) takes place this weekend, Friday May 16th through Sunday, May 18th
with shows in various venues of this famous summer resort town. Opening
night on the 16th from 8:30 to 10:00 pm, takes place at the VIXEN

) with a preview the acts appearing all weekend, including, Dane Vannatter
(Boston), Patricia Fitzpatrick (West Yarmouth), Brian Patton (Boston),

Tedi Marsh (Mashpee), Casey & Denise (Provincetown), and more! There
is a $10 cover. Then from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am, Casey Sanderson and

Saturday, the 17th from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm, features
a Cabaret Festival Inn Stroll - for $25, three inns open up their
living rooms for performances by 5 different Cabaret artists. Lounge
on comfy couches, or grab a seat on the floor. Seating is limited
so, book early! (The price includes admission to all three performances.
Each artist will perform his/her own show where two artists are

Cabaret and Cocktails in the Afternoon follows with
Dane Vannatter (Boston) performing at 2:45 pm at THE VIXIN followed
by Patricia Fitzpatrick (West Yarmouth) with Brian Patton on the
piano (Cape Cod) at 4:15 pm. Grab a cocktail and a seat for two
unforgettable performances. Tickets are $15 each or $25 for both
shows!
Saturday night from 8:30 to 10 pm, String of Pearls,
with Tony Regusis on piano, Chris Rathbun on bass, and Bart Weisman
on drums, perform at THE VIXIN. The singers, Susan Halloran, Jeanne
O'Connor, and Holli Ross, have a vast repertoire of jazz, cabaret
and pop material. String of Pearls began appearing at clubs, cabarets,
and concert halls throughout the metropolitan area and beyond. Since
then, this exceptional group has appeared in the JVC Jazz Festival,
at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Town Hall, the Latin Quarter,
The Manhattan Center, The Battleship Intrepid and The Kennedy Center,
Tickets are $15.
On Sunday, May 18th the Festival closes with Cabaret

2008 MAC AWARD winners Phil Bond (Special Production) and John De
Marco (Jazz Recording), and Boston area singer/songwriter Krisanthi
Pappas (Winner - MEMBERS' CHOICE Top 10 CDs of 2007) have been added
to the cast of this year's CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY.
The annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Birthday party
will be held on Wednesday, July 9th at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER.
The doors will open at 6:00 pm. Showtime will be promptly at 7:00
pm. Tickets are on sale now. SEATING IS LIMITED TO 85 - 15 already
sold. Tickets must be purchased online on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website use the link on the home (opening) page to order - no reservations
will be taken by the club, all tickets must be purchased in advance
- no tickets will be available the night of the show.
The purpose of the event is to raise the funds to
keep the website and the newsletter from closing down during the
June-July-August period when new banner advertising drops to close
to zero. The show also celebrates the start of the new 2008-2009
membership year which officially is July 6th - the date in 1990
when the first CABARET HOTLINE (print edition) was published! The
theme of the show is: TURNING 18 - OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE! (no politics,
please). We have chosen nine of the twelve-to-fourteen performers
who will appear in the show: 2008-MAC AWARD winner Phil Bond - Hector
Coris - Cynthia Crane - 2008-MAC AWARD winner John De Marco - David
Gurland - Teresa Fischer - Matt Leahy - Joyce Moody - Krisanthi
Pappas. 2008-MAC AWARD winner Miles Phillips, as the JEFF MATSON
AWARD winner, and 2008-MAC AWARD winner Tracy Stark, as the DOTTIE
BURMAN AWARD winner have also been invited to perform. There may
be one or two surprise guest performers as well.

