TODAY'S TOP STORY

LOOKING FOR MORE "FAVORITES" TO JOIN CAST OF BIRTHDAY SHOW

We're looking for some more performers to join the cast of "A Few of My Favorites", the 19th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to be held on Thursday, July 9th at 7:00 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - ). Already announced cast members include cabaret legend Tom Andersen, recent cabaret newcomer Terrell Baker, cabaret/Broadway favorite Raissa Katona Bennett, the delightful Moira Danis, the all-girl vocal group The Delivery Girls, singer/dancer Ryan Greer and the inimitable singer/actor Jim Speake. Musical director for the show is the 2009-double-MAC-Award winning Tracy Stark. We sent out more invites over the weekend and hope to have some announcements soon.

Each year CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE presents the DOTTIE BURMAN and JEFF MATSON awards, and this year we welcome back as our honored guests, past winners: DC Anderson, Hector Coris, Trudi Mann, Collette Black, Joe Regan and Miles Phillips - winners of the JEFF MATSON AWARD, which has been presented since our first birthday party in 2004 and Maria Gentile and Tracy, winners of the DOTTIE BURMAN AWARD, which we started presenting in 2007.

Tickets are $15 for new/renewed 2009-2010 members and $25 for non-members (plus the usual $15 food/drink minimum required by the venue). TICKETS ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH THE WEBSITE - no reservations will be taken by the club, no tickets will be available the night of the show.

Go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt2.shtml to buy your ticket (2009-2010 members can purchase 2 tickets at the member price). If you can't make it to the show, you can buy an ad in the program book (as little as $25) at http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1program.shtml or purchase a ticket that we can give to someone who can't afford one (each birthday we give away 4 or 5 tickets purchased this way.) $100 sponsorships (includes a free ticket and a 1/2 page program ad, plus acknowledgement in promotions - see next paragraph) are available at http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1sponsor.shtml

Proceeds from the party go to support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE through the summer months, when banner and other advertising income traditionally drops by 50-70%.

The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 19th Birthday Party
event is sponsored in part by
Raisa Katona Bennett, Suzanne Carrico, Chelsea's Desktop, Inc. - Chelsea Hudgins, Grace Cosgrove , Creative Minds Productions, Teresa Fischer, Marty Geiger, Eric Michael Gillett, Laura Hull, Miranda Music and Jim Van Slyke.

HERE & THERE - PART I

What a great and glorious weekend I had - sunshine, warm days (but not too warm) and cool nights! Long walks through my Loisaida neighborhood both Saturday and Sunday were refreshing and inspiring. I even got to see two fantastic, entertaining, exciting shows since the last issue: Mark Nadler's Ira Gershwin salute on Thursday night and Daryl Glenn's NASHVILLE show last night - both at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM.

Being at the Nadler show was sort of the result of a "senior moment." Somehow I thought Gretchen Reinhagen's new show was at 7:30 pm and was a little stunned when I was handed the song list for Mark Nadler's show instead. But a happy mistake it was! Skillfully researched and created, and artfully and entertainingly performed, this show has to go down not just a classic cabaret, but as cabaret at its finest. I have to admit, I haven't seen Mark perform since the FIREBIRD shows - couldn't afford his shows at THE ALGONQUIN - unless you count the brief stint he did accompanying Dame Edna on Broadway (the publicist - one of the very few publicists who actually has been a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE member as well) - managed to get me seats to two performances so I could take a different friend to each). But I have been a fan of this "piano wizard" since he was a mere lad at the piano at the original 5 Oaks - where CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE had its conception 19 years ago. Mark is back every Thursday at 7:30 in June at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - check this one out!

And what can is say about NASHVILLE? Just one word: Incredible! Country music - or is it Blue Grass music? - at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - who knew? This show won cabaret's 2009 triple crown: The Nightlife Award in January, The Bistro Award in April and the MAC Award in May. And deservedly! And now they kicked it up another notch, adding a guest performer each week - last night it was the fiery Lorinda Lisitza! (Next month Lisa Asher!). The songs - all from the acclaimed film of the same name - just kept on coming, with hardly a moment for us to catch our breath. The excitement and fun was so overpowering, when the show ended everyone in the room wanted more (including me). I already have my reservation in for Sunday, July 5th (the day before my official birthday)!

At the Nadler show I was seated in the unofficial "Senior Section" at the METROPOLITAN ROOM - along with two of my favorite senior lady performers: Gerta Grunen and Carol Shedlin - I won't even guess what our combined ages totaled. CABARET SCENES editor Frank Dain asked to sit with us, but we made him display his AARP card before we would allow it (and he had one!). Peter Haas tried to move into our section but we told him he was too old and sent him packing to the unofficial "super-senior" section in the center of the room. The place was packed with celebrities, many of them who were co-performers with Mark in earlier shows, including KT Sullivan and Heather Mac Rae. We also saw Sue Matsuki, Joan Crowe and Stephanie Zagoren in the jam-packed audience.

I hope you will go to the website today at http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml and join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as a 2009-2010 member - and then go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt2.shtml to buy your ticket to our 19th Birthday Show at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on Thursday, June 9th at 7:00 pm (members can purchase 2 tickets at the member price). That way you can get the MEMBER price of $15 rather than $25. Or if you can't make it, buy an ad in the program book (as little as $25) at http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1program.shtml or purchase a ticket that we can give to someone who can't afford one (each birthday we give away 4 or 5 tickets purchased this way.) $100 sponsorships (includes a free ticket and a 1/4 page program ad plus acknowledgement in promotions) available at http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1sponsor.shtml   Reservations are limited to 75 - with 45 seats already reserved. Tickets are only available on line - and no seats will be sold at the door the night of the show.

