TODAY'S FEATURE STORIES
"BREAST IN SHOW" A BENEFIT CABARET SERIES
MacAnn Music, Helen's, Raise the Bar Productions and Diane Trinkaus
(an 18 year breast cancer survivor!) are proud to present a benefit
cabaret series for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF - http://www.bcrfcure.org/
). Each of these 8 Monday and Tuesday night shows in June will feature
one or more of cabaret's brightest talents, many of whom are multiple
award-winning performers. The shows begin at 7:00 pm (June 5th show
begins at 9:30 pm) at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169
Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
).
Performers scheduled to appear are: Tom Andersen (June
4th), Mark Nadler (June 5th), Carolyn Montgomery, Brian Gens and
Steven Wing (June 11th), Colm Reilly (June 12th), Lina Koutrakos
(June 18th), Barbara Brussell and Ritt Henn (June 19th), Leslie
Anderson and Jay Rogers (June 25th), Rick Jensen and Jeanne MacDonald
(June 26th).
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast
cancer and over 40,000 women will die of breast cancer in the U.S.
this year! The mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
(BCRF) is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in
our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical
and genetic research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing
public awareness about good breast health. BCRF is an independent
501 (c) (3) not-for profit organization.
There is a $25 tax-deductible donation and a $15 food/beverage
minimum. Helen's has a full dinner menu available and a warm and
welcoming atmosphere.
KAREN OBERLIN ADDED TO BIRTHDAY SHOW LINEUP!
Another one of my favorite cabaret performers, Karen Oberlin, has
agreed to be part of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE's 17th Birthday Party.
Karen's 2006 show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM garnered her a 2007 MAC
AWARD nomination and I counted it as one of the top shows seen al
year. In addition to Karen, I have booked other great performers for
this year's show - some newcomers along with some of the top names
in cabaret.
Other performers scheduled to appear are multi-award
winning Lennie Watts, the delightful Alice Frazier from Erie PA,
2007 MAC & BISTRO Award winner Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari from
Michigan, Bruce Clough - popular in theater & cabaret in Philadelphia,
2007 MAC STANDUP COMEDY Award winner Michael Brill, 2007 MAC AWARD
FEMALE & MALE DEBUT winners Esther Beckman & Rob Langeder, the legendary
Karen Saunders and one of NYCs favorites, Sue Matsuki (who is helping
us with the program planning). Steven Ray Watkins has agreed to
serve this year as musical director. Piano-bar entertainer David
Pellegrene will be at the piano before the start of the show, starting
around 6:00 pm, to add a note of festivity to the evening as attendees
are being seated.
If you have not yet ordered your tickets, you better
act fast. Tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on July 6th only went on sale around the 1st of May, but already
70 of the 100 available seats have been sold! At this rate we expect
to be sold out by the 1st of June!
An important part of the show will be the presentation
of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS, created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic
designer Jeff Matson. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C.
Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector
Coris (who will both be attending the show). This year we will honor
two more very worthy recipients. Each has been an inspiration, a
resource and a good friend to cabaret performers: Collette Black
(booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best
friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to
perform at the show!
In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be announcing
the recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to a
deserving cabaret songwriter. More on this to come.
I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will
attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such
an affair, so try not to miss it. METROPOLITAN ROOM manager Lennie
Watts and owners Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful
in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.
Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008
Member the ticket price drops to $25. But wait! There is even more:
If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time,
the cost is $20 for the ticket and $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a
GOLD membership - $40 or $95 COMBO price (saves you $15!) (the club's
standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price -
applies).
Just go to the website and click on the line that
says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW!
Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty
clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait for a PayPal invoice/conformation
- I don't want you to send in a payment unless I actually have a
seat for you. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in
your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your
payment is received. Orders are limited to 4 per person.
If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming
event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate
Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE
IS LIMITED - 6 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). For more information and to
reserve your ad slot, go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

NO CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ISSUE MEMORIAL DAY
Since Memorial Day always falls on a Monday, and since Monday is usually
the day we send out our Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (what
else?) there will be no issue sent to our subscribers on Monday, May
28th. The normal Monday news items will be combined into the Thursday

SIDEBAR AD SALE ENDS JUME 30th - 1 WEEK FREE WITH 3 PAID
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself
with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as
6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics).
In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show
off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the
4th week is free (no discounts on Side-Bar ads). There are a few rules,
and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run
each week and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course
they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any
ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of
the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed
top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you
receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund
if all slots are already sold out. Side-bar deal only through Saturday,
July 7, 2007.
NO SIDE BAR ADS AVAILABLE UNTIL WEEK OF JUNE 10th
- your 4-week sidebar ad will run through July 7th.

