MAC AWARDS DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MONDAY JANUARY 22nd
MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) wants to give performers more time to submit their MAC Award applications, so the deadline has been extended and has announced that all applications received on or before Monday January 22 will be considered.

Note that this year, artists do not have to be MAC members to be eligible; however, for non-MAC-members, only work done in MAC member clubs may be considered for an Award. The rules are spelled out in greater detail on the web site, as is a list of member clubs. Also nominations are being accepted in all categories, and MAC members will be voting for all nominees on the final ballots.

You can use these links or find all information and forms on the MAC web site http://www.macnyc.com/ .

Please note that I have been asked to join the MAC AWARD Eligibility Committee and if you have any questions, please drop me a line - if you wish I will keep your messages confidential. Any complaints? Same deal - send them in and I will present your cause if necessary.

HERE & THERE

LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!
A few weeks back I received word that all MAC voters would be voting on all categories on the MAC Ballot this year, rather than select committees choosing winners as was done last year. I was so overjoyed I decided to re-join MAC and to even take part in MAC as a volunteer. I even went so far as to urge all who had left MAC to rejoin and take part in the organization. Someone even sent me $50 towards a MAC membership and I had planned to attend the MAC party next week at THE TRIAD and give my own check to rejoin.

As a result I was asked to be part of the MAC AWARD ELIGIBILITY COMMITTEE to check on all applicants to make sure that they were placed in the right categories and if they met eligibility rules. I assumed that I would be dealing with all applications and all categories and that all would be listed on the PRELIMINARY BALLOT as was done for all the past years except last year.

I guess I learned a valuable lesson the hard way - I read the MAC APPLICATION FORM and jumped to a wrong conclusion - and do I feel stupid! I should have read the MAC ELIGIBILITY RULES instead.

What I didn't realize was the there would be two other committees (NOMINATING COMMITTEES instead of ELIGIBILITY COMMITTEES) to cover the Jazz and Comedy sections and that the choices of these committee would only appear on the FINAL BALLOT and that the MAC membership would not be permitted to vote on these categories on the PRELIMINARY BALLOT.

(For many years MAC had NOMINATING COMMITTEES only for the SONG OF THE YEAR, CD and SPECIAL MATERIAL nominations since these were non-performance categories.)

In years past, there was one eligibility committee that covered performances in all venues and of all styles. It worked extremely well for more nearly 20 years and I see no reason why it cannot work again. There is an extreme overlap currently in NYC live performance venues - there are cabaret shows presented in traditional jazz and comedy venues, there are comics performing in traditional cabaret and jazz venues, and there are jazz performers appearing in traditional cabaret and jazz venues! To eliminate MAC members from making choices for jazz and comedy acts on the PRELIMINARY BALLOT is the same as making jazz and comedy as "a second class" venue. Instead of encouraging MAC members to attend shows at these venues, MAC says in effect that only an elite committee of "experts" are eligible to choose performances for nomination - even jazz and comedy performers are not good enough to make these choices.

MAC members see plenty of jazz and comedy performances in the cabaret venues - and many MAC members go to shows at traditional jazz & comedy venues as well. Some well known, major jazz and comedy performers regularly perform in cabaret rooms. To eliminate MAC members from making choices for jazz and comedy acts on the PRELIMINARY BALLOT is the same as making jazz and comedy as "a second class" venue. Instead MAC should be encouraging all MAC members to attend shows at all types of venues.

After all, these are the MAC awards and should be awarded to folks the MAC members nominate and ultimately pick. Jazz and comedy performers should join MAC and promote their shows through discounts, mailings, etc. to all MAC members if they chose to nominate themselves for a MAC award on both ballots.

If MAC is to gain members, it needs to let every member take part in every phase of the election process. The jazz and comedy performers must be assured that they have the same chance for nomination as the cabaret performers. This is the problem that was happening before the nomination process was changed a few years ago when a "screening" committee trimmed the nominees without presenting all the names to the membership. Performers felt they were excluded from the list year after year with no reason given. Lets give all jazz and comedy performers the same opportunity to be on the final ballot as we give cabaret performers. This is the only way that these performers will feel inclined to take part and join as members and voters. Let's not treat jazz and comedy performers as "second class" members who need to be "pre-screened" before they get on the ballot.

Let us not ignore the original reason for the MAC AWARDS - to encourage members to attend cabaret and other live entertainment events by setting up a preliminary ballot covering all fields and urging members to see the pre-nominated shows on January & February (normally slow months for cabaret) where shows of the previous year were reprised with special discounts to MAC voters.

I urge the MAC Board of Directors to merge the three MAC eligibility committees and place all eligible in all areas on the PRELIMINARY BALLOT as was done in the past (except for last year). And if merger is impractical, just call all three ELIGIBILITY COMMITTEES and place all live performance categories placed in nomination on the PRELIMINARY BALLOT. MAC should be about unity, fairness and community. Lets bring all together instead of codifying differences between performance styles.

