HERE & THERE
We finally had what could be called a real snowstorm during the night,
but at least outside my window what fell was less than an inch, hardly
something to get concerned about. But with temperatures back in the
very low 20s (f) the snow will be around a while and I will have to
be a bit careful later heading to the 2007 NY NIGHTLIFE AWARDS show
tonight at THE TOWN HALL. You see, there is hardly enough snow on the
sidewalks to shovel and it is too frozen to the walks to simply sweep
away. But it is bright and sunny today and maybe the sunshine will do
its thing and melt the stuff.
I took the day off yesterday - just got caught up on
my e-mails, dawdled a little on the computer, but mostly sat back
and watched TV and did a lot of snoozing. Saturday was a far different
story, since I was actually out of the house at 9:00 am and off to
Manhattan and DON'T TELL MAMA to be part of the 2007 MAC AWARDS Eligibility
Committee. A lot of the work was done over the past few weeks by e-mail
so the Saturday meeting was mainly to tie up some loose ends. The
committee goes over each nomination to make sure that the rules are
followed. Actually cabaret people are a pretty honest lot so much
of the meeting was spent trying to decide if a particular show was
in the correct category. Was it a revue or was it a vocal group? Was
it musical comedy or just vocalist? Was it in a "major" category or
a regular category. Most importantly, no one was moved to a different
section without notification and they can appeal the change - and
that is why there is one more meeting before the preliminary MAC ballot
is completed and mailed (scheduled to go out on February 17th in case
you want to help stuff envelopes).
Everyone on the committee was thrilled by the large
number of folks who submitted themselves in nomination - far more
than last year I am told. It looks like cabaret performers (the area
our committee covered) are coming back to MAC in droves! I anticipate
a great MAC AWARDS night if this trend continues! And great it should
be - the newly formed MAC Board of Directors seems to be going all
out to deal with and correct many of the items members complained
about last year - it can't all be changes overnight, but it truly
seems that new goals are being set to make MAC into the organization
it was meant to be. Stay tuned.
Because I took yesterday off, I had to get up extra early this morning
to work on this issue, and as soon as it is on its way I will be nap
time for me - I have to get a good rest for the big event tonight at
THE TOWN HALL. The final lineup of announced performers and presenters
can be found elsewhere in this issue, but I know that Scott Siegel has
a few more special surprise guests lined up. I can't wait.
One special mention to all cabaret lovers. I made a
special point a few issues back about the fact the cabaret needs to
present itself better to the public. No one in this town is doing
a better job of promoting the art and artists of cabaret than Scott
Siegel (ably and fully assisted by his lovely wife Barbara). They
have brought to the attention of NYC audiences many of the cabaret
performers in this town not just with the NIGHTLIFE AWARD event, but
also in their BROADWAY BY THE YEAR and BROADWAY UNPLUGGED shows at
THE TOWN HALL. All of us who love cabaret owe these folks our support
and I hope as many cabaret lovers as possible will attend tonight's
show - and also sign up for their other series. And unlike other events
that showcase cabaret talent, all the performers in their BY THE YEAR
and UNPLUGGED shows actually get paid! That alone is enough to cause
all cabaret lovers to go out and purchase those tickets and multi-show
subscriptions. Every Broadway-themed show has included in their casts
not just musical theater performers, but also several performers known
primarily for their cabaret work. Bravo!
See you all tonight I hope - some seats in all price
ranges are still available - and what a lineup of talent!
Well, it is 12:30 pm and I have been at this for nearly 7 hours and
I need a break -all the stuff I still wanted to say will be in the MIDWEEK
issue which should go out on Thursday as usual.
THIS & THAT
I've added this new section to mention news items that come my way but
are either too short for a regular placement, unconnected to any specific
cabaret event, or of a general cabaret nature. For example:
CABARET IN FLORIDA IS A FAMILY AFFAIR - Big Band/Jazz vocalist Lorri
Hafer will be doing a concert in Melbourne, FL on Friday, February 2nd
from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the BREVARD MUSEUM OF ART AND SCIENCE (1463
Highland Avenue, Melbourne, FL - 321-242-0737 - http://www.artandscience.org/
). Lorri's husband Mike will be at the piano and her son Paul on acoustic
bass. The concert will spotlight the MUSIC OF YOUR LIFE songs from the
1930s. The concert is $10 per person, but is free for members of the
museum.
ONE & ONLY RUBY RIMS ONE NIGHT ONLY - Cabaret icon Ruby Rims will present
an evening of cabaret at the JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH (55 Washington Square
South, NYC - 212-477-0351 - http://www.judson.org/
) one night only on Saturday, February 10th at 9:00 pm. Musical director
is John McMahon. There is a suggested donation of $10. For reservations
or more information go to http://www.judson.org/
.
GILLETT REPRISES ACCLAIMED CABARET SHOW IN NJ - Eric Michael Gillett
will present two performances of his show, HOOK LINE & SINGER, at the
NEW JERSEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (One Center Street, Newark, NJ - 888-466-5722
- http://www.njpac.org/
) on Saturday, February 10th at 7:00 & 9:30 pm. The show is a reprise
of the sold-out show Eric performed with his band in NYC. If you believe
that the Great American Songbook didn't stop growing 50 years ago and
you will want to join Eric for a rockin' good time. Easy transportation
from NYC via PATH and shuttle bus. Call or see the website for ticket
prices - and directions.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAREN MACK! - This Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at THE
METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) the fabulous duo of Karen Mack and Michael Holland present another
episode of their hit show GASHOLE: Hole-O-Matic! The All-Request Show,
where Mack & Holland hurtle through as many tunes as the audience can
pick as fast as they can whether they know them or not. But this week
I am sure one of the requests will be "Happy Birthday" for Karen, and
I can't wait to hear Michael's arrangement. SEE FULL STORY ON THE WEBSITE

