A Rare Find ã Forgotten Gems From the American Popular Songbook
Justin Hayford
Several weeks
ago I received Justin Hayford's debut CD ã "A Rare FindãForgotten
Gems From the American Popular Songbook." Mr. Hayford has carved out
a niche for himself in the Chicago cabaret world by presenting first
class shows of songs by Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Frank Loesser,
and assorted others from the American Popular Songbook, that, for
one reason or another, have been forgotten. On his debut recording
he offers up twelve selections that are pure gems that were "the bombs,
flops and misfires of their day."
Mr. Hayford
has the whole package ã great material, a great voice ... and he's
a great piano player to boot! This is one fine CD that has rarely
left my collection of frequently played discs! Highlights include
"You're Awful" (Comden/Green/Edens), "Just the Way I Am" (Troup),
"I Go for That" (Loesser/Malneck), and the lovely "The House is Haunted
(By the Echo of Your Last Goodbye)" (Rose/Adlam). As an added bonus,
Mr. Hayford's fine liner notes offers the listener a brief background
of each song.
This is an
A+ CD with great musicianship from Mr. Hayford and high production
values. Fans of the underdog, as Mr. Hayford claims to be, will be
happy to add this new release to their collection.