Finally, I am not the type of person who says "my way or no way" and I still plan to be at the party at THE TRIAD next week as planned. I intend to sign on as a member at that time as well (the check is already drawn and signed - and I now urge all former MAC members to rejoin as well. Let's build a new MAC together and turn it from an "AWARDS Obsessed" organization to a vital, respected and active organization to promote both live-performance artists and venues in New York City. There is a lot of work to do - and a lot of folks need to volunteer to make it work. As a prominent cabaret critic remarked to me the other day, MAC is not going to change from without - change can only happen from within. MAC has already take some steps to return to a sensible awards system for cabaret - lets join together to bring about correction and improvement in all areas.

In the Thursday issue I will outline some ideas I have about MAC - including some specific programs I would like MAC to consider. It is easy to criticize without making suggestions to improve. I don't intend to simply complain - I want to help make MAC better, for the ultimate good of live performance and to benefit both performers and venues. I hope that others in the press (some of whom have been treated poorly by MAC in the past) will also join me in this effort.

MORE HERE & THERE
Today is Martin Luther King Day here in the USA - an official Federal Holiday, and many federal, state and local government offices are closed, as well as many banks, schools, etc. In fact I considered sending out this issue on Tuesday, but so much of it was already written I decided to send it out today, knowing that many readers (those who receive their issues at work) will not be able to read it until Tuesday.

In addition, I was awake all night anyway so I worked on the newsletter until about 4:30 am, in between exchanging e-mails with Ricky Ritzel (see above). Plus, a good friend of mine has been "under the weather" for several weeks, and yesterday we decided together that it would be a good idea for him to check in at the emergency room at the nearby hospital to seek relief. He waited there for over three hours and finally saw a doctor and was given an appointment to return on Tuesday. He is without insurance so we have fingers crossed that the problem will turn out to be something easily (and inexpensively) corrected. But I am a worrier and so every time I tried to get some sleep my brain kicked into high gear with all sorts of ideas and thoughts. I know that around noon, when the newsletter is out, I will "crash" for my nap-time.

I have no show reservations for tonight but I want to get out to see a show somewhere, since I have been sitting at this computer now for about 18 hours straight. And I am famished - I somehow forgot to have dinner last night until too late (I try to eat no later than 9:00 pm).

I have some special reminders and invitations for you all.

Please join me tomorrow night - Tuesday January 16th at 8:00 pm for a musical tribute to the late Dottie Burman, hosted by Richard Skipper, at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ). There is just a $25 cover with a 2 drink minimum. All proceeds will be donated in Dottie's memory to THE CENTRAL PARK CONSERVANCY (http://www.centralparknyc.org/ ). The organizers are a little concerned at the low number of reservations so far, so ease their minds and phone in your reservations after 4:00 pm today - hopefully all the seats will be sold by the time I stop by MAMA'S around 6:00 pm for happy hour. I know that Dottie will be there in spirit and would love to see all of you there.

Next, please join me next week, on Monday, January 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511 - http://www.Triadnyc.com/ ) for the first MAC event of 2007 - an "Post Holiday Party" for MAC members and guests. Let's make this a special night of networking and even reconciliation. This may be our last chance to turn this 20-year-old organization around. Show your support for those of us who want MAC to not simply survive but to once again become a true promoter of live entertainment in NYC. Please try to be there on time at 6:00 pm so that good use can be made of the full 2-hours. Take along your fliers and postcards if you have a show coming up soon. Take along your biggest and best smiles and start handing out those hugs. The time for acrimony and divisiveness is past. It is time to move on. There is new leadership and a new attitude at MAC - I can personally attest to this. An honest effort is being made to correct past mistakes (and especially to admit past mistakes).

Special note to performers who did cabaret, jazz and/or comedy shows in 2006: Please consider nominating yourself in the MAC AWARDS. Last week, as a member of the eligibility committee (see above) I received the list of those who had thus far placed their names/shows in nomination and I was appalled at the low number. Remember, if you performed in a MAC MEMBER CLUB you need not be a member of MAC to be nominated. All the rules, and a nomination form that you can print out, can be found at the MAC website - or click on the links in the FEATURE STORY near the top of this newsletter. It only will take a few minutes to fill out the application, plus a postage stamp. If deemed eligible, your nomination will be listed on the preliminary ballot, to be seen not just by MAC members, but also posted on may websites that cover the awards process (including CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE). The deadline for submissions has been extended for your benefit. Please sign up as soon as possible.

I also invite you to join me on Monday night, January 29th at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/ ) at 7:00 pm for the 2006 NYC NIGHTLIFE AWARDS, produced by Scott Siegel. The winners have been announced (this awards show is like no other, in that the winners are asked to perform rather than make a speech) and several additional performers have already accepted invitations to take part in the show, including Judy Gold, Tom Wopat, Todd Barkan, Charles Busch, Jim Caruso and Rupert Holmes. Good seats in all price ranges are still available. I was one of the judges in the cabaret section, and will be there looking for all my cabaret (and other) friends.

