SAD NEWS - Zeyn ALI - January 29, 1981 - January 16, 2007
Singer/dancer/actor/songwriter Zeyn Ali, aged 25, was taken from us
by a tragic accident on January 16th, 2007 in Vancouver, B.C. Zeyn leaves
behind his mother Shameine Ali, his brother Zaven Ali, his extended
family in Trinidad & Tobabo and the United States and countless friends
in the theatre and music fraternity all over the world.
Originally from Trinidad, Ali moved to Vancouver with
his mother and younger brother in 1989, leaving dad, Nello, behind.
The tall, young man, who was blessed with good looks, boundless energy
and star presence, originally dreamed of being a professional figure
skater, but on seeing a musical theater performance in 1994, Zeyn
revised his goals. After graduating high school at age 18, Zeyn came
to NYC to study musical theater.
I first met Zeyn soon after he moved to NYC. His mother,
Shameine, was a subscriber to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and had written
asking if there were any cabaret opportunities for her son while he
was studying here. We recommended DON'T TELL MAMA and she and Zeyn's
brother Zaven flew down from Canada to attend his NYC cabaret debut.
His talent and charisma was unbounded, and he was cheered on by his
fellow students and the many friends he had quickly attracted in his
short time in the city, plus rave reviews. Other events and appearances
followed. He could often be found in the piano bar at MAMA'S taking
his turn at the open mic, to the delight of the audiences - and was
a favorite of many of the waiters and pianists.
Soon after his graduation he was booked to perform in
a summer stock theater in southern New Jersey and quite by accident
I was walking past the Port Authority Bus Terminal just as he was
getting out of a taxi with all his belongings to catch the bus to
his first job. Lucky for him because there was no one else around
to help with all his many bags and I "stood guard" as he sought out
the assistance of a porter. Except for a few e-mails, plus some messages
passed along by his mother from time to time, we sort of lost touch.
In 2002, Zeyn was cast in the starring role in a tour
of the show JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (the very
show that he saw 10 years earlier in Vancouver that changed the course
of his life) and later in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. He traveled with
the company for two years throughout the US and Canada, ending the
tour in 2004. He was preparing to embark in a few days to serve as
principal singer on a cruise line. He had also begun work on a CD
of his original songs.
Some of his many friends have established a web page
at http://myspace.com/zeynali
which includes mpg's of several of his songs.
My heart goes out to a very loving mother and brother
in their loss, and to the hundreds of folks this young man knew and
was loved by and who will sorely miss him.
HERE & THERE
I am a little late in getting this issue out today - some important
personal matters came up earlier this morning that had to be dealt with
and I apologize for the delay. I should also note that some AOL subscribers
might find their issues arrive late in the day instead of around noon
on a regular basis. AOL continues to block the newsletters when sent
in a stream, so I instead send out small batches of between 20 and 40
e-mail addresses throughout the afternoon. And last issue, one small
batch got an issue of the week before in error and received the correct
issue the following morning - so sorry.
We have also been getting several issues back each week
because some folks have installed "spam blocking" software and neglected
to allow CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE a "free pass" through by including
our e-mail address on their "white list." If someone else in your
organization is in charge of the "spam blocking" software, please
advise them of this situation. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is only sent
to actual subscribers - folks who signed on to receive these newsletters
twice a week. And we would never include inappropriate material in
the newsletters - although some blockers automatically exclude messages
that contain words like "gay" "lesbian" "breast" etc.
I am working on my "TOP 20 SHOWS" list for 2006 - please remember I
will only include performances I have actually seen, and of course cannot
include shows that originally appeared in 2005 and were repeated in
2006. Hopefully this will be ready over the weekend and appear on Monday.
Problem is trimming back to 20 from the list of about 30 I have placed
on my initial picks list. I may have to compromise to 25.
I made it to the MAC Post-Holiday Party at THE TRIAD on Monday as planned.