Mary Foster Conklin will perform her acclaimed show "Blues for Breakfast

SOIREE series. Mary Foster Conklin, a longtime vocalist with Art Lillard's
15-piece Heavenly Band, can be heard on his latest recording Reasons
to Be Thankful, on Summit Records. She is a three-time MAC Award winner,
a three-time Backstage Bistro Award winner, and recipient of 2007
MAC Award for Jazz Recording of the Year. Her latest recording, "Blues
for Breakfast", is a tribute to the late great singer, songwriter
and pianist Matt Dennis (1914-2002), who was hired by Tommy Dorsey
in the 1940s as an arranger/composer and later had a full career of
his own playing the country's top supper clubs. His songs "Angel Eyes"

After a month off, jazz legend Annie Ross has returned to her "every

). Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for
over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of
the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is
one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one
of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market",
"Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks
and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time,
her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese.
"Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some
not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette

). Soprano Diane McNaron's Kurt Weill Retrospective, has not heard
in Birmingham in nearly a decade. McNaron, who appears widely as a

Argentine composer Valdo Sciammarella, to be released in November
2008. Thomas Bagwell has served as an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan
Opera, the Washington National Opera and the Santa Fe Opera, among
others. He appears regularly at the Marlboro Music Festival and has
collaborated in recital with such luminaries as Midori, Marilyn Horne,
Susan Graham, Frederica von Stade, Denyce Graves and James Morris.
He teaches Collaborative Piano at Mannes College of Music and records

Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
HERE & THERE
"A lot of fun, but a lot too long" sort of sums up my thoughts on
the 2008 MAC AWARD show at B.B.KING'S on Tuesday night, May 6th. The
show started fairly promptly (as awards shows go) at around 7:35 or
so, but didn't end until nearly 11:30 pm. No fault of the show's producers
and director I feel. Even the acceptance speeches (for the most part)
were fairly short.
Biggest problem was the presenters who, given their
moment in the sun, decided to ramble on far beyond what was called
for. Danny Aiello even broke into song, and discussed the restaurant
history and even Churchill Downs in his presentation of Linda Amiel
Burns' Board of Directors' Award. Judy Gold could have cut her presentation
down to about four words just by eliminating the "f" word. TONY's
Adam Feldman treated us to a "in your face, cabaret lovers" speech
informing everyone in many words that this year's TIME OUT NY award
winners were not your usual cabaret fare - all well and good, I
suppose, but did he have to prove it by asking the "winning" duo
of Bridget Everett & Kenny Mellman to perform their "scat" filled
(not the good kind) number live? I think Judy Gold might have provided
some of the lyrics. Thankfully (as is the norm) most of the jazz
and comedy performers did not show up to accept their awards, shortening
the evening by at least 20 minutes (and sparing us more "scat").
And to Lewis Black: stay home next time with the other comics -
or at least come prepared with some funny material.
Biggest joke of the evening was the reading of the
14 female and 9 male Celebrity Artist nominees. Were any of them
(except Tom Wopat, who presented with Faith Prince, the final 3
awards of the evening) actually in the room? The two winners (Steve
Ross & Christine Ebersole) weren't there, that's for sure. I still
don't understand the whys and wherefores of these two categories.
The names never appeared on the MAC preliminary ballot for vetting
- I don't even know who nominated them - is Donny Osmond on the
MAC membership list?
Ah, but the show itself was glorious - especially
for the 80 percent of the sold-out house that stayed beyond 11:00
pm - many folks had trains and busses to catch for NJ and LI, and
others - once their category was announced and they found they didn't
win, left as well. Director Lennie Watts did a terrific job lining
up talent, and attempting to get all the performers on and off stage
to keep the evening moving. The lineup of last year's MAC winners
singing the MAC AWARD SONG OF THE YEAR winners of past years was
inspired and delightful. Gloria Lynn's performance (winner of a
Special Achievement Award in Jazz), was unforgettable. While there
were perhaps a few too many ballads through the night, the performers
gave their all - truly an entertaining and enjoyable show.
Award for unique acceptance speech goes to Ray Jessel,
who's Musical Comedy category got lumped together with the Impersonation
category, and he cleverly noted that he won out over Barbra Streisand
(Steven Brinberg) and Marilyn Monroe (Jimmy James).
Award for best acceptance speech had to go to Barbara
Brussell (Major Cabaret Artist winner), who had been nominated before
seven times without a win. She burst on stage, both breathless and
speechless, accepted the award with an excited "thank you" and ran
off stage.
My favorite winner? MAC/HANSON AWARD winner Maureen
Kelly Stewart! What a lovely recognition of a lovely lady!

