enter right behind Karen Akers (who opens
tomorrow night at the OAK ROOM AT THE ALGONQUIN) and she said to
MAC President Ricky Ritzel, who was greeting at the door, that she
was seated with Erik Michael Gillett. Ricky turned to me and said
"Show Karen where Erik is sitting (like I had a seating chart or
something). First person I asked said something about Eric being
near the front, and we were fortunate to find Cynthia Crane and
husband Ted Story seated nearby, and Cynthia knew exactly where
he was and pointed him out - right in front of the stage at the
opposite side of the room. So I had the thrill of escorting the
very glamorous Karen Akers through the entire main area of B.B.KINGS
to Eric's table - glowing with pride of the thought that folks might
think she was my date for the night!
I totally overlooked in the Thursday issue a mention
of Klea Blackhurst who was MC for the night - a daunting task that
very few are able to accomplish, and even fewer willing to take
on. Ms. Blackhurst came through with nary a flub - even throwing
in a few ad-libs and improvised quips along the way.
You can find the listing of all the winners on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - link is on the home (opening page).
I made it to one show since Thursday - and then
the rains came, followed by cold & wind and still, very careful for
my health, I took the rest of the week off. But what a show it was
- a rare appearance in NYC of singer, pianist and award-winning songwriter
Robyn McCorquodale at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Thursday night at 10:00
pm. Usually sailing all over the world working on cruise ships and
in exotic ports-of-call, Ms. McCorquodale presented a show of mostly
standards, all of them performed in her own "patented" jazz style
to a most appreciative audience. A resident of Vancouver, BC, she
hasn't appeared in NYC for several years - let us indeed hope that
we need not wait so long for her next NYC show - her vocals are extraordinary
- crisp, clear and filled with color and shadowing.
Tickets continue on sale for our 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY at THE LAURIE
BEECHMAN to be held on Wednesday, July 9th starting a 7:00 pm but
I don't know for how long - already nearly 30 of the 85 seats have
been sold, leaving less than 60 unsold. All tickets sold this year
include a 2008-2009 membership - SILVER MEMBER/TICKET combo is $30
and GOLD MEMBER/TICKET combo is $85 - which means that the actual
cost of the ticket is $10. This has led to some confusion - let me
explain: last year we sold combo SILVER tickets for $40 and regular
tickets for $35. This year combo SILVER tickets are just $30 - $10
less than last year, and $5 less than last years non-membership ticket
- so we are not selling any regular non-membership tickets this year.
GOLD combo tickets cost $85 (last year they cost $95). This reduced
ticket price is made possible because of the generous arrangements
offered by Phil Bond and Kenny Bell at THE BEECHMAN. Please remember,
there is a $15 food/drink minimum at THE BEECHMAN.
For this not planning to attend the show, the 2008-2009 CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE memberships, good through July 5, 2009, are also now on sale
(brand new members signing up before July 5th, when all the 2007-2008
memberships expire will get extra weeks on their new membership -
current members who don't want to miss a day of membership can renew
now). SILVER memberships still are just $20 - GOLD memberships remain
at $75. Other membership levels available. See http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on
the website for all benefits and details. We hit 478 members in the
current 2007-2008 membership year (which expire on July 5th), and
this year the goal is 500!
I have one possible sponsor lined up and am hoping to find at least
one additional sponsor for the 18th Birthday show to help cover the
costs of the event (every penny of tickets sold will go to support
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - as in the past). Sponsorships are available
for just $100. Go to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and you will
find on the opening (home) page a link to the sponsorship form - fill
it out with the amount you wish to contribute, and I will send you
a PayPal invoice. Sponsors get a 1/4 page ad in the program book (worth
$35), and will have their name and website mentioned (unless they
wish to remain anonymous) in all promotional materials for the event.

THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/
), MIRANDA MUSIC (http://www.mirandamusic.com/
) and Sandi Durell (http://www.timelessdivas.com/
).
Remember: If you can't attend (or if you have a show
or CD to promote, or want to send congratulations on the birthday
or to our award winners) you can support the event by purchasing
an ad in the program booklet (costs start at $20). There is a link
on the opening (home) page of the website - fill in the size ad
you wish to purchase and I will send you a PayPal invoice (we prefer
PayPal - the safest way to transmit money via the internet). Deadline
for ads is June 24th.
It is 12:30 pm - and after one more "spell check" this issue will
be on its way and it will be time for a nap - I will be out late tonight.
The rain is expected to clear away this afternoon, and while it will
be cool, I still intend to make it to THE TOWN HALL for THE BROADWAY
MUSICALS OF 1965, hosted by Scott Siegel. Big treat for both Daniel
and I is the inclusion in the cast of two of our favorite cabaret
performers - Julie Reyburn and Brandon Cutrell. Showtime is 8:00 pm,
and a few good seats are still available - the last two shows sold
out completely at showtime - many folks who had not purchased in advance
were turned away at the box office. All these BROADWAY BY THE YEAR
show feature top names in both Broadway and Cabaret - not to be missed.
Then, after the show, a friend of Daniel and mine is performing at
a club in the East Village - right near my apartment - at 12:30 am.
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Monday, then.