As mentioned in the last issue, I could only stay about 20 minutes because
I had promised to attend a show at MAMA'S at 6:30 pm. It was a simple
"meet & greet" affair - no speeches, just a lot of good friendly smiles
and chat. I understand that by the time 8:00 pm rolled around and the
party had to break up, over 100 folks had dropped by, lots of members
joined and rejoined, and many fliers and post cards had been distributed.
More about MAC below, but what about that new TRIAD! The club has been
totally redecorated and it now has sort of a "jewel box" look to it.
A proscenium has been built to frame the stage, and to my eye it appeared
that the stage has been lowered and extended a bit more into the room.
You really have to see this space - such an unbelievable change!
Now a few more comments about MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets),
continuing out comments of the past several issues (hope I am not boring
everyone).
The response to my previous articles of the past two
weeks or so has been a bit disconcerting, I guess because I have not
made the thrust of my main point clear. And strangely enough some
have even questioned my motives in my apparent change of opinion about
MAC. The point I have been trying to make these past few weeks is
that I have noticed some major changes in the way the MAC Board is
facing the problems it has experienced. A year and a half ago the
attitude seemed to be "you elected us, and we now make the decisions
- like it or lump it." The new attitude seems to be: "we want to know
what you think and what you feel and we want MAC to be what our members
expect it to be."
Several factors figured in to my change of view. First,
I was approached over the summer by some people who were thinking
of running for the open slots on the MAC Board. They seemed genuinely
interested in hearing my views on what changes would be needed to
unify the NYC cabaret community and restore MAC to being a moving
force to promote the art of cabaret. A few additional discussions
followed and I was impressed by the honesty and true desire on the
part of these parties to turn things around.
Not to say they immediately "bowed to my desires" and
accepted all my suggestions. But it was the attitude I detected of
a true interest in making things whole again. And when these folks
did get elected (lets say that everyone that ran for office was elected,
since so few folks decided to run), the discussions continued - and
real positive steps were taken almost immediately.
The second factor was the events surrounding the memorial
service for Dottie Burman. Because of subway delays I arrived just
as the service started and since the room was full I stood against
the wall on one side of the room - from which position I could see
just about every person attending. And seated in the room were cabaret
folks from all sides of the "MAC situation" spectrum. The cabaret
community was united - celebrating a very sad affair and yet celebrating
in their one-ship as performers and lovers of the art of cabaret.
And it was beautiful!
Then, just a few days later I was at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM for the celebration of the life of Richard Hendrickson - many
different faces but the same type of gathering of people who are in
this business we call cabaret. I asked myself why, if we can be united
in commemorating a death, can't we be unified in celebrating life
- and celebrating our common love for an art form we hold so dear?
Finally, just a few days after that I found myself standing
next to the one person who I feel is the only person in the world
with more passion for the art and artists of cabaret than I hold.
It seems we both had been struck by the events of the previous week
in the same way - and we were both nearly moved to tears by our common
wish that somehow the NYC cabaret community could be reunited.
And this was the catalyst to my change of attitude.
Is there a secret agenda I am following? Well, it is no secret - I
want to see MAC once again becoming a force and influence, as well
as a resource for cabaret - performers, cabaret lovers, and yes even
cabaret owners and managers. I believe it can be done. I believe that
the current board of directors wants this to happen.
Unfortunately not everyone shares my view. There are
several who want to continue to blame "the sins of the fathers" on
the current "generation" of MAC Board members. There are folks who
are still holding grudges about events (real or imagined) that happened
2 to 10 years ago, as though the same folks who they dealt with then
are still "running the show!" I even ran into one former member a
few weeks back who said he hated MAC but couldn't remember why!
So here is my challenge: I re-joined MAC the other night.
I joined because I wanted to show the MAC Board (and you, my readers
and subscribers) that I firmly believe a new wind is blowing - and
that real positive steps are being taken to correct mistakes, oversights
and shortcomings of previous years (some real, some imagined). And
I want as many NYC area cabaret performers as possible to honestly
consider joining me this week in joining MAC as well. Certainly there
are issues still to be resolved, changes still to be made. But I am
sure that when those currently serving on the board see that the steps
they have already taken have support (through a reunifying of the
community) they will continue to take the daring steps that still
need to be made.