issues", a womanizing dentist, and a nice, but commitment-phobic Jersey

NEW CD FEATURES THE SONGS OF BOB LEVY
Bob Levy's CD "Out In The Cold" features songs "like they used to write!"
Bob is an award-winning songwriter on the East Coast. "Out In the Cold"
is his first jazz CD after more than ten years of writing country songs
for many Nashville artists. Bob went back to his jazz/cabaret roots
for this exciting CD of 'New Jazz Standards' that evokes memories of
Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme classics. Rich ballads, romantic bossa novas
and swing. Bob Levy's songs are performed on the CD by the wonderful
new jazz vocalist, Perry Danos. Joining Perry on this CD is Shelly Miller
whose beautiful, silky voice is reminiscent of Grammy winner Norah Jones.
Bob's special guest is Dane Vannatter, 2007 Nightlife Awards finalist
and Back Stage Magazine's 2006 Bistro Award Winner. Dane has been performing
Bob's songs, "What Are We Doing Here?" and "Out In the Cold" in New
York City and Boston clubs. "Out In The Cold" is now available on CDbaby,
iTunes and MP3 Extension. Visit Bob's website at http://www.silkrivermusic.com/

SUPER SIDEBAR ADS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE
The current REGULAR SIDE-BAR ads are seen only on the opening (home)
page. Several folks have asked if there was a way that their side-bar
ad could be seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over
5000 pages on the site it would be impossible, but I have been revising
and recoding all the "index" and all the "most visited pages" as well
as all new pages of news, reviews and other items to make it possible
for a side-bar ad (in the right column on the pages "above the fold"
except for the opening page) to be seen on hundreds of pages - all the
time. These SUPER SIDE-BAR ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular
side-bar ads are available for $125 per week (membership discounts allowed).
There is a 2-week minimum. After 2 weeks continuous, the cost drops
to $100 per week. If the banner runs for 9 weeks, the 10th week is free.
Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. Banner size is
180 x 360 pxls at 72 dpi. Gif, and Jpg banners accepted (no "flash"
banners at this time). Banners will appear in the right sidebar at the
top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany"
position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering
mentioned in both the MONDAY and MIDWEEK issues of CABARET HOTLINE and
the both ads will be featured in rotation on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
weblog pages as well. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the
top of every page on the website for details on all sizes, styles and
specs.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, ON THE BLOG AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those
annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds,
etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite"
things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format
(the format I write these issues in and use for the website).
CABARET ARTISTS APPEARING AROUND THE WORLD:
Many more items can be found in the CABARET NEWS pages in all areas
of the world we cover on the website. In an effort to keep these listings
of reasonable length in the newsletter, we have provided links to a
complete listing of all venues appears on the website according to geographical
area. (Please let me know if you would prefer all the listings for all
areas be sent you rather than just these links.)

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
Please drop me a line regarding your thoughts about the revised format
for the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. By eliminating the listings
section (just including links to the listings on the website) I am able
to include more news items and still send out a shorted issue. But you
might prefer the former style. I won't know unless you let me know.
For you "bottom readers:" I said I was going to quit worrying about
finances, and I am doing my best (my landlord doesn't think so, but
that's another story). Please pass the word that the best place to advertise
a cabaret show or other cabaret related item (like t-shirts) is CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE - it is the banners I have sold the past two weeks that
as kept my fridge stocked. And pass the word that the twice-weekly 2500-subscriber
newsletter, the 5000+ page website, the almost daily weblog postings,
and the items and articles on cabaret found here are all made possible
by donations from readers and cabaret supporters like you. A $20 donation
(less than $2 per month) is all that it takes to become a supporting
member - and your membership donations do so much to encourage me to
continue this work of love. If you have not yet joined, please show
your appreciation and support by doing so today - click on the button
marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for details.
Its only a few bucks, it will only take a few minutes, and believe me,
it will mean so much. Thanks.
And that is just about the way it was.
