CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE CD REVIEW

DC Anderson CD Cover

"all is calm, all is bright"
D.C. Anderson

I just received a copy of D.C. Anderson's new Christmas CD, "all is calm, all is bright" (LML Music 136), and I must say that this is one fine holiday recording. Full of songs that celebrate the season by a wide variety of composers, this is certainly a charming CD by one of cabaret's most talented performers.

The recording is noteworthy since it includes the first recorded version of Mary Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim's "Christmas Island at Christmas Time" and the debut recording D.C. Anderson and Steven Landau's "Hands." Both of these, performed admirably by Mr. Anderson, are worth celebrating this CD, but it also includes fine gems like "The Rest of the Year" (Buskin), "Heaven Can't be Far" (Birkenhead/Simon), and a few comic pieces like "Dickens Carolers" (lyric and arr. by Gray) and Mr. Anderson's own "Department Stores Mean Christmas to Me" (Landau/Anderson). The more recent material aside, Mr. Anderson also has recorded fine renditions of more traditional fare like "Silent Night" (Gruber/Mohn) and "Infant Holy" (trad. Polish).

With all of the Christmas cabaret shows I see, I am generally a little tired of holiday music by this late in December, but Mr. Anderson's recording was a welcome find in my mailbox the other morning, and it has become a welcome addition to my CD collection.

"all is calm, all is bright" is available in fine CD stores, or it can be ordered directly at http://www.LMLMusic.com/.