CABARET FOLKS ON TWITTER YOU SHOULD FOLLOW DEPARTMENT: Every Monday we spotlight another cabaret personality who you should follow on TWITTER (besides me at http://twitter.com/stuhamstra ). These are performers and friends of cabaret that I am currently following, who provide pithy comments and news on a regular basis, and who will not inundate you with TWITS of a political, commercial or pornographic nature and endless promos for their website, blog or next cabaret show. Choice this week is Lee Lessack (http://twitter.com/leetunes ). Last week we "twittered" with Lee as he travelled from California to HARLAN'S in New Hope, then THE CASTLE in Tarrytown, and today he heads for THE METROPOLITAN ROOM for his nearly-sold-out show tonight, all part of his tribute tour to the songs of Johnny Mercer. Click on his link to sign on as a follower.

Members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are eligible for SPECIAL discounts and deals on all banners and ads during June & July - check out the item in the MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter of Friday May 29th and repeated in this Friday's special newsletter.

This will be an extra busy month for me - not only are some great shows coming up, but tomorrow the folks who invited me to St. Louis last year are coming to town for a few days, and at the end of the month my sister comes to the area for her high school class reunion (in New Jersey). I want to take them all out "cabareting" and await their visits to see what free nights they have open.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITES

BANNER COSTS CUT THROUGH JULY 4th, 2009

Recession busting price break: Through July 4th we are discontinuing the $10 per week "surcharge" on the cost of the first two weeks of banner ads - meaning that REGULAR BANNER ADS will run just $30 per week and SUPERSIZE just $50 per week. 2-week minimum still applies on all advertising. Write me for details - a few other changes apply. SIDEBAR ads continue at the same $25/week cost.

Members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are eligible for SPECIAL discounts and deals on all banners and ads during June & July - check out the item in the MEMBERS' ONLY newsletter of Friday May 29th and repeated in tomorrows newsletter.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

We welcomed our 8th, 9th & 10th Birthday show sponsors over the weekend. We are trying to raise at least $3000 through membership and ticket sales to tide us over the summer months when our main income source - website ads - traditionally "dry up." and these sponsorships will do a lot to help. At the same time, they help us keep our ticket price for the Birthday Show affordable - especially this year. There is no way we can raise $3000 from selling 75 tickets at $15 each (or even the non-member price of $25 each), so we are truly grateful to those who signed on as sponsors this year (and got a free ticket at the same time). Check the website for details on sponsorship.

As mentioned in Thursday's issue, our birthday show this year is part one of a 2-part series "A Few of My Favorites" - performers who have excited, thrilled, inspired and entertained me over the past 19 years that we have published CABARET HOTLINE (the ONLINE part started in 1997). Part 2 will be next July when we celebrate Our 21st Year! We're still in the selection process - I hope to announce another addition or two to the cast in Thursday's issue. A few performers were actually suggested by my pal Daniel. For example, as we were leaving BIRDLAND last month after Wayman Wong's LEADING MEN show - with about 20 stars from Broadway & cabaret on the bill - Daniel turned to me and said "with all those great voices, only Tom Andersen was the one to 'nailed it' in delivering his song. You have to ask him to sing at your show." And the die was cast.

This is our 5th Birthday show and over the past 4 years we have included 49 different performers - and only three have had a "double" appearance - Sue Matsuki because she helps each year organizing the show, Lennie Watts because he happened to be the booking manager of the room two years, and the third, Hector Coris, because the first time he appeared as an JEFF MATSON AWARD winner, the second time as a regular guest. Tom Andersen will be the fourth performer making his second "birthday show" appearance this year - a record of sorts. You are in for a real treat! We've enjoyed Tom's performances nearly as long as we have been publishing the newsletter!

I'll be introducing you to a few more performers in the next issue on Thursday.

Another reminder: 2009-2010 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERSHIPS are now on sale - all current memberships expire on the 5th of July each year, so new members can get an extra month of benefits by joining now. And current members can avoid a lot of pesky e-mails from me begging them to rejoin by signing up today and getting it all out of the way now. You can join today - just click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website. ($250 Crystal members and above get 2 free tickets to the birthday show - subject to availability.) Some new member benefits were added this year - with a few more to come, including our first 2009 MEMBERS' CHOICE contest coming in July.

We should be getting our first report on the ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL from Frank Ford any day now - he is one of the founders of the event and replaces our "reporter" of many years - Bill Stephens. Meantime, our pal via TWITTER, Matthew Carey is adding items daily to his blog http://cabaretconfessional.squarespace.com/ which you can find a link for on both the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE home (opening) page or on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG.

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Join as a member! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Buy a ticket to the 19th Birthday show! Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support.

I have a lot more to tell you about. Look for more news on the website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ), on the blog (http://svhamstra.com.blogspot.com/ ) and in Thursday's newsletter. Watch for "comments on the passing scene" by following me on TWITTER (http://twitter.com/stuhamstra ). Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret! Members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be receiving their MEMBERS ONLY issue tomorrow.

And that's just about the way it was - and once more in less than 8600 words! Until Thursday then,

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