And I assure you as well that I will be here to cheer
them on (and jeer them as well when I feel that they are not fulfilling
their promises and carrying out their duties to the membership). The
time for bickering and complaining is over - it is time to get on
board and make this thing work.
And so I am making some kind of button that I shall
wear. It is going to say three simple words: MAC IS ME! and the next
time someone says something bad about MAC I am going to remind them
that MAC consists of hundreds of members - not 12 people - and these
hundreds of members are all dedicated to the art of cabaret, and it
they should be united with us in this effort if they love this art
form. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I hope others
will follow me and make their own "MAC IS ME!" button - and I hope
MAC's leaders will realize as well that MAC is not 12 people but hundreds.
Now I may have made a "tactical error" in taking this stance. You see,
since I started this series of articles, only one person has joined
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as a member - I don't know if there is a connection
between the two items, but my funds are again near zero. But I feel
so passionately that we need to get together as a cabaret community,
to make MAC work, to make cabaret a moving force in the live entertainment
arts, that if CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE must close down, so be it.
But as in all my life, I honestly and with complete
faith feel in my heart that if I remain true to what I believe, and
live up to what I stand for, that things will work out for the good
of all. My "hidden agenda" is the same as my "revealed agenda." Not
personal honor, not riches, not the "easy road." It is to be true
to what I believe, and to make full use of the talents I have been
blessed with to support and nurture those I love.
I think I have said all I need to say. I await your
comments.
CODA: The top item in this issue (SAD NEWS) came in as I was composing
the remarks about MAC. I was truly saddened by the events surrounding
the death of someone so young, so talented, and so passionate about
performing. I take pride in the fact that I took the time to introduce
Zeyn to the art of cabaret - and to witness his performances and the
joy he derived from them. This event may have added to the underlying
ideas of my remarks.
THIS & THAT
I've added this new section to mention news items that come my way but
unconnected to any specific cabaret event, or at least of a more general
cabaret nature. For example:
For those making dinner reservations at NINO'S TUSCANY (117 West 58th
Street, NYC - 212-757-8630 - http://www.ninostuscany.com/
) here is some additional information: Nino, the host and owner, would
like to send a glass of house wine to those who are having dinner in
the dining room on February 8th, 9th and 10th, with his compliments.
All you have to do is tell the waiter "I'm a friend of Jerry Scott."
For the men, jackets are required in the dining room. Ladies, dress
to impress. Reservations are filling up quickly so please call in advance.
Tell them you are coming to see Jerry Scott for the best tables.
NOW FOR MORE NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where
guests change weekly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once
in the newsletter. The CABARET NEWS pages on the website are updated
regularly, and cover all areas of the world.

else - at least until today! lease note that in most instances more

SUPER SIDEBAR ADS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE
The current REGULAR SIDE-BAR ads are seen only on the opening (home)
page. Several folks have asked if there was a way that their side-bar
ad could be seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over
5000 pages on the site it would be impossible, but I have been revising
and recoding all the "index" and all the "most visited pages" as well
as all new pages of news, reviews and other items to make it possible
for a side-bar ad (in the right column on the pages "above the fold"
except for the opening page) to be seen on hundreds of pages - all the
time. These SUPER SIDE-BAR ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular
side-bar ads are available for $125 per week (membership discounts allowed).
There is a 2-week minimum. After 2 weeks continuous, the cost drops
to $100 per week. If the banner runs for 9 weeks, the 10th week is free.
Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. Banner size is
180 x 360 pxls at 72 dpi. Gif, and Jpg banners accepted (no "flash"
banners at this time). Banners will appear in the right sidebar at the
top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany"
position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering
mentioned in both the MONDAY and MIDWEEK issues of CABARET HOTLINE and
the both ads will be featured in rotation on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
weblog pages as well. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the
top of every page on the website for details on all sizes, styles and
specs.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send

for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be
sure that these discounts will be honored.
Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release
with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of
those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead
to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings
request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in
and use for the website).