HERE & THERE
Just in case you were planning on attending the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY
of CABARET HOTINE ONLINE, please note that as of noon today only 30
of the 100 seats available remain unsold. I have two more performer
slots to fill - and if both parties accept my invitation to perform,
it will make for a super-special show indeed. Stay tuned - and don't
be left out, order your tickets today!
One would think that being on a high floor of a building that noised
from the street would be muffled at worst, but today they seem to
be tearing up the street below for some reason, and the noise of the
jackhammers has become unbearable. Of course there are several other
tall (10 story or more) buildings around here, so the sound echos
quite a bit and is apparently trapped between the buildings. So, this
issue may be just a bit shorter than usual - unless it stops soon.
I was hoping to announce a new section to the website today, but a
few details remain to be worked out, so check the website in the next
few days - or check out our next issue. I am trying to line up a special
sponsor for this section - if you are interested drop me a line for
details.
Here's another update on our "New York City Picks" newsletter. Due
to an apparent lack of interest (only 35 subscriptions received) we
have discontinued our special NYC PICKS e-mails, at least until 100
subscriptions were received. But I will keep the e-mail address on
a special list in case more subscriptions are received. I have merged
the PICKS into the regular newsletters - at the bottom of each issue
- when there shows in the NYC area that I want to bring to the special
attention of NYers. Since the newsletter is sent to over 2,700 readers
all over the world, we chose the bottom of the newsletter for this
information so that readers not especially interested in NYC events
need not be offended (we get many complaints that the newsletter is
"too New Yorkish.") I continue to solicit subscribers to the special
PICKS list, and once we reach 100 the special mailings will be reactivated.
If you want to add your name to this special subscriber list, just
go to the website, click on the NYC AREA NEWS button and on that pages
is a button marked NYC PICKS which leads to a page where you can sign
up.
I haven't mentioned it for a few issues, but I indeed continue to
do a lot of off-line writing about the "hidden side of cabaret" -
honest and balanced reporting about the secrets behind as well as
the history of who and why things in this wonderful art form have
sometimes been bent and twisted by a few folks seeking their own personal
power rather than the good of the community. Stay tuned.
LOOKING FOR BIRTHDAY PROGRAM BOOKLET ADVERTISERS
If you cannot attend the July 6th event you might want to run an ad
in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6
page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED). Perhaps you have an upcoming event
after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate our
JEFF MATSON award winners, Collette Black and Joe Regan Jr., or simply
want to congratulate our newsletter/website for 17 years of serving
the cabaret community. A program ad may be just the thing for you!
Not only will the booklet be presented to the 100+ folks attending
the show, but a pdf of the booklet will be available for download
on the website after the 6th of July. For more information and to
reserve your ad slot, CLICK HERE: http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
Well, the jackhammer folks apparently have taken their lunch break,
but it is too late for me to write more and still get this issue out
in timely fashion. I will have to write the other items I was planning
to write about in the Thursday issue. At least I had time to add about
16 brand new news items to this issue before the noise began.
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as
long as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed
articles on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
AROUND THE TOWN - NYC NIGHTLIFE & CABARET
Some "last chances:"
Phil Bond's autobiographical "My Friend, The Cat"
show has its last performance next week Friday at THE WEST BANK
CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909
- http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
) at 8:00 pm. Funny, entertaining, and at times very touching story
of a boy who becomes a man while spending less than a dozen years
with a very wise (and clever) feline partner.
2007 MAC & BISTRO AWARD winner Kristine Zbornik has
just one more night, Monday, May 21st at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34
West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) of her wild, zany and totally funny show. I can't say anything
more except you simply must catch this one, it the show isn't sold
out already!
Tanya Moberly has one more performances of her amazing
series of song collections on Fridays, May 18th & 25th at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
). In the style of the great Mabel Mercer, with nary a line of "patter"
Ms. Moberly simply sings some songs, and in so doing reveals more
of herself and more of each song that dozens of paragraphs of mere
words could do. Powerful and captivating. Not to be missed.
Adriane Tolsch has just one more show of her very
funny and constantly changing show "None of Your Damn Business!"
at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438
- http://www.rosesturn.com/
) on Fridays, May 25th at 7:00 pm. She tore the roof off the cabaret
room at DON'T TELL MAMA at my SWEET SIXTEEN anniversary show last
year. Her show takes a comic look at "growing older" and you will
discover that those aren't wrinkles on your face, they are "laugh
lines."
Award-winning vocalist Stevie Holland as just one
show left of her May series at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd
Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on Tuesday, May 29th. She is accompanied by Kris Davis on piano,
Chris Van Voorst Van Beest on bass and Jeff Davis on drums. With
arrangements by award winning composer Gary William Friedman, the
program will consist of classics, standards and original songs,
many from her recent CD release More Than Words Can Say.
Steven Brinberg is "Simply Barbra" tonight at 9:30
pm - one night only this month - at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West
22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
). Steven Brinberg wows audiences around the World with his award
winning impersonation of the Diva with the perfect manicure!
The Ross Patterson Little Big Band continues its monthly
gig at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on Friday, June 1st at 10:30 pm - the final show of the series
before he takes a break for the summer. Accomplished pianist and
arranger Ross Patterson lends his eclectic taste and style to standards
and his own original tunes. Joined by Aaron Heick on sax, Antoine
Silverman on violin, Tom Hubbard on bass and Eric Halvorson on drums,
The Little Big Band promises an evening full of energy, great melodies
and a touch of humor.
Currently living (and performing) in Wisconsin, Annie
Hughes returns to NYC and HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE
(169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
) for one night only, Thursday, May 31st at 9:30 pm with her acclaimed
show "Back...and Forth." Musical director is Daryl Kojak. This show
sold out last time around - get on the phone today if you want a
reservation.
After a seven-month run at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd
Street, NYC - 212-362-2511 - http://www.Triadnyc.com/
), the hit show "When The Lights Go On Again" featuring songs of
World War II will be closing on Sunday, May 27th. The show is currently
presented on Friday nights at 7:00 pm and Saturdays & Sundays at
3:00 pm. "When The Lights Go On Again" an Original Cast Recording
is now available online through Footlight Records and CDBaby.com.
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
And that is just about the way it was.