Daniel and I slipped out at 11:30 - there may have been something
we missed at the end but neither of us had dinner and both of us were
looking forward to one of the new "party towers" they serve at THE
LAURIE BEECHMAN - three plates of food stacked on a special serving
tower - and we wanted to get to the AFTER PARTY - SPECIAL EDITION
that Brandon Cutrell was hosting. Fortunately they were keeping the
kitchen open late, and we were able to enjoy TOWER #2 - Fried Calamari,
Meat Balls and Cheese Balls - huge portions of each! These treats
are available at Brandon's usual Friday night fests, but with me out
of commission for three weeks, we had yet to sample one. Yum yum -
and fun fun as Brandon & Co. brought MAC winner after MAC winner to
the stage to sing for us. Original plan was to get to the METROPOLITAN
ROOM for their party, but it was already 1:15 am when we left, and
Daniel needed to catch a subway train to Queens before 1:30 am or
wait 40 minutes for the next one, and I needed to get to 14th Street
to catch a bus at 1:38 am or wait an hour for the next one.
Big thank you to Nancy Witter and husband for the free drink they
bought me at the bar near the end of the show (actually 2 drinks -
they treated Daniel, too!). We were low on cash and saving our last
shekels for that AFTER PARTY "tower" treat. Sorry I didn't hang around
to give a hug and big thanks - I was trying figure out how to negotiate
getting back to our table while carrying a "cosmo" and my Bicardi
& Diet coke. Every try to carry a cosmo through a crowded room, down
a small flight of stairs? With one "bum" knee?
Same thing goes to the many people I didn't get to
talk to personally at the MAC AWARDS - here's the deal: My knee
works OK nearly all the time, but in a crowded room with lots of
chair, table and human legs sticking out in the aisles, I am truly
afraid of tripping, and falling, and re-injuring the knee. So I
like to keep my balance by holding on to table tops and chair backs
as I walk - once in "open country" my fears are gone. So in a crowd
I tend to stay put or at least limit my wanderings.
THIS JUST IN: Brandon Cutrell and Julie Reyburn have been added to
the cast of The Broadway Musicals of 1965 to be presented on Monday,
May 12th at 8:00 pm at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC -

Congrats to piano-man Tedd Firth and wife - Tedd stopped by our table
before the MAC AWARDS show (he was there to play for Maureen McGovern)
and could not resist showing us a picture (on his iPhone) of their
new baby daughter (just a week old) - seated of course at a baby grand
piano! He said she's got great vocals as well.
I was at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM last night for Matt Leahy's "A Man
Walked Into a Bar" show at 7:00 pm, and I hope he brings this show
back pronto. Matt confirmed once again my firm belief that he is one
of the top entertainers, story-tellers, singers and writers on the
NYC cabaret scene. And Jeff Waxman is one of the most skillful of
arrangers/accompanists in town as well. What an enjoyable show - with
nary a dull moment, lots of "story songs" from the likes of Jason
Robert Brown, Harry Chapin, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and more.
And where else in town will you hear the Davis/Moore song "Green Door"
and Hayward's "Nights in White Satin"? Truly an evening to remember.
Well, I sort of "rambled on" today - but as you can see, I'm back
to good health and rarin' to go. I will be announcing a few more performers
for the 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW over to weekend to the membership and in
Monday's newsletter. By the way, don't skim over the news today -
there are some real nuggets imbedded in the normal news items.
And that is just about the way it was.