Next, I need for you to mark your calendars for July 6, 2007 - it is a Friday night and it may be difficult for me to find a venue that can have me on a Friday night, but it is my birthday and the 17th Anniversary of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I will be awarding one or more JEFF MATSON Awards on that night (if you have a suggestion of a person to be considered, please send it in), and I will also be establishing a new second award to be announced. More details on this in the weeks to come - including the theme of the party & show. We will follow the schedule we had last year - a party with open-mic from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, followed by a show from 8:00 to 9:30 pm - and then followed by "cake" and networking.

This has been a long issue today - one that has taken a lot of work, writing and re-writing. I would really appreciate your thoughts and comments. It is a very strange thing, but not actually unexpected, that readers do not hesitate to write in if I overlook their news item, and never seem to take note when I do include their news. Please understand that I try not to include an item too far in advance of performance date unless it is a major item like the NIGHTLIFE AWARDS or the like. Once an item is run in the newsletter, it us not repeated unless the performance is advertised on the website (item is repeated every MONDAY issue for the run if the ad) and/or is offering a discount to members (item is repeated every MIDWEEK issue until show date). Also certain cabaret shows and events that are weekly in nature and feature new guests each week are also run every issue.

THIS & THAT
I've added this new section to mention news items that come my way but unconnected to any specific cabaret event, or at lease of a more general cabaret nature. For example:

As long as I am "tilting windmills" I might as well pass along this item - something I have been pondering for some time, after reading an article passed along to me by a songwriter/musician friend.

You may have noted that I have mostly refrained from posting news items and listings about cabaret events taking place outside of established cabaret venues (libraries, churches, etc.). My concern has been for songwriters - those folks who provide the fuel that keeps live entertainment (and any musical entertainment) events supplied with material. Where I was unable to confirm that a particular venue or event had a proper "performance license" I decided to leave them off my lists.

But there is another side to this all. Nearly every songwriter I have spoken to is indeed concerned about their rights being protected, but they are also concerned that their works be performed. Sometimes these two concerns work at cross-purposes. Check out this link to see what I mean:

http://www.desertexposure.com/200501/200501_songwriters.html

Songwriters and musicians who wish to expand the number of folks listening to their songs might want to check out this link:

FRIENDSHIP CELEBRATION CONCERT IN CHICAGO
Medical Insurance is expensive, and much more expensive for performers who work free lance. Usually any medical coverage they can afford only covers a portion of their expenses, leaving a large amount to be paid "out of pocket." Chicago performer Mark Burnell's recent hospital stay incurred extensive costs and his fellow performers are holding a special benefit on Sunday, January 28th at ANDY'S JAZZ (11 East Hubbard Street, Chicago IL - 312-642-6805 - http://www.andysjazzclub.com/ ) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on his behalf. The result is 2 hours of nonstop entertainment featuring over twenty of Chicago's top jazz and cabaret artists. Performers who will appear (subject to change) are Anne & Mark Burnell, The John Burnett Orchestra, Nan Mason, MaryMonica Thomas, Gail Becker, Heather Moran, Jimmy Odom, Daryl Nitz and George Howe, with Bob Ojeda (trumpet), Pete Szjewski (drums), Glenn DeMichele (bass), Dave Berger (guitar), Dean Rolando (piano) Terry Higgins (saxophone) plus other surprise guests, including the Inspirational Choir of Gorham United Methodist Church. The event is co-produced by Daryl Nitz, Productions USA, and Andy's Jazz Club. Doors open at 1:30 pm. There is a $20-25 suggested donation.

SUPER SIDEBAR ADS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE
The current REGULAR SIDE-BAR ads are seen only on the opening (home) page. Several folks have asked if there was a way that their side-bar ad could be seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over 5000 pages on the site it would be impossible, but I have been revising and recoding all the "index" and all the "most visited pages" as well as all new pages of news, reviews and other items to make it possible for a side-bar ad (in the right column on the pages "above the fold" except for the opening page) to be seen on hundreds of pages - all the time. These SUPER SIDE-BAR ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular side-bar ads are available for $125 per week (membership discounts allowed). There is a 2-week minimum. After 2 weeks continuous, the cost drops to $100 per week. If the banner runs for 9 weeks, the 10th week is free. Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. Banner size is 180 x 360 pxls at 72 dpi. Gif, and Jpg banners accepted (no "flash" banners at this time). Banners will appear in the right sidebar at the top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany" position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering mentioned in both the MONDAY and MIDWEEK issues of CABARET HOTLINE and the both ads will be featured in rotation on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE weblog pages as well. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details on all sizes, styles and specs.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, ON THE BLOG AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

Please drop me a line regarding your thoughts about the revised format for the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. By eliminating the listings section (just including links to the listings on the website) I am able to include more news items and still send out a shorted issue. But you might prefer the former style. I won't know unless you let me know. Please remember that complete listings for all areas can be found on the website - as complete as I can make them. If you find an item I have overlooked (or find a listing for a venue that is no longer operating), please drop me a line. There are over 350 venues I am trying to keep you posted on (I added 4 new venues this week).

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
